I cannot print.... Using printtool to configure and it sees my parallel
port correctly. I use the standard filter but nothing works. Nothing
ever makes it into the print que. Printer does not respond to anything.
Cable is definitely connected because it prints fine from windows...

Edit /etc/lilo.conf
In the section for each boot image, add the line:
append="mem=128M"
Then run /sbin/lilo to write the new lilo configuration to your disk's
boot sector.
The next time you reboot, all 128M should be used by Linux.

Modifying the startx script is dumb. If you do this, you'll have to
make your changes every single time you upgrade your X server.
Write your own script to mount your volumes and call startx.
Or even better, put these commands in .xinitrc - which is run by the X
server on startup.

I'm using RH 6.2 in my dualboot PII 350. I can connect without any
problems with my Palm IIIe using Win98/2000 in COM1
I previously used pilot-xfer without problems in the linux side. However
since some time ago, all my connections timeout, and I have to ctrl-c.
What can I do to check my settings. I don't remember modifying anything.
TIA.

Tim,
As long as you're running a 2.2.x kernel and Glibc 2.1 and XFree 3.3.6
you probably want to go to
http://support.intel.com/support/graphics/intel810/linuxsoftware.htm and
download the linux drivers for the 810 chipset. I'm using the RPM
(binary) versions on an Asus CUSL2 (815e chipset) and they work pretty
well.

I get similar problems with a Seagate 20GB ATAPI tape streamer if the
tapes are write-protected. When the tab is in the "Locked" position on
the Travan tapes, the drive gives I/O errors no matter what I ask it to
do--i.e., I can't *read* a write-protected tape, nor even query the
drive mt's status option.

Help installing on Intel D815EEA board
I have Intel D815EEA motherboard, and trying to install RedHat Linux
6.2. I also have Adaptec 19160 SCSI card, which didn't give me
problems during installation.
I finished intalling Linux, but can't seem to get the display
configured. Currently, everything is *so* big that nothing fits in the
screen. All the icons/windows are 3 or 4 times larger than the screen.
I launched Xconfigurator from runlevel 3 to make some changes, but no
luck.
I'm asked to choose a card, but which one should I choose? I installed
XFCom_i810-1.2-3.i386.rpm from Intel website. I'm still having
problems.
By the way, what is XFCom_i810-1.2-3.i386.rpm, and what do I do with it
after installing it.
I read that someone was successful, but he disabled the built-in video
because he had a Matrox card. However, I'm trying to use the built-in
video.
Has anyone successfully installed RedHat Linux 6.2 on Intel D815EEA (w/
integrated video, audio, & LAN) motherboard?
p.s.
I have Sony Multiscan 15sf monitor, but I can't seem to find it in the
monitors list.
p.p.s.
Will RedHat 7.0 be easier?

Subject: The Happy Story of bttv and the STB TV Card
Date: Sun, 24 Sep 2000 18:07:42 -0700
I just thought I'd chime in with something that those who use the STB
TV-PCI card under recent Linux kernels might want to see. I've always
found searching through the newsgroups to be a gigantic help, so putting
something back is something I've always wanted to do...
Anyway, enough of that. Here's where I was at:
I recently compiled the 2.2.17 kernel on my RedHat-based box here at work.
Of course, that had the direct effect of breaking my TV card support. You
see, the 2.2.x kernels are pretty much useless when it comes to running
the STB TV-PCI, so I've always had to go and compile my own bttv drivers.
That's not a problem, and I rather like having the freshest drivers
anyway.
So, off I go to the xawtv homepage
( http://www.strusel007.de/linux/xawtv/index.html ), which is where I
always start this particular process. From there I snagged the xawtv
source, and then followed the bttv link to acquire THOSE sources... then
followed the link from THAT page to get the latest i2c sources. Compile,
install, etc. You know the drill. I did the i2c code first, then bttv,
then did the 'rpm -ta xawtv.xx.tar.gz' to make fresh RPMs of xawtv. All
well and good, right? Well, mostly, but there were some bumps when all
this was done and I tried to actually watch (and, in this case, hear) my
TV.
The bad news is that I could get video, but not audio. The worse news is
that I was still doing heavy insmod and modprobe action to get even that
far. You see, I didn't read ALL of the bttv instructions, and once I had
done that I began to suss out the solution.
In the bttv source directory, there are a couple of key files. One is the
sample Modules.conf, which I merged and pruned with my existing
/etc/conf.modules in order to create a working conf.modules for the new
bttv system. Here's the key part for you STB TV-PCI users... there's an
extra 'options' line to add to conf.modules! Here's what the 'options'
lines should look like for our particular card:
options bttv card=3
options tuner type=6
options tvaudio tda9850=0
It's the tvaudio line that is crucial for getting sound out of your STB
TV-PCI, because otherwise the i2c stack detects the audio chip as a 9850
instead of a 9855, which is what we have. Feel free to add 'debug=1' to
any of those three lines for the sake of getting stuff logged.
Once /etc/conf.modules is where you want it, and a quick 'depmod -a' is
run, you should be able to fire up xawtv and get everything you want... at
least, you should get audio and video in a little box on your screen,
which is the point of the exercise.
Versions used in this exercise were:
bttv 0.7.42
i2c 2.5.2
xawtv 3.21
This particular process is contingent upon having the kernel module loader
functioning, but that's not terribly unusual. It's also really only for
2.2.x kernels, as the 2.4.0 test kernels are in a different state of bttv
and i2c readiness (probably more advanced, come to think on it). The main
reason I'm not running a 2.4.0 test kernel is that they tend to break my
remote web-admin for the UT server...

I have explicit PJL support in Foomatic, which would make this work
fine under most any spooler. If you can tell me the printer model and
the PJL commands you'd like listed as options, I can put them in my
database and you'll be all set. I keep meaning to do this with the
most popular option (duplex) but keep forgetting. Perhaps if someone
reminded me ;)
See http://www.linuxprinting.org/foomatic.html for information on
foomatic.
