Subject: FTP Server installation problem
Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 09:37:44 GMT

The problem is that when I try to connect to my ftp server on my local
network there is about 1.5 mimutes latency until I can connect, and this
latency will happen in each ftp command from the ftp client program.
This problem is for ftp only and the http server (Apatche) was working
fine for all the sites located on my local network server.

I changed several client programs and the problem persists, however
there was several ftp client did'nt connect at all (like ws_ftp) on
windows 98 but the connection happened using Cute-ftp after 1.5 minutes
waiting.
I tried to diable the IP aliasing (multiple IP's to the same NIC).

I installed mandrake 6 then mandrake 7

I changed the network card (rtl8029, rtl8139b).

I tried to change the server sofware then I replaced the wu-ftpd 2.6 to
Pro-ftpd server.

I tried to run the ftp server sofware as inet or standalone modes

All this tials had failed to solve this problem.

Please is there any help?

This one extra note about the problem that the ftp server is working
fine locally using several ftp client sofware and the problem is
happening from the local area network connections only.
I tried to connect from several machines and several operating systems
and this problem happened in another server allso.

Where is the problem. Can someone help me please ?

Thanks

I have the same problem too, thanks for the help but there is no
"soundcard" file at all so you can't link it to the "sound" file. The
problem also effects some KDE specific apps like KXicq. It happens when
you have OSS drivers running your sblive. Never had this problem in
Caldera or Corel, only Red Hat 6.1.

Maybe the slot in which you placed your NIC shares IRQs with
the on board sound ? Try moving the NIC to a different
slot.

It should be possible, with careful configuration of your system.
You'll need to run the root filesystem from a 'ramdisk'; use an initrd
for this. You should ensure that no running processes make the HD
their root (i.e. all processes should chdir to /).

You should then be able to cleanly umount/mount the hd when you need
to.

1. Even if it doesn't support isdn out of the box, a simple kernel
recompile will remedy that.

2. The Eicon DIVA T/A just looks like a modem to linux --- all you have to
do is plug it into your com port and set up a normal ppp connection.

3. If Corel Linux ships with a version of pppd prior to 2.3.11, you might
have problems using multilink ppp with this modem. With 2.3.11, everything
works just as you'd expect it to.

Subject: Referenced SCB 1 not valid during SELTO

I have a linux server installed using Red Hat 6.1.

I added a Tekram DC395 SCSi card with two Travan NS-20 tape drives,
rebuilding the kernel. That worked fine.

I added a Adaptec 2944UW, rebuilt the kernel with aic77 support.

Now when I try booting with the adaptec card in the system, I receive the
following message over and over:

Referenced SCB 1 not valid during SELTO.
    SCSISEQ=0x5a SEQADDR=0x9 SSTAT0=0x5 SSTAT1=0x88.

As soon as the Adaptec card is removed the system boots fine.

Doing searches at RedHat's site I see a lot off references to similar
errors, but no solutions.

thanks in advance

Subject: Adaptec ADP1505A and Linux RH6.1 SCSI
Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 07:36:36 -0800

I would like to use my SCSI CDWR on my Linux box
( stock RH6.1 kernel 2.2.12-20 ).
More than a week I am trying to make my SCSI card running.
I have Adaptec AHA1505A card. It is an ISA card.
It does not matter what I do , I am not able to load module
for this card. I am always getting the following
message:

/lib/modules/2.2.12-20/scsi/aha152x.o: init_module: Device or resource
busy

According to info I have the correct module for this card is
'aha152x.o'.

What did I try to do 'til now:

- I did try to set ALL combinations of addresses and IRQs
using 'pnpdump' and 'isapnp'. 'isapnp' recognizes
the card and sets IRQ. The output of the 'isapnp' is
  ADP1505/849934698[0]{SCSI Controller }:
  Port 0x340; IRQ10 --- Enabled OK
- I did try to put an append line into lilo.conf
  The line was : append="aha152x=0x340,11,7,1,1"
Yes, I did try other combinations also. I was able
to boot the system without any error messages,
but 'lsmod' did not show module 'aha152x.o' loaded.
- I read ALL available RTFM I found on the NET,
- I read SCSI-HOWTO
- I read a lot of messages related to the 1505 on deja.com

BUT

I am still 'lost'... I am not able to load that
SCSI module..

Any hint, link, advice, URL, pointer is more than
welcome

Thanks

Igor

Subject: Weird hardware problem; need feedback
Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 15:54:26 GMT

Before I get into the details of this issue, here's my setup:
AMD K6-III 400MHz CPU
128MB CAS100 RAM (don't know brand)
48x IDE CDROM
Soyo SY-5SSM Mobo
integrated AC97 audio (disabled)
SiS530 video (8MB VRAM (shared))
SiS 5513 IDE interface (used for CDROM only)
Creative Ensoniq AudioPCI sound card
Promise Ultra/66 IDE controller
IBM 7200rpm 13.5GB IDE Hard Drive (connected to Promise controller)
DEC 21041-compatible NIC (Farallon?) (10baseT)
Currently, I have Debian Linux on one partition and Windows2000 on
another. The problem manifests itself under both OSes, so I'm fairly
sure it's a hardware and not a software problem.
PROBLEM: Intermittently, the computer will simply reboot itself. I
don't get kernel panics (under linux) or bluescreens (under Windows
2000); the computer simply "blacks out" and reboots.
1. The problem is not overheating. I've left the machine running
overnight running SETI, and gauged the CPU temp at 102F, well within
spec for this CPU.
2. The problem is not IRQ conflicts (I don't think), because the
problem is not repeatable for a given device. I've pulled boards
(video, sound, network), but the problem persists.
3. I thought that the problem was a bad IDE controller (since the
problem usually occurs during I/O), so I put in a Promise card and
applied the unified IDE patches to the Linux side; the problem remained.
4. The problem is not BIOS. I've flashed the BIOS on both the mobo
and the Promise card to no avail. I've also made sure that I have
current patches/drivers for my hardware.
I'm at a loss, frankly. The problem is intermittent and does not seem
to be related to a specfic piece of peripheral hardware, which makes me
suspect either the motherboard or the RAM. However, I would think that
bad RAM would cause traps and faults, not the rebooting problem I've
been seeing. So I'm left with the motherboard.
Am I wasting my time trying to figure this out? Should I just get a
new mobo? Or is there something obvious that I'm mssing?
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone know if this device will work (esp. print) under Linux ?

Brother's web page on this product
(http://www.brother.com/us-fax/INFO/mfc8600/8600.htm) refers to '600 x
600...output (Windows GDI, Applie iMac/G3)...Later they indicate that it
"prints from DOS Applications (PCL4)...".

Finally, a ZDNet article
(http://www.zdnet.com/products/stories/reviews/0,4161,2347454,00.html)
lists the "Highest Printer Emulation" as being "Brother iMac Printing
System, Brother Windows Printing System, PCL4". I can't understand what
this is supposed to mean. Is PCL4 supported directly ?

My understanding is that PCL4 devices should print under Linux, but that
sometimes vendors mean that PCL4 is supported *through a windows
driver*. The problem is I can't tell if this thing supports Windows GDI
*and* PCL4, or what.

I have asked some local vendors, but their eyes seem to glaze over when
I ask whether or not it is a WinPrinter...

thanks for any help,
