Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 22:12:55 -0500
I recently installed Linux Mandrake 7.0. I have a DVD drive, which Linux
detects fine and I can use with no problem. However, I have an Acer 4432
CDRW drive, and during the install, it appeared to detect it fine, it
created a link for it on the desktop. However, For some reason, I whenever
I try to put any CD in there, (including the Mandrake CD and any CD that has
been successfully read by my other drive), Linux tells me that the it cannot
read from the drive. Any suggesstions....

Subject: RedHat upgrade, SANE sense_handler error and dumps core
Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 22:10:52 -0500
Hello All!
Was running RedHat 4.2 for a few years, with HP 5P scanner. Everything
worked fine with older sane and kernel 2.0.36.
Upgraded to RH 6.1, not having good luck. Now have kernel 2.2.12-20. Sane
1.0.2 compiled from source just fine.
'Everyone' knows the scanner is there. Added another SCSI hd during the
upgrade, was using /dev/sgb, now find-scanner confirms that /dev/sgc is
correct.
When I run scanimage or xscanimage it seems to just sit there for about
two minutes, then prints '[s9036] sense_handler() : sense code = 70', then
a minute or two later segfaults and dumps core.
Details, PPro/200, Symbios 8751SP.
Any clues?
TIA. Have a :) day!

I am contemplating buying a Creative Sound Blaster PCI 128 sound card and I
was wondering if it is supported by linux or if someone has gotten it to
work with linux by special drivers.
Thanks,

I don't think it is a GDI printer, since the manual addresses using the
printer with DOS and Macintosh. The manual covers the following models:
895C
880C
830C
810C
based on this, I tried the 890C driver, but I can't get it to work. Any
other guesses will be appreciated.

The touchpad works just like any other PS/2 mouse. The only problem I had
with my Sony F450 (other than the winmodem) was that the Yamaha DS-GX
sound is not supported in current distros, other than an 8-bit sb
compatible mode for use in DOS. So I had to buy the commercial OSS sound
driver, which works great for everything including CD music.

Check if your CDRW is in the secondary IDE, and the DVD in the primary
together with your HD... That should be your problem...
I got the same devices, and I use Mandrake 7... and I have no problem...
By the way, my video card is givin' me some problem... Intel i810 onboard...
Witch one do you use?
Same thing with my SB128PCI... I can't make it work... do you have problems
with your sound card? Witch one do you got ?
I hope that helps
thanks...

Just a folllow up!
I ordered and recieved an Adaptec SlimSCSI 1460. It worked perfectly
on first insert with my Panasonic KXL-RX10A portable CD-R/RW.
Reading, writing and rewriting all worked perfectly.
If you order this Panasonic drive, throw away the supplied card!

Subject: bttv/video4linux problems
Date: Tue, 14 Mar 2000 23:11:02 -0500
I have been having problems getting my bttv-based card (Hauppauge WinTV
401) to work properly under Linux. So far, I have not had any problems
getting audio working, but video has been a problem (every application
simply displays a black screen.)
So far, I have tried xawtv versions 3.10 and 2.46, kwintv, and fbtv (which
came with xawtv. The only one I have not had working at all is xawtv
3.10, which simply hangs after launching. For all the others, audio and
channel switching work fine. kwintv's "scan" feature also works properly,
picking up all of the channels I have (ntsc-cable.)
I am using 2.2.14 with bttv-0.6.4 (downloaded and compiled separately,
however the results were the same with the kernel-included drivers.) As
X servers go, I am using XFree 4.0. However, I have also tried getting
this working under XFree 3.3.x, with the same luck. (I keep XFree 3.x
XFree 4.x in separate directories, so I may switch between the two if the
need arises.)
A few additional notes:
* DGA does not, nor ever has worked, under either XFree 3 or 4. As such,
I compiled the bttv module with the -DNODGA option added.
* XFree 4 includes a video4linux module named "v4l". I am able to load it
properly, however when any application tries to use XVideo (while this
module is loaded), the entire X server will crash.
* xawtv 3.10 came with an application called "xvideo" (which wasn't
installed via "make install", but was available in the "src" directory.)
When running it, it reports one xvideo device, my Matrox G200 card (a
Matrox Millenium G200/4MB/AGP). It reports it under the name
"Matrox G-Series Backend Scaler".
* After using any v4l application, the bttv driver will make notes
regarding the Matrox card. These messages were pulled using dmesg and
are listed at the bottom of this message.
Commands used to load the bttv/v4l drivers:

I compiled sb16 support. Actually, the kernel that comes with my distribution
has sb16 support, and the settings are what mine were, but when I did "modprobe
sound" Linux would crash. Now my sound card is at A220 I10 D3 H7, that is it
uses DMA 3. Now, I have a quantum Hard disk on an IDE controller, does it use
DMA? It doesn't say under windows

I have the same card. It's kind of depressing that you can get 1024x768 in
command mode, but can't do any better than 640 with X. I went to their web
site where they said they had subcontracted a company to do the driver. I
don't think there's any alphas or betas available either. I'm just going to
tough it out in command mode until that day comes and I can run KDE. The
other alternative I heard about is installing a second video card to do the
XWindows.

It works just fine on my PowerBook G3 under Virtual PC ... both SuSE and
Redhat. It works even faster after I rebuild the kernel using the code
native of the virtual PC emulator.
