I have had a similar problem with my machine.

I have two hard disks in the computer, one is fixed the other is in a
removable drawer.

The removable disk (which I call home disk) is a win95 disk set as
primary master that I can remove and replace with another disk form the
offic. The second disk is a fixed disk set as primary slave containing
my Linux OS.

The 1010101 error occured when I removed my "home" disk and replaced it
with my "office" disk to do a little bit of work. While booting, I
modified my BIOS setting "to forget" that I have a disk on the primary
slave (setting to "NONE") forcing it to recongnise only the primary
master ("WORK") disk.

After my work was done, I put back my "home" disk in the computer,
which I forgot to tell you, contains the lilo in the MBR and rebooted
without modifying the BIOS settings by mistake. On booting, just after
doing the internal test and just when it was supposed to go to lilo,
...... 1010101010101010110.

I am not an expert, just a beginner, My opinion is take in my case,
lilo was looking for my primary slave disk and did not find it gave me
the 10101010 erorr message. Everything was back to normal when I
modified the BIOS settings.

Thx. I'm gathering info right now. Wait for the price to fall
on cpu. (As Intel's
just released Celeron 2 - with .18 coppermine tech today, and
higher speeds P3 and AMDs k7 are
expected real soon.) Should see a decent price drop from both
Intel and AMD within a week or so.

Working under Windoze doesn't help. All my machines are 100% M$
Free.

Yeah, SuSE got the most hardware supports, especially the newer
ones.
So, I won't doubt it if SuSE did help funding some driver's
development.

Anyone here with experience with this program? It comes with little
documentation and the default configuration uncleanly shuts down the ups
about 10 seconds after power failure. Just kils the whole system without
issueing the shutdown command Running smartups 1000 with 940 0020b
cable.

Note if I set the configuration for the correct ups (smartups)
I get this error :
ERROR: Changing UPSTYPE from SmartUPs to BackUPS due wrong Cable of
Smart signls.

Just changing it to backups stops the error message but what
is going on. Also I get a second error message ( or just one if
type is set to backups)

 Error! (shouldn't happen)

What shouldn't happen and where can I find some documentation with
 these error codes?

I check status after the program loads and it says all is fine. But
if I kill ac power , users get like 2 warning messages (as long as
they are not in xwindows) then it just kills the whole system.
Surely there is some way to make it do a clean shutdown ?

Thanks, Fletch

Thanks for the pointer on cheapbytes Laura. I knew there was a place
where you could get Linux CDs for like $5 or so, but I forgot where
it was. :)

The nice thing about Linux is if someone has a recent CD you can
burn a copy without copyright or copy protection worries. :)

I spoke with one of the Seagate rep's about support for an ATAPI / IDE

supported, even the autoloading DAT's. There are no extra drivers are
required, and all of the drives are supported by TAR, Dump, and CPIO.
He sent me the URL's for the web site that shows the official support:

It is a PnP card, but it is a PCI card. Isn't isapnptools for ISA cards?

I installed it in a Win95 machine and got the card to work, but never in
my linux box. Got the widely reported "linux discovers the card, but
hangs when it tries to play a sample sound" error.

There are some very mixed reports about the BP6, especially from those
who use the on-board IDE controllers or have earlier revisions of the
boards. It seems very polar -- either a 1 or a 5 out of 5.

Take a look at the URL below; a number of possibilities are listed.

I somewhat doubt that there will *ever* be a "free" payroll system;
the process of keeping such software up-to-date based on the
ever-changing tax rules is likely to make such an effort prohibitive

There are a number of proprietary options that may be worth looking

Date: Thu, 30 Mar 2000 01:09:06 GMT

I've read all the FAQ's & Howto's and followed directions, but I still
can't boot from a Promise UDMA66 PCI card.

I'm using kernel 2.2.15-pre14 with the Promise patch posted earlier in
this newsgroup.

If I boot from an ISA IDE card, the kernel recognizes and displays the
Promise info. In my case, hde is at 0x6400 according to
/var/log/messages. But a cat/proc/pci says 0x6000. Hmmm.....

Anyway, when I attempt to boot from the Promise card, I simply get:
Loading linux.............

and that's it. Even if I add ide2=0x6400 or ide0=0x6400 or 0x6000 or
anything....

Shouldn't it get farther than this? Do I need to compile the kernel
differently? Or use a different LILO option? Remember, it works
perfectly from ISA IDE.

Sigh.

What's the deal?

Thanks for the help!

However I can't even get it to work even in DOS. I have a
Seagate ATA-2 drive as master in IDE 1 with ATAPI CDROM in slave.
On IDE 2 I have a EIDE Maxtor master drive. The BIOS insert comes
up and sees drives but...when I boot dos with cdrom drivers
no C: or D:. Redhat 6.1 installer does not see them either

Any ideas? CMOS settings to "None". Promise is no help.

If this card is not what I want what do you recommend for RH 6.1?

Subject: Problem configuring Linux to work with APC UPS - OR - How to configure serial
port correctly?
Date: Wed, 29 Mar 2000 16:52:56 -0800
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I have a Linux box running Redhat 6.1 I believe - Kernel version 2.2.12.
This is a headless box working as our firewall.

I'm having trouble getting APC's PowerChute software working on it. I've
talked several times to their technical support, and they've basically
been helpful, sending me a new cable when I had the wrong one,
but I'm on my own to fix the basic problem.

I can communicate with the UPS (I can send one character ["A"] to the UPS to
produce a beep.) This lets me know I have the correct device entry (/dev/ttyS0)
and that the cable is connected correctly. But the other parts of the APC software
fail because, APC say, I have the port configured for modem use and not
terminal use.

I'd like to be able to use high-level GUI tools like control-panel... but..
for security and memory reasons X has been ripped off this box. That's
OK and I see no reason to change it. But that seems to leave me only
with low level tools for changing the port, and I'm quite lost.

I have been reading HOW-TOs and various O'Reilly books for hours, but
I cannot figure out how to change the way this port is configured.

Here's a dump of the stty settings for the relevant port:

[root@fishbone /dev]# stty -a < /dev/ttyS0
speed 2400 baud; rows 0; columns 0; line = 0;
intr = <undef>; quit = <undef>; erase = <undef>; kill = <undef>; eof = ^A;
eol = ^A; eol2 = <undef>; start = M-^?; stop = M-^?; susp = M-^?; rprnt = ^A;
werase = ^Q; lnext = ^S; flush = M-^?; min = 0; time = 1;

isig icanon iexten -echo echoe echok -echonl -noflsh -xcase -tostop -echoprt
echoctl echoke

What files do I need to change to move this port back to terminal use?
How do I control the initial stty settings this port has?

I tried installing this sound card with the es1371 module. I managed

did you mean to type 'io=c800?'

That wouldn't be a valid value...

try something like 0x280, 0x2a0, 0x300, etc... (just trying to make clear
examples - not suggesting these values are correct)

Also... you might try to see if it finds your card without specifying any
irq/io values with an 'options' statement for eth0.

You need to install the agpgart.o module and then make the link to the
i810 driver. I'm not sure what the driver name is since I am using
3.3.5 with the driver at http://support.intel.com. However, this driver
is now included in the 3.3.6 and 4.0 releases. It was named
XFcom_something_or_other. It is not an accelerated driver, so you need
to use the svga screen setup in XF86Config.

I think that 125 MB will not be enough for whole installation.
I have installed Slackware 7.0(full installation) and I've got 1GB of hard
drive space occupied. But you can choose basic stuff
(no X and window managers , etc), so it can fit.

Nope. I've installed slackware on similar configuration without any
problems. Secondary IDE controller (separate cable), Mitsumi on it.
I think that you have chosen wrong kernel to boot or maybe
it is a BIOS thing.
Try to mount CD first.
mount /dev/cdrom /cdrom (or similar).
Then setup.
BTW, did you run fdisk or cfdisk (not dos fdisk) after booting to setup
linux partition first?
If you did not, your problems are quite explainable.

Can't say much more, except that it can be BIOS or cabling
(check whether Mitsumi jumper settings are ok ),
and try to make linux partition (and swap partition), before setup.
