When running a local network, you're probably running dns also.
Your problem seems to be missing RR (reverse-record) entries for
your dns-zones. (Your FTP-server tries to resolve the clients host
ip-address - if not available you'll have to wait for the timeout,
and that needs its time ;)
So if you have a nameserver-entry for
foo.your.domain IN A 192.168.0.120
then you also need a reverse-entry for your C-class-net 192.168.0.0
120 IN PTR foo.your.domain
in the appropriate reverse-file.
If you should need any assistance (besides reading the DNS-Howto)
just let me know.
:) Thomas Neurauter

Subject: New Hardware Book revd for Linux
Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 13:40:40 -0800
Upgrading and Repairing PCs, Linux Edition, Scott Mueller in
conjunction with Joe Devita, the Linux General Store
ISBN 0-7897-2075-2, $59.99 USA/$89.95 CAN/43.99 (inc of VAT)
Published by Que Books, a division of MacMillan USA, Soft
bound, 1387 pages. (c)1999, 2000, first print edition Nov 1999
Includes bootable Linux CDROM for troubleshooting.
Disclaimer: I am unconnected with Que, MacMillan, Scott Mueller,
or the Linux General Store, or anyone else connected to the
book, nor am I a publicist for anyone so connected.
I asked a question a few weeks back about my the ASUS P3C2000
motherboard and mentioned that I ran across and bought a new
hardware book that was revised for Linux. I promised to post
the ISBN info within a few days, but I kept leaving the durn
thing on my couch before coming in to work, so I've been very
late in posting the following information. My apologies.
This Linux version of Mueller's book is based on the 11th
edition of his PC version of U&R PCs, but appeared to
include extensive discussion of Linux specific issues.
The book covers the new Intel Socket 370 design, Pentium III,
AMD's K7 Athalon, RDRAM, Intel chipsets through the 810,
including recompiling your kernel for your specific
processor, though I didn't look too closely there.
The CDROM includes a bootable version of Debian configured
for troubleshooting your existing installation created by the
Linux General Store and includes installation files for a
"wide variety of utilities to customize Linux."
For someone building their first PC or Linux box, like me,
this appears to be a worthwhile book to add to your library.
CDROM Contents:
o Ques's editions of Partition Magic v4 and BootMagic (tm)
o Linux Everything Disk, this is the bootable Debian
portion with additional docs listed below
o Scott Mueller's Vendor List Database
o PDF files covering many BIOS, Pentium family specs, pnp
overdrive, modems, etc.
o Some important Linux FAQs covering AfterStep, ATAPI, BL,
GCC-Sig1, Linux, PPP, and SMP; & including 40 HowTo docs
o Seems to include docs for included Linux programs,
including old UNIX standards like tin, but also GNOME
and some others
Hope this is of some use to someone.

Could you post the output of /proc/interrupts and /proc/ioports
anyway? There might be a clue in there which could help. Also,
you say it was working under Windows 98. If you boot to Windows
98 and check under settings|control panel|system|device manager|ports
and check the Resources Tab (just as a sanity check to see that Windows
has the same idea that you do about the jumper settings ... there
are some things windows does better than linux, and
detecting/configuring certain kinds of hardware is one of them ..)

I'm going to take a big hairy guess here without any technical knowledge
except some sense about manufacturing:
Lexmark set minimum specs for the memory in their printers and ANY
memory that met that spec could have been purchased for production of a
printer., subject to price and quality constraints. Now as happens with
CPUs today, a supplier may have offered a higher spec batch of memory at
the same or better price than lower spec stuff. (Why lose a sale at
marginally less profit to a good customer?) Lexmark says they'll do QC
on it, and they buy a lot of overspeced memory.
Now, two years later we are worrying about whether we have to meet the
same performance as 50ns memory we see in a printer, and we fuss and
fuss, when 100ns memory, if it existed, would be more than adequate. And
what does Lexmark, willing to make 500% profit on its memory simms (and
there is NOTHING wrong with their profit making, have to say? Well,
nothing, or just that their memory is 50ns.
So far, no one has reported here of misbehaving Lexmark Optras due to
slow simms. --

Try looking at linux-usb.org. Some success has been achived with
various types of USB webcams. While others are still completely
unsupported (not unlike Win2K <snicker>).

My question is: Linux recognizes and mounts my cdrom which is a master
on my 2nd IDE. But I have installed a PCI IDE Controller, and placed a
2nd CD Rom on to it. I have checked my \dev folder and tried to see if
it is there, but see only \dev\cdrom and \mnt\cdrom. I tried to check
the startup info to see if it picked it up, but I did not see it. I
have check my fstab and mstab, but do not see this device. Is there a
way I can get linux to recognize it, and if so please reply or post.
Any help in this matter will be greatly appreciated.
Later I will ask how to get Linux to read the main CD as a CD-R, which
it is.

Use driver "nv". I don't remember what the card was I chose, but
originally I suspect the choice was SVGA. Then you edit your
XF86Config for driver nv. SVGA works, but is quite limited in
resolution/depth.

You answered your own question.......Buy another modem! Many people are
partial to an external modem as it's very easy to setup, and doesn't
require opening the case. You might also try going to www.linmodem.com

I think it MUST have the Lucent chipset.

Subject: Intellimouse Explorer=no scroll wheel...Need Help!
Date: Mon, 27 Mar 2000 18:59:59 -0700
Hi there.
Ive searched high and low for an answer to this problem. First off im
running the newest Mandrake 7.02 distro. (im a newbie to linux but am a
network admin who is used to running other o/s like windows NT enterprise,
and Netware 5.0) Anyway.....
I was able to get KDE and linux to successfully use my intellimouse explorer
USB with no problems. The only problem is that: i cant get the scroll
wheel to work at all in kde or linux AT ALL.
I tried several suggestions including:
1. I put the ZAxismapping 4 5 command into the etc/x11/XF86config file
under the "pointers" section
2. I tried to change the Protocol "PS/2" to Protocol "imps/2" and it
causes my mouse to go haywire on startx reboot so i switched it back to ps/2
3. I renamed the imwheelrc file to .imwheelrc and copied it into my 'home
directory' (for root user i wasnt sure what the home directory was, so i
copied the file to both /root and /home directories.......)
4. I restarted linux and when KDE booted i tried to execute imwheel -k .
It tells me that it cant write a PID (is that normal) or that it is already
running.
I got these instructions from http://www.mandrakeuser.org/xwin/xmouse.html
.
I would be TOTALLY indebted to you if you could offer some detailed
instructions/advice on getting my scroll wheel to work! What am i doing
wrong or should be doing?
