Hi all,

my USB-Scanner Epson 610 doesn't work with sane from SuSE7. The
USB-module
recognized the scanner correctly, and xscaneimage and xsane are starting
up
to the preview window. During startup a message appears on the
commandline.

  (not exactly, but nearly)

[epson] unknown type R or level K, using B3

If I try to scan the program causes an error. What's the cause?

yours Dirk

PS: I edited the modules.conf and /etc/sane.d/epson.conf as described by
Karl Heinz Kremer. The kernelmodul-stuff seems to work fine. But sane
does not.

i have a asus p3vx4 motherboard with a 866 mhz

redhat 6.2, suse 6.4 and the new caldera 2.4
kernel developers release all bomb on
installation. redhat reboots or hangs as it
copies files to the disk. suse hangs copying
files. caldera hangs in the post configuration
phase. the p3vx4 has a via vt82c694 system core

here is what i've got set wrt my sym8751sp card

# CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX is not set
CONFIG_SCSI_SYM53C8XX=y
CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_DEFAULT_TAGS=8
CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_MAX_TAGS=32
CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_SYNC=40
# CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_PROFILE is not set
# CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_IOMAPPED is not set
# CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_PQS_PDS is not set
CONFIG_SCSI_NCR53C8XX_SYMBIOS_COMPAT=y

you might want to set symbios compatibility since you aren't running
an old ncr chipset. this will enable some minor improvements and new
capabilities of the 53c875 over an old revision of 53c810.

I have RedHat 6.2 running on an old Zeos 486 Mobo with Etherlink IIIB Combo
card.
I first installed it with the WIN-95B OS and disabled the PNP mode using the
3COM
utility. Then, when I did the Text install of LINUX, I was prompted to
install 2 devices
that were not configured. One was the SCSI adapter (Adaptec 1520B) and the
other was the Etherlink III. While I had to manually configure the SCSI
parms, LINUX
figured out the PORT and IRQ for the Etherlink III all by itself. It worked
without any
problems--including figuring-out that I was using the 10-base-2 Coax mode.

That is the usual place to look when asking such questions.

If it doesn't exist, the source code for Ghostscript is available, and

"Impressive output" is hard to qualify with things that are as
subjective as sound and graphics. However, a friend of mine bought a
Matrox G400 to put in his new system, and he's been loving it. 3D
performance is not quite as sharp as the latest greatest GeeWhizPhorce
3000, but 2D is extremely fast, colors are great, and Matrox is pretty
friendly to the Xfree86 people.

I'm not an audiophile, but I like the Ensoniq AudioPCI cards for sound.
They're cheap, deliver decent sound, and I've never had any problems
getting them to work under Linux. You may be happier with a
SoundBlaster Live/128/whatever they're selling now.

Anyway, video cards do not use interrupts under Linux. The video card
has an interrupt to enable a number of things that Xfree86 does not use,
or at least that's what I read somewhere. Besides, PCI (and AGP) cards
can share IRQs with other PCI cards, so if you were to throw in an
Ethernet card that wanted IRQ 11, you'd still be OK.

If the monitor isn't in the database of monitors you see with your X
configuration program (SaX, Xconfigurator, XF86Setup, etc.) then you can
get it to work fine--just look in the monitor's manual for the Hsync and
Vsync ranges, and enter those (usually in the "advanced" dialog box of
the program you're using.)

>VIAs driver set inludes an IRQ routing miniport driver, is this
>something I need for Linux too or is it already in the kernel?

I've heard of several people using that board, and they didn't report
problems. WinXX and Linux handle IRQs a bit differently, so there's no
need to assume that what's needed under WinXX is needed in Linux.

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] at cardiff.ac.uk

I bought an Adaptec 2940U2W SCSI card and an external Plextor CD-R
PX-W124TS and just can't get them to work.

I have already updated all software that I can think of, to no avail.
Updated firmware of SCSI card and CD-R,
compiled latest kernel 2.4.0-test8, cdrecord 1.9.

I can occasionally mount a normal CDROM in the CD-R,
but most of the time this fails.
If it does succeed, I can copy the stuff on the cd
onto the harddisk without problems.

So I guess the hardware should be OK?

Also, I can write onto CD-RW in -dummy mode of cdrecord, but it fails
when fixating. Trying the same without -dummy mode,
it fails at the beginning of the
write procedure.

I'm absolutely at my wits end. What can be wrong?

Thanks, Jan.

I haven't got that far. The i810_audio driver in the kernel is no good
for me; sounds come out extremely quietly and massively garbled. So I
turned to the ALSA project.

The ALSA intel-8x0 driver *nearly* works, but it plays samples 15% fast:

droids.au: Sun/NeXT audio data: 8-bit ISDN u-law, mono, 8000 Hz
tbirds2.au: Sun/NeXT audio data: 8-bit ISDN u-law, mono, 8012 Hz

Timings from "cat > /dev/audio"

             Normally Intel audio
droids.au 0m32.073s 0m27.469s
tbirds2.au 0m54.047s 0m46.308s

If you have any tips on that, please let me know. My next test will be
to replace pgcc with gcc-2.95.2 and rebuild everything.

1) Is termination enabled on the burner? If it's the last device on
the chain, it must be terminated.

2) Does the cable/adapter going from the card to the burner actively
terminate the high bit? This is essential in going from the Wide
   card to the narrow device.

3) Did you sacrifice the appropriate goat(s) to your SCSI chain?

My system crashes about once a month or so and I've narrowed it down
to either the motherboard or cpu. Does anyone know which of the two
are more likely to crash the system? I have an AMD 333mhz CPU and a
rather generic motherboard - but both are pretty new.

The system merely freezes for no apparent reason, and when it does
this the screen sort of dims a bit with a greenish hue accompanying
it as if losing colors, and Ctrl-alt-del does NOT work to reboot.

When checking out the motherboard and cup prices at a local computer
shop the guys laughed when I told them how often it crahsed "once a
month?!". I told them that might be very common for windows users but
I run linux ;)

I've been trying without success to get my Aureal AudioPCI sound card
working under Linux for a couple of months. I've tried all of the
versions of the drivers provided by linux.aureal.com, but none have
worked. When I install the drivers, they compile correctly and the
modules are installed, and XMMS ceases to complain that the sound card is
incorrectly configured. However, I can't get any sound at all, in any
program. I've noticed one weird thing:

My CDROM drive has a "Play" button on the front. Under Windoze, this
button will play a music CD through the sound card without any software
intervention. However, this does not work under Linux with the aureal
drivers installed.

Does anybody have experience getting this card to work or any additional
insight? I've heard other people say it was a breeze ... not so for me.
Just for reference, I'm running Red Hat 6.2 with 2.2.17 kernel, but I've
also tried installing the drivers under 2.2.14

Thanks in advance!
