Well, my box at home is far more stressed than the ones I've used at work.

I'd tend to agree, as I'm not a hardware techie nor a sysadmin. My
employers would probably balk if I opened up the case to set jumpers or
played with BIOS settings. That doesn't mean that it can't be done, just
have to find the "right" person in the IT/MIS department who's willing to
do it, probably with manager approval.

> I agree that if you look at the physics of processors there's no such

I'm not sure I'd agree. Overclocking is of course running the processor at
higherr than rated speed. This of course imposes additional physical stress
on the processor - more heat, for instance. If you can keep things cool,
well, then fine, I suppose. What about other issues that can cause problems?

> understand the point I am making. Most hardware bought by companies for
> professional use is sealed. If I open up my case and set the processor to

I'm not sure that's true. Adding a component to an otherwise 'factory' box
like more memory, bigger HD, another PCI card, etc., shouldn't void the
warranty. Overclocking might, but how would they be able to tell? You'd
simply reset your setttings when sending the box in for service, if it
developed problems.

On the other hand, I'd be pissed if I bought an overclocked system. That in
itself implies untruthful advertising; it means the manufacturer/system
integrator is advertising a system that (for instance) sports an 800 mhz
processor when in reality it's a 700 mhz part (or less) overclocked to 800
mhz.

> Actually I've just purchased a 1.2GHz Athlon on a Asus A7M266 with 512MB

Depending on what you had before, you'd probably be very pleased. It used
to take nearly 3 days to run a setiathome work unit to completion on my
pentium 100, now it's more like 3-4 a day (relatively busy system most of
the time). I didn't go the DDR route - it seemed too expensive and I'm
skeptical on whether or not too much of it is hype - and based on the
benchmarks (Athlon vs. P4) the Athlon - even without DDR RAM - is the way
to go. I opted for a 1ghz retail boxed Thunderbird recently - although the
price point favored the 850-900, at least locally here, one was only like
$5 more than the other. Hell, if you bother to overclock your system, I'd
be interested in your results. Right now, the 1ghz is fast enough for me :).

> Again I agree, however in my original post I clearly stated that if his

SMP might be an issue, but for compatibility, since (at least in my case) I
needed to get a new motherboard, why bother? Dual socket 1 (athlon) MBs are
really new. SMP on a PIII based motherboard has been around for longer. (At
one time, I was contemplating a dual CPU m/b with like 550mhz PIIIs. I'd
start out with one CPU and if I found I needed a speed boost I'd put in
another CPU.)

> the P4 is an option then. I know some companies who would love to switch
> from Intel to AMD, but who are afraid of compatibility problems. I really

Companies are also looking at systems - i.e., they want Dell, or Compaq, or
HP, or whatever. Are there that many system integrators who are using AMD
CPUs?

Subject: Micron Netframe MV 5000 with AMI Megaraid problems
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I'm trying to install Redhat 7 onto a Micron Netframe MV 5000. It has
an AMI Megaraid card in it. During the install, it tries to insmod
megaraid.o, but shows the following:

found suggestion of megaraid
found eepro100
found NCR53c8xx
going to insmod megaraid.o (path is null)

/tmp/megaraid.o: init_module: %M
Hint: The error can be caused by incorrect module parameters,
including invalid IO or IRQ parameters.

Then this throws the installer because it cannot find any valid
devices to install onto, and the installer reboots the computer.

On bootup, the megaraid card shows:

Megaraid disk array adaptor bios version 1.07 Aug 08, 1997
Copyright (C) American Megatrends Inc.
Host Adaptor-1 Firmware version TN0F DRAM SIZE=32mb
Battery module is present on adaptor
1 logical drive found on host adaptor

When I hit ^M to go into the AMI megaraid bios, it shows

Megaraid conf utility ver 1.01 July 10,1997

On the card I found "IMMD80100209"

If I hit ^altF4 during the install I see:

megaraid:v1.09 (August 7, 2000)
 <6> raid0 personality registered
 <6> raid1 personality registered
 <6> raid5 personality registered

The machine is a Dual PII300 with 400LX chipset.
On boot it shows Phoenix BIOS 4.0 Release 6.0
MB440LX Bios Release 6.0
The machine originally had NT4 on it. When NT4 was on it
it showed:

american megatrends 960RX RAID Adaptor
NT4 driver: mraidrx.sys
interrupt: 9
memory range: FC9000000-FCFFFFFFFF

I've looked at micronpc.com's website, and found the server:

http://support.micronpc.com/apps/srvrhub.asp?Hub=MV5000&Include=

So as best as I can tell, the card is equivalent to a Mylex DAC960
or possibly a "MegaRAID RPX Module "

I've sent mail to tech support @micronpc.com to see if they could
point me to the card's correct modelname (to match to the ones
listed at http://www.ami.com/support/product.cfm ). I haven't heard
back from them. Email to AMI said "match your card to the products
list". Yeah, I tried that before I email them...

Does anyone use this model of Micron or this card with Linux?
2.2.x or 2.4 would work. If so, what driver are you using and where
did you get it?

I've went through deja (now google), I found a lot of mentions of
Megaraid, and the kernel, and the kernel archives, but nothing that
I seemed to be able to use.

I looked at /usr/src/linux/drivers/scsi/megaraid.c (2.4.2) and it
lists: MegaRAID 418, 428, 438, 466, 762, 467 and 490.

Maybe this card is not supported by the megaraid driver?

Any help appreciated...

I have a major problem with my Epson 777. First off, I know the hardware
involved works fine, because the printer behaves properly when I boot the
machine into Win2000. However, under Linux (kernel 2.2.19/smp, redhat 6.2),
the parallel port is probed and the printer is detected. But, I can't print
anything, whether through lpd or direct to /dev/lp0.

I get no errors from these printing items, I just don't get any output on
the printer. Any ideas?

Apart from RH7 being a dog of a OS, the problem is the megaraid driver,
its broken big time, still not fixed in the official 2.4.2 kernel release.
A patch has been available from 2.4 ac7, works well with me, with my
MegaRaid 438. Also looked at the driver on the megatrends.com web site,
also broken.

I have patched driver files that work well for me, want me to email them?

What do you think "rated" means?

Answer: it's the number stamped on the side. Is this number correlated
with the maximum speed of the unit? Answer, no, not for low-speed
ratings. The rating is purely market driven for such units. Buy a
low-speed unit when the market average is way beyond that and you'll
find the unit is the same as the average unit. Just the number on the
side is different, because that's how the market is maintained. The
number is a minimum, and not a guaranteed minimum either .. just a
number at which they're willing to replace it if it doesn't work.

> on the processor - more heat, for instance. If you can keep things cool,

No, not more heat than other processors running at that speed.

True .. most such boxes come with tape. As I remarked, such taping
voids Trade Description laws, because an IBM PC is by definition
extensible by cards, memory, disks, etc. etc.

> On the other hand, I'd be pissed if I bought an overclocked system. That in

Then you'd be pissed often. You do it every time you buy a
top-of-the-line unit. The "fastest" chips are the "overclocked" ones.
Intel does it. AMD does it (nearly all AMD chips have been "overclocked"
by usual criteria .. they need extensive extra cooling just to get them
working at their "rated" speed, for example).

> processor when in reality it's a 700 mhz part (or less) overclocked to 800

The number on the side is a MINIMUM. It is a
guarantee by the manufacturer that they'll exchange the chip if it
doesn't work at that speed.

DDR looks a genuine technology leap. The bus speeds are already over 2x the
current technologies offerings. You should go for it.

Eh? How can AMD do SMP? Intel has the patent!

Yes, there are alternative "open smp" specs floating round, have been
for years, but I never heard of anyone producing a mobo for it. There'd
be no software for it if they did. Are you saying that somebody has
finally produced a mobo for the open spec?

Dell and Compaq have been signed up with Intel for the P4 for years. That's
why they're all currently grimacing together over the P4s technical
failures .. and staying very quiet about it, hoping that the next
months will bring some rescue path.

I am having some issues.. where downloads timeout on my masq pc's.

I know i have seen a problem like this on a SCO box once with the same

I've had similar noises coming out of a 30gb Maxtor
installed as slave on the second ide channel behind
an hp7550i CDRW as master (as per HP). Came up in
either Windows or Linux at times.

All BIOS detect is set to auto/lba.

I moved the 30gb Maxtor to slave on the
  first channel and the symptoms stopped;
there was nothing wrong with the drive!

Now when I test with another drive (and
I even tempted fate once with the 30gb again)
as slave behind the CDRW the problem resurfaces
  but not invariably.

This one's more than I can count on two fingers
running both of my IQ's full tilt >|:-)

Any words of wisdom out there? I 'would' like
to use that slot at time with confidence.

Subject: Sudden SCSI Zip Problem w/ RH 7

I'm running a home-brew PC with an Adaptec 2940U SCSI adapter (PCI) with a
couple of drives and CDROM on the internal chain, and a single SCSI Zip drive
on the external chain.

This arrangement worked **fine** on Redhat 5.2, RedHat 6.0, and RedHat 6.2,
which was the last OS I had installed.

Recently, I decided to take the plunge and try out RedHat 7...
I backed up all my precious data to a pile of freshly-formatted FAT32 Zip disks
on my then-6.2 system, erased and re-partitioned my fixed hard drives and
did the install.

Everything with this system seems to work w/o a hitch, EXCEPT that now, at
boot time, I'm getting SCSI I/O errors with the Zip drive (device sdc4).

Here's what I see in the system log:

SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 6 lun 0 return code = 28000002
Info fld=0x30000, Current sd08:21: sense key Illegal Request
Additional sense indicates Logical block address out of range
scsidisk I/O error: dev 08:21, sector 2
SCSI disk error : host 0 channel 0 id 6 lun 0 return code = 28000002

I can mount Zip disks without Linux complaining. However, when I try to
restore my files off a Zip disk, I get I/O errors:

# cp /mnt/zip/misc_mp3.tar /tmp/restore/
cp: reading `/mnt/zip/misc_mp3.tar': Input/output error

I'm hoping that something simply broke in the aic7xxx driver and
that there's an easy way to fix it. Unfortunately, I don't have access
to a Zip-enabled Winbox to test this theory.

PLEASE, Please, please tell me there's a way to get this to work that
doesn't involve byte-editing!!!!

Many thanks in advance...

I would like to thank all those who responded to my query. I would like
to bring closure to my case by saying that it was, as Floyd Davidson
suggested, my motherboard that was the problem. After trying everything
else, I finally relented and bought a new motherboard. I replaced my
obscure BC133KT with an MSI K7T Pro, which has a reputation for
stability. The reboot problem has disappeared.
