In my time I have found this. MS has written things into the OS
that are intended to prevent on from "having fun." Now I could
forgive a lot but not that.

Do not write to prevent me from doing things, period. I get
upset and nasty when that happens. And I have been hacking PCs
since the Atari 800 before Boca Roton existed.

I would not be happy if GMC sold cars that only worked with one
brand of gasoline either. I got the same problem with MS because
they are.

        Simplest is this.

I do not have a DVD drive. But since it supports DVD regional
releases ... EF it it! [Yes, I know where and how to clear the
registry and I am pissed that is "secret" info.]

You are now in hog heaven, buddy. They don't always publically
support it but whatever your harware they will often send you the
Linux driver where they developed it but don't publically talk
about because of MS. Email them and find out.

This means that you don't have the ps/2 module being loaded (if you
have it compiled). I don't know the name of the module, but you'll
find it somewhere in:
  /lib/modules/your_kernel_version_here/
then type
  modprobe the_name_of_your_module
and it should all work. If it does, add the line
  alias char-major-10-1 the_name_of_your_module
to /etc/modules.conf or /etc/conf.modules, whichever one you have, and
then everything should be automatic.

If you can't find the module, then you'll need to recompile the kernel
and add support - see the Kernel HOWTO at linuxdoc.org.

Send the following to [EMAIL PROTECTED] :

I hereby presents a complaint about Canon U.S.A. Inc.(from now on reffered
to as Canon). I think that Canon is breaking The Clayton Act. They provide
drivers for only operating systems made by Microsoft Corporation (Windows
2000, Windows 98, and Windows 95). Goto
http://128.11.41.160/goto.shtml?/techsupport/downloads/index.html and look
at the Canon BJC 4400 and similar products. You will clearly see that a lot
of there product can only be used with operating system made by Microsoft
Corporation. Thereby preventing the consumer from choosing freely among
operating systems (Linux, PowerMac, and BeOS). That is against The Clayton
Act.

Hi,

I have just upgraded to SuSE-6.4 Distro Linux on my AMD-K6 400MHz
system. What I would like to do is to add a soundcard on my Linux
system. Currently, I have a choice to get either the MagicSound 16-Bit
SoundCard or the SQ1500 Quad PCI SoundCard. I know the later uses the
Aureal 8810 Chipset and the Aureal only released the compiled Linux
driver as a module (I wished one day it will release the driver's
source). I had tried to install such a precompiled driver to my system
for a Digital Research ThunderSound to no avail under Linux-2.2.14. The
kernel kept complaining with version error messages.

Speaking about the Aureal driver for Linux, it currently only support
aureal 8810, 8820, and 8830 chipsets. The question is which chipset has
more power and features?

Glad I'm not paying you to be my lawyer. With very few exceptions, a
company is under zero obligation to make anything for a market it
chooses not to be in. The solutions are for you to find a work-around
or to buy a printer from a company that IS in your market (a Linux
compatable printer). With the 2nd one, the Linux compatable company
would be rewarded with your revenue.

Your argument would require all automobile mechanics to service every
possible make of automobile, even if they were not trained, didn't have
correct parts/equipment or had decided it would not be profitable.

Do you have *any* idea how many companies do exactly the same thing as Canon
with their drivers?
It is a sad state of affairs, but hopefully the weight of the Linux-movement

Well thats fairly sad when an individual wants to sue for a products
known limitations. Now if Canon claimed their printers worked and they
didn't, you'd have something to stand on. Besides, the Canon 4x00
series printers WORK with Linux. I think the only model line that
doesn't use Win** drivers. Using a Canon 4400 now!

Straight from Canon's site:

Well that depends on whether said vendor decides not to enter a market or
whether that vendor is pressured by another vendor not to enter that
market. If Canon says "fine we'll stay out of anything but the Win market
because that's the best allocation of our resources" that is one thing. If
Canon says "we'd better not enter the Freenix market or MS will do
something bad to us because they've already told they would..." that is
quite another. You see that's what at the center of the argument; not what
MS has or has not done to individual consumers but instead what MS has or
has not done to hardware and software vendors to force what is ultimately
delivered to the consumers' desktops to be MS uber alles.

Newbie, so forgive me...

I've got RH 6.1 running on an HP Pavillion 6630, everything seems to be OK,
except that when X starts, it comes up as 320x240. It's horrible, I can't

This machine has the "Integrated Intel Direct AGP Graphics" and I have a
feeling this is not the best thing...but I'm stuck.

Can anyone point my to something to help me fix this resolution problem?
I've tried re-configuring XF86Config several times with no luck.

But i want to make one with cdrdao to get rid of the

there is no documentation or example how to do that.

I already tried several methods (it can't be that different

Are there any jumpers on the card to set IRQ and IO-address ?
You have to set the second card to another IRQ an IO-address and may
have to give kernel parameters if the second card doesn't live at the
standard location ( IRQ 15 IO ???) .
Read the BootPrompt HOWTO for more information about the kernel
paramters.

You're right, V3 won't do above 16 bit. Otherwise great card

Linux-meisters,

I am attempting to get this PCMCIA card working on a laptop running
SuSE 6.4. It has both a modem (which was K56Flex but was flashed to
V.90) and an ethernet adapter. At the moment I am just trying to get
the modem working. I made the following entry in /etc/pcmcia/config

card "Intel PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus"
  version "Intel", "PRO/100 LAN+Modem56 CardBus", "MBLA3256", "1.03"
  bind "tulip_cb", "serial_cs"

/etc/pcmcia/serial.opts looks like this:

case "$ADDRESS" in
*,*,*)
    INFO="Default modem setup"
    # Symbolic link to dialout device
    LINK="/dev/modem"
    # Options for 'setserial'
    SERIAL_OPTS=""
    # Should we create an inittab entry for this port?
    #INITTAB="/sbin/mgetty"
    ;;
esac

This seems to be almost working; the log file shows:

However, the modem doesn't work. With the above configs, the modem
should be accessible at /dev/ttyS1, and /dev/modem should be created
as a link to this. This doesn't happen.

Any suggestions much appreciated.
