look at the linux hardware compatiblity list for the latest
compatiblity. I have NE2000 cards which are PCI cards that cost $12 a
piece and have both RJ45 and BNC plugs and I just recently got a hub
that supports both connectors also, and has 8 ports for only $25. The
hub doesn't have a driver (none do) so it works in any environment; only
the cards will matter. Mine use the ne2k-pci driver builtinto the
kernel. Work fine. Plan on adding more comps when i get cable modem
access and i will be wiring whole house hopefully.

I think you'll have no problems, since I have your same setup (USR 56K Voice
and Redhat 6.1) and the modem was picked up immediately under ttyS0, without
having to look for any specific driver.

tell us all what program is really doing the burning. x-CD-Roast is only
a gui front-end for console CD Burning software. AFAIK you should never
get errors relating to "dummy mode" when you not doing a simulation
burn. I've got XCDRoast configured to use cdrecord to do the burning and
I've never seen that problem (Adaptec 2904/yamaha drive). Perhaps if we
know what software you're using someone will be able to help.

It seems from the compatibility list that this is not supported as it is not
the PCI version (EISA instead).
Does anyone know if I can install Linux from a SCSI CD onto the SCSI disks
on this system?

buy a pcmcia card reader for your desktop and install pcmcia support
into your kernel ofthe desktop machine.
once linux has better usb support you should be ok though

unless it works for teh zip, which it shouldn't, you may want to try
actually using the correct order of arguments for the mount command. For
example, dont put the fs type at the end, it doesn't go there

On a similar veign, I couldn't get my VIBRA16 to work under RH 6.0.
Installing sb.o with:
modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=3
gives the error mentioned, however I do have a /dev/dsp, but tk3play fails to
produce any sound,
though cat'ing a .au file to /dev/audio works!
/etc/isapnp.gone gives (I have no /etc/isapnp.conf):
# Sound
#IO 0x220,16
#IO 0x330,2
#IO 0x388,4
#IRQ 5
#DMA 1
#DMA 5
which lead me to beleive that on my system the 2nd DMA channel is 5 rather
than 3. Trying:
modprobe sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5
and lo and behold, no errors and tk3play now works. This is now in my
conf.modules file as:
alias sound sb
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 dma16=5
and I now have sound immediately after boot.

R.

Subject: SCSI Drive
Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 10:27:47 GMT
While installing debian on an old sparc IPX, the hardrive would give me
problems Here are typical errors:
ext2-fs error device 08:01 ext2.check.blocks_bitmap: 7936 wrong free
blocks count for group 10 stored 7936 counted 7762
ext2-fs error device 08:02 ext2_write_inode unable to read inode block
inode=465 block=63
Also, when its extracting the drivers disk from the cdrom I got an error
"Broken loopback device, copying to local" then it works fine from
there. What is this loopback device? Something to do with the scsi-bus
or the drive? Surely its not refering to the network loopback?
The ext2 errors begin to appear, just after I've installed the base
system to the drive, basically any writes or reads after that cause
errors, and usually the system locks up before I can reboot, per the
normal install routine. After booting the cdrom, partitioning, and
making the fs, via the dbbootstrap program, if I go to the shell and
manually use fdisk, mkfs, or fsck, I get no errors. Also the normal
install does a (read) bad-block check and reports no problems. But after
the drive actually has some files written to it, then the above errors
start occuring. If I try to fsck filesystems at this point, fsck dumps
core, with
error messages complaining about duplicate inode records. (thats a bit
vauge, but If anyone is interested in the exact message, I could put the
drive back in and try it again).
Is this drive worthless? I replaced it with an old vax drive, and the
install worked ok. Is there somekind of format that would detect the
badblocks and let me use the drive?
Originally I assumed the loopback error was related to the problematic
drive, but I got that error when I installed with the 2nd drive, but
otherwise the install went fine, and the system works ok. Any hints on
what it could be refering to?

Does Corel Linux supports different memory types? I use Fast page and EDO on

not intend to waste the old 2x 4Mb FastPage ram that I have. Does anyone

HCF means winmodem, so does HSP. Lucky you *sarcasm*

its not caldera, its linux settings you are after and com2 in linux is
ttyS1
but that setting for your modem may change when you get a real modem
since that one isnt going to work
> 3:Why do I get no modem, modem is busy messages when trying to find my

b/c linux cant communciate with a modem that needs a driver to run, a
windows driver nonetheless
> 4:When I think I have found my modem, why does it start by saying

it tries to talk to the modem but b/c the modem needs a driver *unlike
a real modem which doesnt* linux cant communicate with it then
> 5:Is there a better type of modem to have if this modem continues to not

unless the drivers at linmodems.org help you wont ever get it working
buy a modem for like $80 that isnt a winmodem and you are set. I would
say sell the modem u have to help pay for the new modem but u will only
get $20 out of it unless someone really stupid buys it. But $20 is $20.

why don't u buy some books?
it may be a winprinter (yes they make those too, for all these people
thinking they are getting a great deal on a computer who don't know
anything). I dont know how to find if its a winprinter though...u may do
some searches on yahoo and see what comes up.

Subject: Looking for the "right" SMP Linux motherboard ... (aggressive hobbyist
Date: Fri, 24 Mar 2000 21:24:20 +1100
Hi,
I am planning to build myself a new SMP Linux machine (my current
machine is based on a 200 MHz Pentium MMX and is feeling its age a
bit...) and am looking for some advice about what to go for in an SMP
motherboard, and what to avoid.
I reckon that I will need something like 1GB of memory (potential),
133MHz bus, USB ports, lots of PCI slots, an AGP slot, 2 EIDE slots,
maybe an ISA slot or two. Basically a motherboard with lots of ports and
slots, and nothing integrated onto it. However, I am hearing rumours of
the rise of RAMBUS memory which will force SDRAM into early obsolesence,
new chipsets etc. I don't want to buy something which could suddenly
lose all of its expansion potential when I can no longer get compatible
parts!
Can anyone give me some pointers, please?
Cheers,
Chris.
