Subject: Harddisk on AHA2940: timeout; unusable system
Date: 06 Apr 2000 09:06:36 +0200
Hi,
on my Debian slink box that has been running for about 9 months very
stable I suddenly have problems with my scsi harddisk.
Looking at fstab you find the linux system on /dev/hdc. The critical
harddisk ist /dev/sda which contains /swap, /home and /cdimage.
# /etc/fstab: static file system information.
#
# <file system> <mount point> <type> <options> <dump> <pass>
/dev/hdc1 / ext2 defaults,errors=remount-ro 0 1
/dev/sda1 swap swap sw 0 0
/dev/hdc4 swap swap sw 0 0
proc /proc proc defaults 0 0
/dev/hdc2 /usr ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/hdc3 /var ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/sda2 /home ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/sda3 /cdimage ext2 defaults 0 2
/dev/scd0 /cdrom iso9660 ro,noauto,user 0 0
/dev/scd1 /cdwrite iso9660 ro,noauto,user 0 0
/dev/fd0 /floppy auto noauto,user 0 0
/dev/hda1 /mnt/dos vfat noauto,user 0 0
/dev/sdb6 /mnt/data vfat noauto,user 0 0
/dev/sdb5 /mnt/projects vfat noauto,user 0 0
/dev/sdb7 /mnt/n-disk vfat noauto,user 0 0
After booting up the box and using it for sometimes a few minutes,
sometimes an hour without problems suddenly the SCSI-Controller or the
harddisk (I do not know) crashes an /var/log/syslog is filled with
lines like

You can not use the system any more as saving texts or figures is not
possible. When the system is then shutdown by 'sudo halt' /dev/sda?
are not unmounted clearly.
As I did not change any configuration, I do not know what to do.
Any hints?

Hi
We had similar problems. But this minute, writing this mail cured
them...

We use a Tyan Dual S1662D board and an Adaptec 2940 AU. AIC-78xx. Also,
the board boots without SMP support but not with SMP support enabled.
The curious thing is, that the same Kernel (exchanged the hole hard
disk) works fine with a dual Pentium II board, and the same Adaptec
controller.

Same with us.
> I have tried the RH 6.0 SMP kernel (2.2.5) plus 2.2.10 and 2.2.13
Also 2.2.14 doesn't do better.
But what DID do better, was pluging the SCSI-card into another PCI-slot.
(???) Since you use an on board adapter this doesn't seem to be a
option. But it might encourage you to search for a bios update or try
fidling with the placement of the other PCI cards. If you have access to
another SCSI-Adapter you might give it a try, too.
Hope that helps.

Rubbish. /dev/hdb is the SLAVE device on the primary IDE channel.
Whether it's actually a harddisk or a CDROM drive doesn't matter -
it will be called /dev/hdb anyways.

Only if it's the MASTER or single device on the secondary IDE channel.

I set up the printer with printtool using the Laserjet 4/5/6 driver, works great at
300x300.
Anybody got any hints on how to send a PJL Statement?

Absolutely, I have seen that too. What a bear to track down. A double
bear becasue almost always, the issue will NOT arise when running
winders. Only in Linux. No idea why that is, I just know it is. Run
"only" the 128 stick, and you will likely observe the instability. I
have "never" seen any ramtest software or hardware checkers pick this
up. But, the mem is unstable! Only way I have ever fixed it, is with
another stick. No loss to the dealer, really, he can sell it to a
winders person, never hear from them again. I would love to really
understand this issue. When it arises, a kernel compile will fail 2 out
of 3 times, with nonsense error msgs, but, the box might run a WEEK
before corruption occurs. This has got to be some timing thing that is
right on the edge, and is not tolerated by linux. It has nothing to do
with PC-100, I have seen it in 32 meg fast page, 16 meg EDO, whatever.
I'm a 'puter tech, not an engineer. Can anyone help us understand this?

Well, I am _very_ happy to say that I am (finally) writing this post
from Linux, rather than Windows. Oddly enough, I have accomplished this
task with my laptop's LT winmodem, and not the external modem I had bought
to replace it. Nothing I tried worked for the external modem, but as a
last-ditch effort, I again attempted to install the Lucent "linmodem"
driver. This time, it worked. Now my new linmodem works better in Linux
than it does in Windows!
On an unrelated note, it took me a while to get to this newsgroup. On
the first few tries, I was only able to download alt.binaries (ie. porn
groups) from my news server. Strange, I'd say, but everything works okay
now.
