Oftentimes when once stable SCSI busses begin to suddenly have problems, it
is usually a drive failing or a termination problem. Since you have so many
devices on your bus, ensure that your have TERMPWR enabled on your devices
and that you indeed are properly terminated. (SCSI, especially Adaptec SCSI
can sometimes be tolerable of misconfigurations for a while, then suddenly
become unstable.)
I suggest that you consider replacing your sda disk (is this ID 1?), get
good back-ups, and consider some kind of fault tolerant system to protect
your data, especially as you indicated you have critical data on this
machine.

The BP6 can be a bear to get going with SMP enabled. A couple of things
that helped me:
1) Flash the bios using the beta QQ bios on Abit's site. The one from
December (NP?) has got lots of problems.
2) Don't put any cards in slot three. This slot shares an IRQ with the
HPT-366 and even if you aren't using it, it can still caise problems.
3) If you are using a kernel below 2.2.14, add append="noapic" to
lilo.conf.
4) For any kernel make sure apm is not compiled in the kernel, that it's
turned off in the bios and just to be sure add "apm=off" to your
lilo.conf. So if you're using say the 2.2.10 kernel in Caldera 2.3 you
would wnat to have the following in the section where you boot to SMP:
append="debug=2 noapic apm=off"
I hope this helps...

Agreed! though I was stable on NJ, and continue to be on QQ. I dumped
the 82443BX config registers for both. Thanks for the reminder, now
I've looked them up. There are some differences:
Offset 13h, the AGP Base Register is changed and appears to better fit
my video card. The vidram size is now correct (was double actual before).
Offset 5Eh, The Programmable Attribute Map seems to now have ROM shadowing
enabled for D0000h through E0000h . This shouldn't make any difference
under Linux, or WinNT for that matter.
Offset 80h, The Error Address Pointer has changed slightly. This can
affect how ECC is handled/logged. It shouldn't make any difference
without ECC, but could cause trouble with the SMM BIOS with ECC SDRAM.
There may be other changes on the PCI end of the config. I didn't
dump those. These changes seem fairly minor, but it's difficult to
tell their full impact. Misconfigured AGP doesn't sound good with X.

HELLO:As strange as this may sound Ive ran the esoniq 1371 with
mandrake6.1When you use soundconfig if it says it found the card even if
you dont hear the sample sound(I didnt) try this.First logout and reset
your xserver then log back in.You sometimes have to after runing sndconfig
to make the card take.If you have a mixer icon on the panel at the bottom
of the screen pull it up and make sure the controls are turned up.I had to
do this to make mine heard. Also go to the control panel and check the box
it gives for sounds.See if you can hear the normal system sounds. It gives
a test button.Make sure tho that you select from both sides of the
options. What I mean by this is pick an option from the left such as
startup message and then pick from the right a sound for it such as the
welecome sound and then hit test.If all this fails do an ismod and see
what turns up.good luck wayne!

LILO gets confused by mixed SCSI-IDE systems. You have to figure out
what the bios addresses of the disks are and add something like this to
lilo.conf:
disk = /dev/hda
bios=0x80
disk = /dev/sda
bios=0x82 (??? not sure what to use here. On boot up your SCSI card
should tell you)
The first to let LILO know where the mbr and the /boot dir are. The
second for the root dir. This drove me crazy when I added an IDE Syjet
to my previously all SCSI system.

I tried the aumix... command from an xterm command line. Still no dice.
(Sorry, joining the conversation late)
I noticed that if I started kmixer, I could turn what appears to be the
"line" input all the way up, and everything else, aside from master
volume, all the way down, _and_ turn my speakers all the way up, I can
barely here the CD's music. I don't know what to make of this - I
haven't opened the system up for some time. I had RH 6.1 before, and
the CD player worked fine. Incidentally, I then wake the dead by
forgetting to turn the speakers down before a .wav file gets played.
Any help appreciated...

Internal ZIP drives are IDE devices, unless they're SCSI devices
(unlikely, I'd guess) and both are supported. You just have to find out
which interface the thing attaches to... just make sure you have
ide-floppy and SCSI disk support compiled in as modules (the default
in most stock kernels), insert a DOS-formatted ZIP, and try, in sequence,
# mount -t vfat /dev/hdb4 /mnt/zip
# mount -t vfat /dev/hdc4 /mnt/zip
# mount -t vfat /dev/hdd4 /mnt/zip
# mount -t vfat /dev/sda4 /mnt/zip
...one of these will work.
Hot-swap slots that fit both a regular floppy drive and a ZIP may be more
problematic. Can't test this; don't have the hardware or friends who can
afford the hardware, but try the above commands with the ZIP drive
inserted. Do NOT attempt to swap drives if you have a disk mounted;
umount it first and probably rmmod the modules before swapping drives.

See <http://lepied.com/xfree86/> for information about the Wacom driver

I don't know about Red Hat, but this driver worked fine with a Wacom Pen
Partner (serial port version), SuSE 6.3, and XFree86 3.3.6. However,
since I installed the new XFree86 4.0, I've been unable to get the Wacom

Just to be safe here, you are talking about /etc/XF86Config, and
not /usr/X11R6/bin/xf86config, which is a binary file. I don't think
pico (if in single user mode, you may want to seriously learn vi.
When/if your box crashes, that will be the only editor available to you)
would like editing a binary file. ;)

I'm now on my second motherboard (having returned the first to the
vendor), and seeing virtually the same symptoms as first time: if I
run memtest86, I show random 8 and 16 bit blocks of bad memory (it
doesn't even fail reliably on the same locations every pass; it
doesn't even necessarily fail every pass). This turns up if I have
two DIMM slots populated; not if I only have one (and I can use either
of my DIMMs alone, so I think I can rule out a memory problem).
It seems very unlikely to me that I've gotten two motherboards with
identical faults, and it doesn't ``smell'' like a CPU problem. So...
I need to hear from anybody out there using this motherboard for
linux. How does it do in real life? Have you seen faults like I am?
Does somebody out there think this sounds like a CPU problem?

first make shure the ones installed are installed propper.
make shure to a 'memory bank' complete.

If you want to get at the commandline from X: from whatever
toolbar/menu you have available, start an 'xterm' (or rxvt or aterm or
konsole). This will open a commandline window (something like a 'DOS
prompt Window' in MSWindows).
Or, you could toggle out of X (<ctrl><alt><Fx> where <Fx> is one of
your function keys), to get to a non-gui text console (like the MSDOS
commandline or MSWindows fullscreen dos prompt).

The problem with CDR's is that they're detected as SCSI devices, and
Mandrake sets them up wrong in fstab. This is a Mandrake bug. Type
dmesg and check to see what your drive is detected as. Below is a clip
from my dmesg:
============
scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
scsi : 1 host.
Vendor: MITSUMI Model: CR-4804TE Rev: 2.4C
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 0, lun 0
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 24x/24x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda
tray
============
Note what your drive has been assigned as. In my case it is sr0. *All*
I had to do to get the drive recognized is put a symbolic link between
sr0 and cdrom in the /dev directory. (This saves messing around with
editing fstab and stuff). Depending on the kernel you are running, you
might have to recompile it with scsi emulation support, but if you're
running 7.0, it comes configured that way.
As root type: ln -sf /dev/sr0 dev/cdrom
Of course if your drive is detected as sr1, then use sr1. This should
be all you have to do.. If it doesn't work on your system, you can
delete the link and look elswhere.

Subject: Installing Adaptec 1510 SCSI controller
Date: Sat, 08 Apr 2000 07:28:44 GMT
I am trying to install an Adaptec 1510 SCSI controller card on a
upgraded Mandrake 7.0 installation.
Computer: AMD 400, 192 Ram
I built and installed the kernal with SCSI support and the AHA152X low
level driver built into the kernal. The help in 'make xconfig' for this
drive says the AHA 1510 card is supported.
Boot message
kernel: scsi : 0 hosts.
kernel: scsi : detected total.
What do I need to get my host recognized?
My bios recognizes the SCSI card but it is not in /proc/scsi/scsi.
I've read the drivers/scsi/README, Documentation/scsi.txt,
SCSI-programming-HOWTO... the help in xconfig suggests reading
SCSI-HOWTO. I can't find it on sunsite's HOWTO area.
I seem to be getting more confused with every document I read.
This is my first time trying to get a SCSI card installed. What
configuration items am I missing?
Any help would be appreciated.
