I have have NOT yet had a chance to try the suggested "ChipID" with our
Rage 128 Pro, but I successfully installed Red Hat 6.2 by requesting Text
Mode (instead of the "default" Graphical Mode), at the first boot prompt!
NOTE: XiG's Rage Fury Pro Demo works with our Rage 128 Pro (supposed to be
the same ChipSet), but ONLY for 10 Minutes at a time without paying

no.
its primarily a software raid card, anyway. linux already has this -
for regular controllers.
for M$, this card makes sense. for linux, you might as well just use any old
ide controllers and enable the MD package.

I am running RedHat 6.0, XFree 3.3.5, ATI All In Wonder 128 with 16mb ram. It
works pretty well.
Before anything else, download needed files. One is ATI 128's driver from the
following link.
http://www4.ncsu.edu/~distclai/2daccel.html
For RedHat 6.0, download the glibc 2.1 version.
You might want to upgrade your XFree a little bit.. BUT, you do not need to
use XFree 3.3.6 in order to use the ATI driver.
XFree 3.3.5 works beautifully for me... I have heard XFree 3.3.6 has a little
font problem and there is a patch for it. I just did
not bother using it...
The version of XFree I am using can be download from Redhat's Web site.
http://www.redhat.com/support/errata/RHSA1999035-O2.html
Download those files (Because I do not know for sure if the XFree shipped with
RedHat 6.0 works with the ATI driver or not)...
When you install your RedHat, don't worry about the X setting.. Don't set it
up because there is no need to set it up..
In my case, I download all the files to a zip disk.
After I have installed the RedHat 6.0. Boot in Linux text mode.
Get my Zip drive up and running.
Install rpm files.
Follow the procedure from http://www4.ncsu.edu/~distclai/2daccel.html
Run "Xconfigurator --expert" after you have installed the required rpms
And I did not have any problem...
Hope this help.
Alex.

hi there,
our aim : parallel scientific computing (basically number cranching) under
linux. we're planning to form a linux cluster of 4 pc's (maybe more later).
questions :
- tips about building such a system.
- important things that we should consider before buying the machines.
- any hardware recommendations. for the time being we're planning to put one
amd-athlon 750 processor in each.
- how-to, faq type of sites and books about pc linux clusters and parallel
computing under linux.

For Xwindows you need XFree86 3.3.6 or 4.0. Or you can use XFree86
3.3.5 + the XFCom driver at http://support.intel.com/. You need to have
the agpgart.o module loaded (or loadable), so you'll probably have to do
some manual setup. The xf86config program will likely not set it up
completely.
For sound drivers, use the i8x0 ALSA driver
(http://www.alsa-project.org/).
Everything else should work fine, with the possible exception of the
internal modem if you have one. I have succesfully installed linux on a
Brio BA200.

Point taken, but I know that GNU Ghostscript supports Epson Stylus
Colo(u)r printers, I have one. Judging from the driver notes Epson has
also been responsive to direct requests. This must have been the case
for quite a while, because I have RH 5.2.
HP are just being very open about it to grab PR. If Epson is happy to
talk to driver writers for support, then that's fine. In fact, it may
be better this way because then we know that the drivers will be GPL
or similar, unlike some (not printer) hardware manufacturers who
support Linux but won't open their driver code.
I only say this as I have an Epson Stylus 740 and am very happy with
it, including the Linux support.

For an external modem to be "Windows Plug-n-Play" ready just means that
Windows will recognize the modem by the ATI strings it returns. This is
completely different from ISA PnP, so don't worry about trying to disable
anything.

Several things come to mind:
1) Handshaking problem. It is possible that the Carrier
Detect signal is not going inactive when the modem is
off line. Are the settings on the modem OK.
2) Cable problems? Are you using the same cable as before?
3) Maybe you just have to tell Linux to ignore the CD
signal. Is that an option in 'setserial'? maybe pppd
or chat?
4) /dev/modem (/dev/ttyS?) is locked? Check for a lock
file in /var/lock/.... or /etc/ppp/.... Also make sure
you are not using both the -l (lock) option in chat and the
lock parameter in pppd. They will conflict (found this
out last night)

When you try to access a device node for which the kernel has no
support, it calls modprobe with a name like char-major-10-1 so that
you can create an alias in /etc/conf.modules like:
alias char-major-61 lirc_haup
(for me this loads the driver for my IR controller).
So this means that the kernel is unaware of your ps/2 device addition
when you recompiled. Are you sure it's running the kernel you think it
is? Check the date at boottime (dmesg|head or cat /var/log/dmesg|head)
and see if it matches when you think you built the kernel.
Does /proc/misc have the line ' 1 psaux' in it? If not, then your
kernel doesn't have ps/2 support.

You might want to also check the c-media site for drivers - if you didn't
have the most recent version of the drivers CD with the motherboard (v 5.6
last time I checked)
