Ken,
I find it hard to believe your problems are really altitude related. 10k
feet doesn't sound extremely high to me either. But then I could be
wrong.
One thing I could imagine has to do with your power line: have you
checked for power surges, lightning strikes and the like?
Power supplies for computers seem to get cheaper all the time, and so
does quality. They may not be as forgiving as the one in your 486 and
286. Radiation doesn't seem to be a big factor too since those machines
don't seem to be affected.
Just a thought.

Good luck,
Michael

I don't know if you found this file, but it helped me and I really
didn't have to do anything with Xfree. Just follow the instructions
and it'll set itself up.

download the server from the following link:

Hope the help is not redundant.

Personally, I'd just go for APC's Linux Powerchute software and APC's
smart cable. (You can look on the web for NUT-Network UPS Tools,
there's a page on http://www.attrition.org/ with the cable diagram for
the "smart cable") I built one with about $10 in parts from Radio
Shack and time, and have happily been monitoring my SMART UPS 1000
ever since.

This is what I've been using on my Redhat box, and it has done what
needed to be done upon power failure, but I never have been able to
get xpowerchute (the GUI) to work right.

Good Luck!

Dell XPSR350 with two hard drives:

Master - Maxtor 10Gig (Windows)
Slave - Maxtor 8Gig (Linux RH 6.2)

(plus internal zip and cd-rom drives) - and using LILO to dual between both
platforms.

** Problem ** : 80% of the time if I cold boot into Linux it will fail to
load, usually during a period of intensive disk activity such as finding
module dependencies or mounting local filesystems with a:

"hdb: irq timeout error"

type warning, at which point I am forced to power down the machine and try
again.

Usually after 4-5 tries I will succeed...but have by that time have forgot
what I wanted to do in the first place!

I never get this problem loading Windows, and if I load Windows and then
reboot into Linux it is fine. Strangest thing is I have only had this
problem since upgrading to the Red Hat 6.x line, using good olde 5.2
everything was hunky-dory.

Does anybody have _any_ clue as to how I can remedy this before I take a
giant axe to my Maxtor drives?!! Something in the BIOS I can try? LILO
options? hdparm settings?

Thanks,

Martin

The PCL emulation is done in software, not hardware, so it is part of the
driver you installed under Windows whatever.... The KX-P6xxx series are
all true winprinters, and requires Windows to work. I know, I have gone
through a few myself.

It still hangs, all the same...

In all cases with SMP 2.2 Kernels, the system gets as far as probing
the SCSI bus and then goes into an SCSI Reset loop:

   ...
   scsi : 1 host.
scsi : aborting command due to timeout : pid 0, scsi0, channel 0, id
0, lun 0 Test Unit Ready 00 00 00 00 00
SCSI host 0 abort (pid 0) timed out - resetting
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
SCSI host 0 channel 0 reset (pid 0) timed out - trying harder
SCSI bus is being reset for host 0 channel 0.
   ...

I have tried the RH 6.0 SMP kernel (2.2.5) plus 2.2.10 and 2.2.13
kernels which I have built myself - no joy. I have tried compiling
aic7xxx both as part of the kernel and as a module loaded from initrd.

The system is SCSI based, so booting without SCSI is not an option.
This also means that I can't capture dmesg output.

I'm out of ideas - any suggestions appreciated.

Cheers,

    T.

Does anyone have any recomendations for a Linux server vendor in the UK?

I'm looking at machines from Digital Networks (dnuk.com) but have no
idea of their reputation.
The kind of thing I'm looknig for is a dual PIII system with a ~50Gb
RAID array and lots of RAM.

TIA,

Subject: Re: Which of these Ethernet Cards?
Date: Wed, 5 Apr 2000 05:42:39 -0400

In my experience, the card itself is rather flaky (the C version,
especially!), the freeware drivers, while being actively developed,
seem to be a bit behind in terms of support for the new models, and
the new 3Com driver for linux is well, too new to judge. The other
thing that annoys me about them is that they don't seem to
auto-negotiate properly. You used to be able to boot off of a DOS
disk and burn settings into the EEPROM of the card, however, that
support seems to be now removed in the C version. I have also seen
3Com cards frequently lock up, or just 'stop listening' to the
network.

I have recently switched my network card of choice to the Intel
EtherExpress Pro for a few boxes. While I have had no problems with
the card, I have read a lot of horror stories about them.

After that, I recently starting using the Netgear FA310 10/100 cards.
These cards use the tulip chipset and driver, which is rock solid.
You also can't beat their price of about $20 for what I would consider
to be a 'major brand name' (I just can't bring myself to accept
LinkSys as a major brand).

Of course, YMMV, and everyone is free to use what they like. I just
don't feel the 3Com's are a good price to performance value,
especially for Linux, even at the $50/card wholesale price.

Buy an external serial V.90 modem. This one is guaranteed to
work in any OS that does have support for serial ports...

There is no reason for using internal ones, anyways, since
they are a royal pain.

Have you tried leaving it for a while? The IDE drivers should eventually
reset the IDE bus and continue.

Failing that, can you disable DMA for your hard disk in the BIOS?
