Just FYI...the bp6 has a few stability "quirks". If you're planning
on long uptime you might want to consider something else. There's a
mailing list that describes the various trials and tribulations. You
can subscribe with "subscribe linux-abit" in the body of a message
sent to [EMAIL PROTECTED]
I have a bp6 but I don't keep it up more than a day or so at a time so
it hasn't been a problem. My two Celeries are 366's overclocked to
550. I got the whole kit from http://www.puicorp.com. You might
check out www.bp6.com for more info.

- I timed the difference between udma66 and udma33, on a RH 6.1 system.
You get udma33 by using the on-board IDE controller, and
/sbin/hdparm -d 1.
There was no speed difference between udma33 and udma66; hdparm -tT
reported about 21 Mb/s disk speed. (and yes: without dma much less...)
- For this speed with udma66 you need the kernel patch, you can get this
at hedrick's page (see below.) Using the ideX=yyy, yyy hack does
give you a non-udma performance (you don't want that.) So, using
the on-board controller (as opposed to the promise UDMA66 controller)
might help you if you don't want to recompile your kernel.
- Using the tnt2 card was easy -- RH 6.1 setup, and tweaking with
XF86Config (xf86config ?)

The main point is that CNet is attempting to apply their blanket
copyright to anything they _only_ relay. If they didn't write it, and I
did, I'll be damned if they take credit for what I write, even if what I
write has no value to anyone other than as something for someone to take
exception to as you appear to have.
And yes, this is *still* an amiga, a well expanded one to be sure. Why
do I use it yet? If you had one, and were running your email and news
activities thru a program called THOR, you would understand fully
because linux does not yet have *anything* to compete with it. News and
email are handled identically. All I have to do is read it and reply as
I choose, all in offline mode. EzCron and THOR do all the routine stuff
whether I'm sitting here or not.
I also have a suite of programs to support, a cron (EzCron) that beats
the *nix style the linux box uses hands down AFAIC, and an X10 hardware
based home automation program (EzHome) that is what heyu *could* grow up
to be. Sales were surprisingly good at the WOA show in St. Louis this
past weekend. At those things the Amiga does well, it does *very* well.
Amiga, for those who understand, no explanation is nessessary, for those
who don't, no explanation will suffice.
Those Rc5 keys are combined from both machines. If I shut down
setiathome, then they goto about 685 kkeys/sec for the linux box, plus
the 22 kkeys this one does for 700+kkeys...
You are of course, entitled to hold whatever opinion you'd like. Its
called freedom of speech here in the states, and a lot of men have died
to preserve that right over the last 224 years. I've now watched 65 of
them go by myself, and thats my opinion. Somehow I think that you
have not watched the calendar be /replaced/ quite that many times.
Cheers, Gene

Lew,
Exactly what do you mean by a squeaky clean hard drive? Usually, fdisk /mbr
and fdisk to define partitions is sufficient. A low level format or
zero-fill is usually not necessary. By redefining partitions and
reformatting them, the clusters (allocation units) are unallocated, and the
FATs (or MFT) is recreated. What more do you really want?

I haven't used abit mobos, but you wanted any other suggestions. Well, I
like the ASUS P2B-D(S). The biggest drawback is only having 4 pci slots.
It's a slot 1 mobo, and to run dual celerons (which is not possible
according to Intel) in a slot 1 config, you either need to modify slot 1
celerons(not too difficult, but not for the faint of heart) or use ppga
celerons which are much easier to find, and slocket adapters
(some need to be modified, and some will run dual celerons right out of the box)
Some mobo's will run dual ppga celerons (like the abit) without any mods,
but I'll stick with my asus.
If you want more info on dual celerons, this is a good site:

The BP6 shows multipliers up to 8x (533 Mhz on a 66 Mhz bus), though
I don't think it matters since the Celerons are multiplier locked.
One cool thing about this board is its overclocking support, and many
folks are running 366's at 550 Mhz, give or take some. But you can't
hardly find 366's any more, and that's kinda pushing the limit anyway.
What I generally suggest to my customers is to get 466's and run them
at 525.
For future upgrading options, it appears PowerLeap is going to release
a FC-PGA (Coppermine) to PPGA converter.

Nope, it's 2.3.4. I'm booting it as a secondary choice in Lilo. So
far the only thing I've noticed is I didn't get sound unless
I compiled es1371 ensonique in the kernel instead of as a module.
Disk response is definitely snappier. I don't think I even enabled
the write-ahead caching. One thing to note, you have to do the
make config to select the PDC* support or you won't see the Ultra66.
Also according to a note on the patch page you have to put the param
idex=ata66 in addition to the ide2=0xyyyy,0xyyyy to let it know you
have the udma cable from the controller to the drive(where the 'x'
is your ide channel, in my case ide2.)
I'm not sure how far the raid dev. has gone as I just have the
single drive using ata66, not raid.

As far as I understand this is a known problem with HPT366 and Maxtor

I just bought 2 p2-450 chips for about $150 ea.
back when those same chips were $600 and the celeron 300a was $100, a
pair of 300a chips o/c and modified for SMP was a real bargain.
however today, I'd just opt to go with 2 450 chips (you can still find
them on pricewatch). less hassles, same EXACT performance and no
kludges.

1st - If possible go to the motherboard manufacturer's web site and see
if you can get a new flash bios.
2nd - In your bios setup if you can set LBA mode or other mode for drive
access try playing with the settings
.
3rd - if you were trying yast2 for instalaation (CD 1) try yast (cd 2)
for setup. Make a few partitions as follows: the 1st partition of about
20Meg for /boot, 2nd partition for swap (say 100meg or so), 3rd
partition for / (root). You can setup more partitions depending on what
you want to install. The book has some guidelines.
