Hi,
The syntax under XFree4.0 is slightly different than under
XFree3.x. Under XFree3.x you would have something like:
Section "Pointer"
Protocol "IMPS/2"
Device "/dev/mouse"
Buttons 5
ZAxisMapping 4 5
EndSection
With XFree4.0, this should look something like this:
Section "InputDevice"
Identifier "Mouse1"
Driver "mouse"
Option "Protocol" "IMPS/2"
Option "Device" "/dev/mouse"
Option "Buttons" "5"
Option "ZAxisMapping" "4 5"
EndSection
Hope this helps.

Subject: Re: linux on PowerBOOK
Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 03:42:04 -0400
The only company I know of that has a Mac distro is Yellowdog
(www.yellowdoglinux.com). Here is a quick summary from their web page
for what platforms they support:
What hardware is Officially Supported by Yellow Dog Linux?
- iMacs, iMac DVs, iBooks
- G3 Blue & White and all G4s
- G3 Desktops, Towers, and All-in-Ones
- 1998 "Wallstreet" and 1999 "101" G3 PowerBooks
- Power Macintosh 9600, 9500, 8600, 8500
- Power Macintosh 7600, 7500, 7400, 7300
- Power Macintosh 6500, 6400, 5500, 5400, 4400
The following require an update, available online soon:
- PowerBook 2000
- IBM RS6000 B50, 43P model 150, 7025-F50 (in uni-mode)
The following machines should work with Yellow Dog Linux but are not
officially supported:
- Twentieth Anniversary Macintosh
- Power Macintosh 7200
- PowerBook 3500, 3400, and 2400
- Apple Network Server (ANS) 500 and 700 (see website)
- Synergy Micro Compact PCI/VME boards
- Motorola StarMax and clones APS, MacTell, and PowerTools
- Motorola PowerSTACK, FirePower, Series E, PowerStack II
- PowerComputing PowerBase, PowerWave, and PowerCenter
- PowerCenter Pro, PowerTower, and PowerTower Pro
- UMAX C500, C600, J700, S900
- Apus 2000 and 3000
- other IBM RS6000 models: 830, 850, 40P, Nobis, INDI
- Be BeBox
This is the same company that at the same time M$ put bloat 2000 up to
be hacked, put their distro up to be hacked and additionally posted the
root password (which isn't that big of a deal since all Linux setups
I've seen won't let you remotely log in root for obvious security
reasons [I'm not sure if this is a function of the sshd/telnetd, or the
configuration files]).
I'm a mostly x86 person myself, so I don't know any of the gory details.
One thing that I'm somewhat interested in is what Xserver they use. As
far as I understood right now XFree86 only works on x86 (and a few other
random platforms). If not, does the Mac Xserver support DRI? I think the
importance in performace gain from DRI might be worth sticking with the
x86 platform..
Aside from that, the G3 is a much superior architecture than the x86,
but tends to be a bit more costly.. then again, if you compare its
prices against Dell, its not so bad. I can't really recommend any
brands, as I don't own a laptop myself. I've been looking for a while,
but prices still seem a bit high.
Hope this helps,
Abe

Subject: Re: printing problems with ye old Epson740
Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 03:52:42 -0400
I will definately check the printcap, but I'm mostly trusting Redhat's
printtool to create it properly (its worked awesomely in the past for my
old HP printer). Ghostscript most definately is installed, and I
actually have slightly newer drivers more fitting of the 740:
/usr/share/ghostscript/5.50/stc740ih.upp
/usr/share/ghostscript/5.50/stc740p.upp
/usr/share/ghostscript/5.50/stc740pl.upp
The problem gets stranger, however. Randomly I tried printing something
half an hour ago, and it worked perfectly fine. It acted as if I didn't
spend the last couple of weeks banging my head in frustration, and there
was never anything wrong. I did absolutely nothing to change things (at
least to my knowledge).
What isn't so great is that my keyboard at random times will lock up
now. Its not so much an issue of timing, but more to do with if I try to
exit X (I'm currently running 4.0). Twice I had to manually reboot the
computer after exiting X because of the keyboard crashing, and then just
today when I booted into Linux (command line), the keyboard froze, then
I manually rebooted, and I had my keyboard back until I started X. I
then turned my computer off, and let it rest for a minute or so, and
things are working perfectly fine now. It sounds like a hardware
problem, but nothing like this happens under W$.
Most recently I installed RH6.2, and I think sometime after that I
recompiled the kernel (neither of these fixed the printer problem). I
don't know when the printer started working, but it seems it may be
related? Or maybe its two problems happening at the same time..

Hi I am trying to setup redhat 6.1 with the above display card which I am
told, at the X Configuration screen on the custom setup, that the Autoprobe
results are:
unable to detect video card
monitor: Plug and Play monitor.
When I bring up the customize X configuration screen and set the resolution
to 16bits per pixel and 1024x768 and press the "Test this Configuration"
button, nothing seesm to be happening. Is this what is meant to happen? Also
where would I get drivers for this display card. I have had no joy at the S3

XFree 3.3.6 or 4.0 both provide a very good 2D-accelerated display for the
GeForce, but there's only 3D support for 3.3.5, with indirect rendering (slooow)
and old drivers (6 jan.). Nvidia promised release of DRI/XFree4 drivers for
their chipsets "soon" (yes, that's their word ! :)). Should be annonced in
comp.os.linux.x or at www.nvidia.com ... (in a few weeks I hope)

What has "supported" got to do with "working"? And what does
"supported" mean? To you? Do you mean that there is a support team

Robie,
Thanks for the input.
I know I've built the kernel correctly. Checked the date stamp for
dmesg, etc.
So, prompted by your thoughts, I double checked the config.
It turns out that the "make xconfig" hasn't been updating the psmouse.h
and mouse.h under include/config for some reason. I have no idea why. I
had to edit psmouse.h by hand and change the #undef to a #define.
Which leads to the question: why didn't make xconfig change this for me?

I have a 256MB machine/Celeron with an i810 (i810e video) chipset. By
default the MTRR setting is being set as follows:
reg00: base=0x00000000 ( 0MB), size= 128MB: write-back, count=1
reg01: base=0x08000000 ( 128MB), size= 64MB: write-back, count=1

reg03: base=0x0e000000 ( 224MB), size= 16MB: write-back, count=1
reg04: base=0x0f000000 ( 240MB), size= 8MB: write-back, count=1
reg05: base=0x0f800000 ( 248MB), size= 4MB: write-back, count=1

reg07: base=0x0fe00000 ( 254MB), size= 1MB: write-back, count=1
This is a problem as there is no spare place for a video card

You have to use the Option key word, as in:

You also have to to say:

Or is there a patch for Athlon/3dnow support ?
Thanks,
Markus

I prefer Linux, but I'm afraid it's already driven me mad and sucked
away my life. Windows never quite achieved that...

The new kernel sources recognize Athlons.

I was installing RH6.1 on many servers with aha2940u2w and haven't any
problems. Always SCSI card was in the first slot after AGP. It doesn't
matter if system contains also IDE drivers. I was always booting from
original CD.

Hi!
I have a strange trouble with my PCMCIA ethernet.
It looks like all is OK in syslog, but when i want to send anything from
my eth0 it prints something like that:
eth0: timeout waiting for Tx RDC
One time has happened that it worked - 25-50% pacs was OK- ping and telnet
has worked. Unfortunatly after reboot it gone down.
My configuration: Thinkpad 755Cs - 486 DX2 50 MHz 12 MB RAM
Kernel 2.2.14 pcmcia packet 3.1.something.
Any ideas?

Subject: What device is RAID Controller on?
Date: Tue, 11 Apr 2000 14:30:31 GMT
I'm using a MegaRAID controller in a Redhat 6.1 Linux box. The information
from /proc/scsi/scsi is:
Attached devices:
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 05 Lun: 00
Vendor: ARCHIVE Model: Python 28849-XXX Rev: 5.79
Type: Sequential-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi0 Channel: 00 Id: 06 Lun: 00
Vendor: TOSHIBA Model: CD-ROM XM-5701TA Rev: 0167
Type: CD-ROM ANSI SCSI revision: 02
Host: scsi1 Channel: 03 Id: 00 Lun: 00
Vendor: MegaRAID Model: LD0 RAID1 2048R Rev: C.65
Type: Direct-Access ANSI SCSI revision: 02
What I would like to know is this; given the information, how can I tell
what device the MegaRAID controller corresponds to? For example, the
Python is on /dev/sda and the cd-rom is on /dev/scd so - what's the
MegaRAID on? Is there any quick way for me to tell, maybe an autoprober or
something of the sort. Any help is appreciated.
