'modprobe' might work better than 'insmod'... to help you with the
unresolved symbols

I have a similar modem (the Call Waiting flavor) from Actiontec. It works
fine. The modem I bought came with Linux setup instructions, and they were
simple.

hmmm... on the PCChips board - I'm not familiar with all of their boards...
but I have three M748LMRT boards - with all hardware working fine on SuSE

If you're willing to fiddle around with the cdj550 uniprinter driver
(/usr/share/ghostscript/5.10/cdj550.upp on my system), you can get
600x600. Here are my diffs for the driver:

I tested this on a DJ970Cxi, but it should work for any PCL3 printer. I
told Uli (the driver author) about this, and he said many people have
already suggested this and that it will be included in any future
versions.

By the way, you won't get photo quality, but it's still pretty good.

Hello Vsevolod,

another thing you could try to find out if your sound card didn't get an
interrupt/ IRQ is asking lspci:

lspci -vv (or -vvv)

This will list all pci devices in your computer. A device that didn't get an
interrupt will not appear. Up to 2 pci devices may/might share 1 pci interrupt
(usually 9/10/11/12).
I 've got the same sound card - a SoundBlaster 128 PCI - and it works
perfectly with kernel support for ES1371 only - after I removed an old Adaptec
plug & pray ISA controller. Neither OSS nor ALSA installed. Noise from
speakers, but KDE's control center doesn't find any sound card. I don't care
as long as it works.

If you have compiled the sound card driver into the kernel (no loadable
module), it shouldn't appear in lsmod. Did you load the driver twice?

Mathias

P.S. Using SuSE 6.3, which is highly compatible to RedHat, except some config
details.

Subject: Re: Y2K Linux Problem??
Date: Mon, 10 Apr 2000 13:34:10 -0500

I don't want to take up anymore of your time, but I just had to let you know
this...

I took your suggestion and tried the Feb 15 kernel - similar problem, e.g.
freaky date/time somewhere in the year 2030.

I took the next step, which was to boot the original kernel that came with
RH6 distribution. Prior to that, I set the correct date/time in BIOS setup.
This time, the date was correct, but the time was about 30 minutes ahead.
Repeated boots (warm and cold) yielded similar results.

So, just to verify, I boot to a dos floppy again- corrected the time with
DOS "time" command, and cold booted to dos again - The date/time remained
absolutely CORRECT!!! Through several test cold boots!!

I try the original RH6 kernel again - date is okay, but the time, once again
was about 30 minutes ahead.

I booted my latest kernel (2.2.13), expecting a whacked out date in 2030,
but the date was correct, but the time was about 80 minutes in the future!

One more interesting tidbit: During the linux boot sequence, immediately
after the step "Turning on user and group quotas for local filesystems
OK ]", it "hangs" for about 90 seconds (with either kernel) before
displaying the message regarding the fact that it is "Setting clock: " to
the _wrong_ time. Thus, it appears to have some sort of problem during the
clock setting step.

I cannot imagine what is happening here - I would obviously suspect
hardware/BIOS except the d*** thing works every time booting to DOS!!!

Gee, it's a shame Windows won't run worth a crap on a P133 like Linux did.
Oh well.

Thanks for your suggestions.

I didn't read the earlier part of this chain,

I think I have it!

After my last message, it prompted me to see what was happening in
/etc/rc.d/rc.sysinit, specifically as it related to the "Setting Clock" step
during boot time. Timothy (below) was on the right track with the hwclock
command. The problem seems to be that hwclock is run each time at startup
with the --adjust option, which tries to keep track of hardware clock
"drift". It uses the file /etc/adjtime to keep track of these variances.
Based upon the field values as specified in the man page for hwclock, the
values in my /etc/adjtime file were completely insane!! I moved the file,
leaving none, and everything seems to work great!! Somehow I must have
fiddled around with hwclock at some point, creating these silly values, or
it was a hardware anomoly. Anyway, the problem appears to be solved.

That could be an interesting one to file away!

Thanks for all of your help and suggestions.

Is there a way to specify the order of interface names for multiple pci
ethernet cards?

I have an ne2k and a via-rhine in one of my systems. I had set up
conf.modules with

alias eth0 ne2k-pci
alias eth1 via-rhine

The problem seemed to be that the the via-rhine was detected first and
the first nic is always assigned to eth0. The only way I could get
networking up was to reconfigure conf.modules and all my network files
to use the via-rhine as eth0. The only documentation I could find
regarding assignment of cards to specific interfaces applied to ISA
cards, not PCI.

I want to know this too. I want to buy a new printer for running on a
home-network with two W98-boxes and one Linux-box.

to me the difference is this :

with linux,
your installation gets better over time as you sort things out - once it is
fixed it stays fixed

with windows,
it WILL eventually fall over and require reinstalling - and that includes
windows NT - microsoft's 'enterprise' operating system

kev

as windows is falling apart it will drive you mad and suck away your life

Yes you can set up your 820. You need pbm2ppa (old version)
or pnm2ppa (new version) in order to use the 820. The
pbm2ppa is the old stanby which uses only black-n-white
printing, pnm2ppa is for both black-n-white and color. I
haven't tried the pnm2ppa version yet, but will when I load
in RH 6.2. You can get pnm2ppa at
www.rpmfind.net/linux/RPM/Applications_Publishing.html

Well, at least if any of your printers had any kind of HP emulation,
then put it in HP emulation mode, and use the HP driver.

create a directory under / called cdrom, e.g. as root type "mkdir
/cdrom". then just enter mount /dev/scd0 /cdrom or if you have an ide
cdrom use whatever id it has, i don't use ide.

Subject: Adaptec 29160?

Hello,
I have a friend with a SCO Opendesktop 5.0.4 system, Microway Fortran
and Foxplus applications. He bought an Adaptec 29160 controller and a new
fast 36 gig harddisk and found that SCO Opendesktop doesn't have driver for
it. He is thinking about SCO Unixware upgrade. I think he can get Microway
Fortran and maybe an xBase DBMS like Foxplus for Linux, but what the deal
with the Adaptec driver? Is it going to be a problem getting that?

TIA, Robert Marshall
