Hi Sreekant.
I had some troubles installing it but just because I wasnt doing it
correctly :-)
First I downloaded the 2.4 kernel and installed the agp module there but
that module doesnt work with XFCom and you HAVE to use the one that
intel provides. When I tried to compile that one I just got errors and
that was only because it couldnt find the
/usr/src/linux/include/version.h wich is created as soon as you compile
a kernel (so I just got the source of my kernel and compiled it but
didnt install it since I had a good kernel allready and then I could
compile the agpgart module). Then you set it into
/lib/modules/your_kernel_version/misc and tell /etc/modules to load that
module.
Then you tell /etc/X11/Xserver to use the XFCom_i810 server and you
should have a X up and running then.
You can use the XF86Setup program to generate a working XF86Config file
but you have to edit it to make it work properly, there is info on how
to do this at intel.com, unfortunately I dont remember where.

Look closer. There's a line in the boot sequence that reads:
"Aug 26 22:56:16 somehost kernel: parport0: detected irq 7; use procfs
to enable interrupt-driven operation."
Is this it ?

Hmmm, my BIOS is setup for the parallel port to support ECP and EPP.
Is this a problem - having the two modes supported at the same time ?

I have already tried this, to no avail. Besides, under RH 6.0 and 6.1,
the same zip drive with the same disks mounted correctly to /dev/sda4.

Hi, I'm not sure what your problem is but any distro using XFree86 3.3.x
and above has generic support for Geforce256 & ddr but you must install the
svga server during your initial installation. I've used a Prophet 256 with
Slackware 7.0 & 7.1, Mandrake 7.0 $ 7.1 and FreeBSD 4.1 all with no problems
what-so-ever. If you want to use Nvidia's latest 3d drivers then you will
need to install XFree86 4.0.

Which version of XFree86 are you using? I believe they require XFree86 4.0.

Subject: Possible to have IDE and UMA drives on the same controller?
Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 11:17:32 +0100
I want to move some IDE drives from my old (dead) Linux workstation to its
replacement. The old macchine was VL-bus based! The new one will have a
modern motherboard with an integral UMA66/100 controller though for
performance reasons I might add a separate controller card. Obviously I
can't put the VL-bus controller card in there. Casting around the net
(HOWTOs,etc) it appears that I can use the existing drives with a UMA
controller but I can't find out solid answers to my questions.
The most pressing question is can I mix-and-match the old IDE drives with
newer UMA drives on the same controller? Probably more pressing still is
whether I would need to reformat the existing drives before using them with
the new controller (integral or separate)? The existing disks probably will
be used for "archive" rather than continuous access so the speed
differential isn't important.

A Deja search turned up a post with the URL for a site set up
by the maintainer of the aic7xxx driver. I downloaded and
applied the patches necessary to take my version of the driver
to his most recent version and that fixed the problem for me.

I am getting Signal 11 and installation aborting when I try to

Most computer shops can test memory for a small charge.

Hi,
Do you have VIA AC97 in sound config? If yes that's OK. I needed a kernel
patch.
Then I had to enable SB Pro legacy in Bios. Next read via82cxxx.txt. This
file was missing in my patch. It says that you need also SB modules for
support reason only.
My main problem was solved by placing in conf.modules lines
alias sound via82cxxx
options sb support=1.
If you have run depmod -a the sb.o module will be loaded as well (and
uart401.o).

I found the solution to why my ide cd recorder was not
recognized by cdrecord and xcdroast.
The followind line had to be added to lilo.conf :
append="hdbc=ide-scsi"
I think the reason is to tell the kernel to recognize that the
ide scsi emulation linkages would use the /dev/hdbc device
where the cd recorder drive was located.
I also had to load the ide-scsi.o module, which appears to
make the ide drive emulate a scsi device.
The lynch pin was the adding of the line to lilo.conf.

Subject: My monitors are getting fried. Is Xfree86 to blame?
Date: Thu, 31 Aug 2000 19:40:01 GMT
About two months ago my 19" generic brand monitor lost most of its color and
brightness and turned a dark brown on the screen. If I turned it off for an
extended period of time, it would come back somewhat but it was clearly
ruined. I am not sure what caused it. It had worked fine for over a year.
I replaced the monitor with a Hitachi CM771, which worked just great for a
month. Now it is showing the same symptoms. I am at a loss at to what new
factor is causing these monitors to lose their brightness. I have replaced
the video card I had (Riva TNT AGP) with a Voodoo 5 5500 AGP. No
difference. I am now considering checking the motherboard for some kind of
faulty AGP port, and the resolution settings to see if I perhaps set the res
too high (1280x1024) but it is doubtful since the Hitachi was well within
its limits of resolution and refresh rate.
I am trying to think about the changes I've made to the system in the last
two months. I upgraded the CPU from a 400Mhz PII to a 550Mhz PIII, changed
the resolution from 1024x768 to 1280x1024.
Under X, the NVidia TNT has worked just fine using 3.3.6 SVGA server for
more than a year. Is it possible that the server somehow miscalculated the
refresh rates? I was fairly conservative in the limits I set for the X
server as far as the monitor's capacity, so I did not think that X could
have damaged it, although I have heard of monitors getting damaged if the
server's clock timings weren't set right. In five years of using X, I have
never had it cause any problems, but I have to consider this as a
possibility. Typically I use Win98 for most of my work stuff, and use
Linux for most of my code hacking. Has anyone actually had XFree86 ruin
their monitor? I had thought that such a problem was relegated to the
monitors of the past.
The other thing I changed was that I started playing a lot of DVDs
on my system with my Creative Labs DVD player. Now, with the DVD player, I
refused to use the passthrough adaptor since it affected the clarity of my
picture, so instead I opted to play it out to my TV through the DXR II SVHS
port while leaving the DVD player software in the background of my PC
desktop. Without the passthrough to play the DVD through to my screen as
well as the TV, the DVD picture where my screen is supposed display is a
bright blue overlay. I am now wondering if this is yet another factor that
could affect my monitors.
I am losing my mind over this. I have somehow managed to fry $900 worth of
hardware in a 60 day period.
Please help if you can.
Thanks

After you made bzImage, did you copy the new kernel to /boot, update
/etc/lilo.conf, and rerun /sbin/lilo to make the changes take effect?
New kernels don't do any good unless the system can boot from them.
