Subject: Memory problem
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 00:13:59 GMT
I just upgraded my memory in my computer. But after upgrading memory,
then I decided to put Linux in. I am pretty knowledgeable in Linux. (I
can at least get around and I know most commands to work at a prompt
efficiently.) But I just upgraded my memory from 64 megs to 192 megs.
I now find out that Linux defaults to 64 megs of ram no matter if you
have more or not. I am told to get it to work you have to edit the
/etc/lilo.conf file and add at the top of the file
append="mem=192". Then go to /sbin and run lilo. I have done this and
it doesn't work. Lilo runs from /sbin without any error messages, but
after I reset the computer, the startup screen and the system info under
gnome's menu system both say that there is still 64 megs of ram
installed.
Something else. I don't know if this is relevant or not, but I should
tell you some other things I have to do to my system to get it to work
that may affect this or not.
When I first install Linux, my LS-120 drive doesn't work. So the only
way for me to get it to work is to go to a configuration tool in
Mandrake that adds support for ide-floppy.o in my kernal. But after I
do this, when I startup the computer, there is always two services that
fail from then on. But I know now, if there are not two services that
fail, my LS-120 nor my HP 7200i CD Writer doesn't work until those two
fail.
Any ideas??

Subject: p5a-b slow disks...
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 01:46:10 +0000
Hi, does someone know why a Linux box on a p5a-b mb seems to go very slow on
disk I/O? I've downloaded the patch 4 linux (ALi ide driver 1.0 beta 3 for UDma
33), and I'm using it. The I/O throughput is better then before, ok. But when,
for example, I do massive I/O with more than one app (say: listening MP3 while
browsing the web, like now!) the system can't afford that: I can use mp3 player
OR I can use Netscape. Otherwise the system seems doing a lot of job without
being able to execute concurrently the jobs.
Mah!! Do you know something on that?
Any help wellcome (also private email, if you like).
Tnx, a lot
Bye

To answer the original question... you can run xf86config and choose
the Riva TNT from the card list and that will get you the nv driver.
BTW the installation script for XFree86 4.0 under Slackware 7.0 gave
me a symbolic link /etc/X11/xinit pointing to itself! I replaced this
with the old xinit directory and now everything seems to be working.

I should think it is quite important to determine at whom this box is
targeted. If it is for a user new to Linux, perhaps it should boot
straight into KDE. Attention should be given to the desktop. Internet
connectivity should be there on the desktop, perhaps already set up as
much as possible for a free ISP. Star Ofice should be there, ready to
run. And so on.

*WHICH* services? That just might help someone help you. I have no
experience with Mandrake, so I'd certainly need more explicit info, but
even a little more of a hint might help a Mandrake guru figure things out.
Check for a file with "boot" in its name in /var/log and/or get the boot
messages from /var/log/messages if the screen scrolls by too fast upon
bootup.

Well, start off with firing up make xconfig, or make menuconfig from
/usr/src/linux
Look under hard drive controllers, and see what you see.
Also look in documentation in that directory.

This is truly strange.
I've rebuilt the kernel for many different reasons and never had a
problem. But this PS/2 mouse thing has me stumped.
I've selected "Mouse Support (not serial mice)" under "Character
Devices" in the config, as well as "PS/2 mouse (aka "auxiliary device")
support" under "Mice" in the kernel 2.2.14 configuration. These do not
have "module" as an option, just Y or N. I select Y in each of these and
rebuild the kernel. Copy everything where it belongs, etc. Still, the
kernel does not see the PS/2 port (/dev/psaux). I have a /dev/psaux
device. GPM complains that it cant load the char-major-10-1 module. This
must be for the psaux (since it is character device 10,1) but I have no
idea what module it's trying to load. There is no module called
"char-major-10-1" and I can't find any documentation telling me that
some other module is needed to make PS/2 work.
Any other ideas out there? :-/
Thanks.

Umm, you can't sue someone for not providing something that was not
promised.
Otherwise, we could sue all the printer companies for not providing CP/M
drivers.

Subject: LinkSys EtherPCI LAN Card 2 Problem
Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 20:45:47 -0500
Hi, we encountered a problem while trying to install this card to our
RedHat 6.1 System. Our kernel version is 2.2.12-20. Our machine is a
Compaq Presario 2285V(Free PC). The problem is: the system can detect the
card and assign modules ne2k-pci and 8390 to it, and it can find its I/O
address, but it always reports that the IRQ assigned to it is 0, which is
unlikely to work, so "/sbin/ifconfig eth0 up" will not work. We also tried
tulip.o module, which is said to be suitable for this card, but when we
use "/sbin/insmod tulip.o", it always reports that the device or module is
busy.
We tried to change the IRQ number in our BIOS, but our BIOS only has very
limited options on each PCI device, that is: whether it is enabled as a
PCI Bus Master, and a "timer" value, there is no place that we can set the
IRQ number. And "/sbin/ifconfig eth0 irq .." will never work.
So what is the problem here? Thank you very much!

Yes. They work perfectly (I'm using one right now). I suggest you
get a copy of pcmcia-3.0.14 and install it. Then make sure your
kernel has support for networking and modules compiled in, and does
*not* have support for Ethernet compiled in (it isn't necessary).
It's pretty straightforward if you're used to modules and don't mind
rebooting a couple of times while you figure out what you screwed up.
<grin>
Oh yeah, one last thing: Leave the "eth0" line in /etc/conf.modules
set to "off". Turning it on causes the module to load twice (once
by the kernel and once by cardmgr). It gets really ugly after that.
Just let cardmgr take care of it.

Subject: Y2K Linux Problem??
Date: Sun, 9 Apr 2000 21:48:05 -0500
I have a weird situation that *may* be related to a Linux/BIOS Y2K problem;
I have had Linux (kernel 2.2.13) running on a Pentium 133Mhz for some time
now, and never had a problem before February, 2000. Now, the date gets set
to some seemingly random value upon reboot (whether warm or cold). I
attempt to correct it in BIOS setup, but that has no effect. I assumed a
bad lithium battery, so I replaced it, but the problem remained.
Here's what has me confused regarding Linux: I booted to a win98 floppy,
(after correcting the date in BIOS setup) and the date was correct!! Reboot
a few times...date/time was correct each time!! Boot to Linux, date/time is
freaked out again!
Any ideas????

Assuming this is a Linksys LNE100TX (Version 2) card, the tulip.o/tulip.c
that comes with the Red Hat distribution will not work correctly. You
should copy the tulip.c file from the Linksys diskette 2 (I think it's in
the linux subdirectory) to /usr/src/linux/drivers/net/tulip.c (you might
want to rename the current file before stepping on it). Then, rebuild your
kernel with either kernel or module support for DECChip Tulip support, and
everything should work okay.
I hope this helps.
