Both you and Stanislaw suggested memory, so I checked that out. I
have 8meg. Coincidentally, last night I tried to boot up a 4meg
machine with the same disks. Different reaction -- it simply never
loaded the Root Disk.

I happen to have a copy of 4.0 -- loaned out at the moment, but I'll
get it back and try your suggestion. Hopefully, without X, the
machine will work tolerably.

Too bad I downloaded 7.0 largely to install it on the old laptop, huh?
Well, I upgraded my main computer too, at least.

I have a similar situation with the CS4610 on my Aptiva motherboard...
I've tried using the ALSA CS461x driver (snd-card-cs461x) in RH 6.1, but
modprobe keeps returning 'device or resource busy' errors when I try to
load it.

I'd like to throw a new sound card in my system, but the speakers on the
monitor have a propietary plug :-< so for the meantime I have a system
with no sound in Linux.

Has _anybody_ managed to get a Crystal chipset working?

In the BIOS setup, make sure the "translation mode" for that hard drive is
set to "LBA". If your BIOS is older than January 1998, you may need to
get a BIOS flash upgrade. You'll also want to have the drive set to "Auto
Config" in the BIOS if at all possible.

Make sure there's no "Drive Limiting Capacity" jumper set on the drive.
Also make sure there aren't any silly "Drive Manager" programs installed
on that drive... those programs are for brain-damaged things masquerading
as OSes.

After doing this, you'll probably have to repartition the drive. HTH,

Hi. I have a Gateway Pentium III with Promise Ultra66 controller and
nvidia tnt2 video card. I got a boot image from www.promise.com
and doing ide2=xxxx,xxxx ide3=xxxx,xxxx and then making a device
with mknod it can see the partitions on the hd, but I'm wondering
if anyone with a similar machine can tell me if you are running
a Linux dist. that installed without too many headaches and does
XWindows okay with the TNT2 NVidia card?

The boot disk I have is supposed to work with Red Hat 6.0 but
they said something about Red Hat not liking "third party modules"
and since I may mess with modules later I'm wondering if another
dist. may be a better choice?

Anyone using TurboLinux 6.0? I have access to that for free
so if you have it running on a Gateway similar to mine please
let me know.

TIA

btw-thanks also to those who emailed me helping to get the
Promise card recognized.

Hi. I haven't installed Linux on my new machine yet 'cause I've been
messing around working around the Promise66 udma issue, but I now
have a boot disk that can recognize the drive. I have a Gateway with
NVidia TNT2 32 MB ram. Do you have any experience which Linux
distribution will get XWindows up and running easily with it?

TIA

Which kernel version do you have? The latest stable one is 2.2.14 and
since the kernel package includes the maestro module, the installation
should be automatic. If you have installed the module separately, try the
following lines

alias char-major-14 maestro
alias sound maestro

in /etc/conf.modules file. Also, to tell your system that maestro
modules requires the soundcore module

(which you have to compile as a kernel module - sound support or something
when configuring, no soundcard specific modules)

add the following line to /lib/modules/<kernel.version>/modules.dep :

/lib/modules/<kernel.version>/misc/maestro.o:
/lib/modules/<kernel.version>/misc/soundcore.o

The easier alternative is to get the 2.2.14 kernel and compile it with
sound support and maestro support as modules. All the above settings will
be automated when you make modules_install.

I was able to pick up a used IBM Thinkpad 380D for relatively cheap, and
I'll be taking delivery in about 4 days. I'm excited. However, I checked
on the main Linux-Laptops web page at
   http://www.cs.utexas.edu/users/kharker/linux-laptop/
and wasn't able to find anything about the 380D model. There were two
pages listed--the one at
   http://www.mnsinc.com/js/Neomagic.html
is concerned with display drivers only, and the one at
   http://spacenetindia.com/tech/linuxthinkpad.html
refers specifically to the 380XD model. The prognosis for getting Linux
up and running looks great, provided the 380D and 380XD aren't horribly
different. Does anyone know if this is the case?

I tried to get more detailed info on the 380D from IBM's site, but no
dice. (Guess they don't keep specs for "old hardware"!) Anyway, if
anyone knows of any pitfalls/trouble spots/things I should look out for,
please post to this NG. No need to cc: me unless you feel like it; all
comments encouraged.

The TNT2 didn't become supported until Xfree86 3.3.4, which means you'll
be happier with a more recent distro like RH 6.1, Mandrake 7.0, SuSE 6.3,
Caldera 2.3, or the like. Works very well in 2D with Xfree86 > 3.3.4. RH
and derived distros can't seem to configure it optimally when installing,
though; you'll have to run Xconfigurator/SaX/XF86Setup after install and
get the display looking pretty.

What? Modules are supposed to be packages of code with an... er, modular
interface, so that they're independent of distro and (almost) independent
of the kernel version. I don't know about RH 6.0, but the lm_sensors
kernel modules (pretty 3rd party; put together by clever hackers not
affiliated with RH) worked just great with RH 6.1.

Does anyone make a PCI card with four or more *separate* IDE controllers on
it? I've seen the Promise Fasttrack controller, but it only has two
controllers (each with a Master and Slave). What I'm looking for is four
or more independent controllers (don't care if they got slave on them).

I'm thinking of playing with Software Raid using four or more drives.

I've heard of companies selling entire setups (not sure whether they are
hardware or software) including drives and drive bays, but I'm just looking
for a source of high-density IDE controllers.

Yeah, it sounded kind of strange to me too. On my old
486 machine with Slackware I have most everything but
the ext2 driver compiled and loaded as modules with
kerneld. Maybe Red Hat is feeding Promise that stuff
to avoid having to help them do it or the person who
wrote the stuff on the Promise web site just doesn't

Note that you don't actually have to physically remove the card from it's
socket. Just type:

"cardctl eject 1" or "cardctl suspend 1", then
"cardctl insert 1" or cardctl resume 1"

Just wish I could figure out how to do this automatically.

"man ln" might be more enlightening. :)
