I need to configure a cisco router, and before I can setup telnet to it
I need to set some parameters on the router via the a 9 pin serial port,
with a supplied cable. I have a lot of experience with R232
communications, but I have never had to do it with linux. I need to get
a serial line chat session going with the router. I tried seyon and
minicom, but they seemed to only want to work with a modem.

I really, really do not want to install windows just to run
hyperterminal, so please help!

Hi all,
I will soon be building a new box and would like to make it SMP.
But am having trouble picking a board, any help ? I have used the
Supermicro P6DBE, 440BX board before, but I get conflicting reports on
it's max speed, some say it's a max at 450, others 700 or even 800MHz...
I love this board and use it in a Dual PII 400MHz NT Workstation, any one
have a board like this for P2 / P3, with IDE ATA66 / 100 ???

Socket 1 or 370 is fine... I just need a reliable Linux board !
And I hate built in stuff...! (Sound / Video / NIC)

Thanks to all,

I have a Zoltrix Nightengale soundcard with the optional optical output
board. I have installed the driver, and the card itself works fine when
the speaker jack is used.

However, the optical output doesn't seem to do anything. I'm attempting
to hook it up to my stereo system. The internal connection is present.

Is there an option I need to pass? Am I missing a connection somewhere?

I'm using this under RH6.2. ANy help would be greatly appreciated.

Never accomplished anything when playing about with the settings. I presume
that since I managed to get it to play sound that I don`t need to install
new drivers or anything just suss out how to get it load the config?

I got this line "alias eth0 off" when I did modprobe -c.
If I put "alias ne eth0" in conf.modules, I got both lines shown
when doing modprobe -c.

Hello folks, anyway to get rid of the first line ?

Actually, I tell people to never use auto-termination. The firmware has
been known to guess wrong.

I tell people to manually set their card's termination, as appropriate
for where the card is attached to the SCSI bus. The settings are simple
to remember:

- If you are only using one connector for the bus, then the card is at
the end of the bus, and must terminate both the high and low parts.

- If you're using two 68-pin connectors for the bus, then the card is in
the middle of a wide bus, and it should not terminate anything.

- If you're using one 68-pin connector and a 50-pin connector for the
bus, then the card is in the middle of a narrow bus, but at the
end of a wide bus. It should terminate the high part, but not the low
  part.

If you attached drives to more than two connectors on a single bus, then
your bus is not linear, but tree-shaped. None of the SCSI parallel bus
standards support this. You should rearrange your devices (possibly
involving the purchase of new cables) so that only two connectors per
bus are used.

I've been using a dual smp board ,the tyan 100(450mhz), for about a year now
and I've had no problems. However, I originally went with a board from
iwill, and it had a bios crash the first week. They wanted me to create a
dos boot disk and type with no video!

I posted a help request a few days back regarding the Intel D815EEA
motherboard and RedHat 6.2. There was a problem with the integrated

I just installed RedHat 7.0 on Intel D815EEA motherboard without
problems. The integrated video works fine.
Those still on RedHat 6.2 should upgrade to RedHat 7.0, which has newer
kernel, newer XFree86, newer this, and newer that, etc.

Hi,

I've got a Promise Ultra66 off-board IDE controller.

The Linux drivers that came with it only work with kernel 2.2.5. I'm
currently running 2.2.16.

I've looked through the kernel documentation, and the 'make menuconfig'
options, but I can't get any close as to how to get the board to work (if
it's possible with this version of the kernel/at all).

Please drop me an e-mail if you know how to do it, or have any bright ideas

This one is serious.

eth1 io=0xd800 irq=11 ;(Realtek-PCI)

Boot fail (meant modprobe fails).
Do insmod after boot.

Result from running NETCFG after insmod :

BEGIN
eth0 io=0xd800 irq=11 ;(Realtek-PCI)
eth1 io=0x300 irq=9 ;(3c509B-ISA)
END

Now both cards work OK, is this meant spoofing ?
Why supposed eth* setup (io & irq) reverted themself in between ?
Advises of continuing is greatly appreciated.

Setup like this:
1G drive for DOS(no windows installed and is the 1st hd, boot drive as
sda)
1,2G drive for LINUX(2nd hd as dos extend partion as sdb5)

I am trying to use a Wisecom Accelerator Pro 56K Internal Modem in
RedHat Linux 7.0. I have used isapnp to set it up at IRQ 4 and IO 3F8.
These are the addresses that windows 98 uses on the system, and windows
finds it at COM1. The isapnp init at bootup works fine, and produces no
errors. When I use the RedHat rp3 or pppd, they cant find the modem at
any com port.

I am pretty sure this is not a winmodem. If anyone can help me with

You'll need to install Linux to HDD which it can recognize without the
drivers, that is, connect your HDD to the regular onboard IDE adapter, and
let it install. Afterwards, you'll have to port your system to a different
adapter.

I have discovered that Seagate has some diagnostics one can download from its
web page.

However, the diagnostics program REQUIRES one can create a DOS disk

I think some gentle lobbying is in order.

In contrast, IBM has DOS-based diagnostics for its PC disk drives (Deskstar and
others); these can be downloaded complete with a disk image i(copy to
floppy using dd) ncluding enough DOS2000 to support IEDE and various SCSI
adaptors and to run the disk drives attached to them.

Not as good as Linux-based diagnostics perhaps, but at least there are
instructions there for Linux users.

I encourage those owning Seagate drives or considering their purchased to
question Seagate wrt its support for Linux users.

That's the way to do it.

If you haven't already done so, you should clear all of the modem setup
strings to blanks in minicom's setup, so nothing will be sent down the
serial port into your router when you start and stop minicom.
