Hey ho.

I've decided to install Slackware 7.0 on an old 386 laptop. I don't
know much about the machine, but it seems to run DOS 6.2 okay. That's
not saying much, of course.

When I boot up the machine using boot and root floppies from the
distribution, all seems to go well until it sets up the proc system.
Then I see the following:

INIT: version 2.76 booting
none on /proc type proc (rw)
Bus error
INIT: Entering runlevel: 4

Thereafter, when I try to log in as root, one of the following occurs:
(a) I get this error:
(Oops! I couldn't reproduce the error just now -- something about
Id coming in too fast -- or ld?)

(b) The message of the day (or whatever that first screen of
instructions is) rolls up the screen again and I see another login
prompt.

Is this a hardware error? What should I do?

(Forgive the crosspost, but it's not clear which group to write to.
Also, let me know what details I should give that I haven't.)

As an aside, the boot and root floppies work on another machine I
have.

Hi,

the subject says it all, is the 880c working with Ghostscript? Anybody tried
that?
What about USB-Support in newer Kernels?

Although Promise UDMA 66 is working and I can also boot from a disk
on it, I cant enable DMA transfer from it. Is that the current state
of support? Is there someone who has enabled DMA transfer on a drive
connected on such a card?
My configuration:
Kernel 2.2.14, Redhat 6.1
Disk: WD Caviar WDC AC313000R, 12416MB w/512kB Cache, CHS=25228/16/63
The symptoms:
#/sbin/hdparm -c1 -d1 -k1 -m16 -W1 /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
setting 32-bit I/O support flag to 1
setting multcount to 16
setting using_dma to 1 (on)
HDIO_SET_DMA failed: Operation not permitted
setting keep_settings to 1 (on)
setting drive write-caching to 1 (on)
multcount = 16 (on)
I/O support = 1 (32-bit)
using_dma = 0 (off)
keepsettings = 1 (on)
# /sbin/hdparm -Tt /dev/hda
/dev/hda:
Timing buffer-cache reads: 128 MB in 1.39 seconds =92.09 MB/sec
Timing buffered disk reads: 64 MB in 8.94 seconds = 7.16 MB/sec
That speed is 13MB/s when the disk is on the on board interface with
DMA enabled.

Thanks again for your reply. I was just too frustrated with WinModems I
couldn't even run in my NT's. I though heard some Linux folks able to use
WinModem with from Linux boxes but not easy to configure than regular modem.

Thanks, but I had read the README.SiS file, and I had already tried most of
that stuff.
The implementation of the card I have (generic / no brand name that I can
determine, tho it is AGP) is weird, and so none of the settings that were in
the file worked to give me more than 8 bpp. And I found a little nasty
when - out of hellish frustration - I called X with 16 bpp and the process
ate my file system. Not sure what happened, or even if that was the real
cause, but I had to completely re-install RH 6.0 after that little bit of
derring-do. e2fsck couldn't get enough back, and since it was essentially a
brand-new install, I just re-did everything. But am not inclined to try to
get a solid repro on that one.

It works... more or less. There is a driver which can be
compiled into Ghostscript which will allow printing. You can find it at:

        http://www.proaxis.com/~mgelhaus/linux/software/hp880c/hp880c.html

The 1.31 version of the driver works well for text, and passably for
pictures, though it's nowhere near the quality of the Windows driver.
The 1.4beta version will supposedly be much better for pictures, but
doesn't support the black cartridge yet, and the gamma is way off.
I haven't tried it.

Best of luck,

Brian

Greets, all.

I'm looking for a good, inexpensive, and Linux compatible high speed

460.8Kbps, so I need a serial port that will go at least that quickly.

How much RAM. Had nice running around with box of 4M untill upgraded to

Don't recall now but look for lowmem image of booting diskette, it may

Hello, I have a zoltrix TV Max tuner card. I seem to have a very strange
problem with it.

The video works great!!!, the audio however is another story.

I am using RH6 , bttv.o, tuner.o and kwintv(also tried xawtv)

when I start kwintv, I can hear the tv audio of whatever channel the tuner
was last on. but as soon as the video displays(about 1-2 seconds later) the
audio goes away !

Anyone have any ideas?

I have neeb using linux for about a good many years, but this one has me
puzzled.

Well, I thought the drivers and source code were available directly
from Nvidia. XFree86 3.3.5 non DRI GLX, and DRI GLX for XFree86
4.0 on the way. Thats what the drivers page says at their site ???
