Hey I bought a old TV-card on the market and am wondering if it is
supported by Linux? (I guess it doesnt have this Bt878 chip or so)
I have SuSE 7.0.
Any help of info?

In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,
One other thing to look out for. I'm running it on F-560 and had
everything working great. I'm using framebuffer mode, figured I'd play
around with it. Now lilo boots my win 98 in what looks like a
framebuffer mode. I know it not. But my screen is now only displaying in
640X480 when booting lilo when I go to linux no problems but win98 is
another creature. I can't get the thing out of 640X480 and it only in
the center of my display.
Even changing the lilo boot paramater now does no good.
if anyone else has suggestions please post.

Yup. If you're not afraid of devel kernels, try 2.4.0-test8. Got my HPT366

I'm planning to use an Asus P2B-DS in a web-server because of the

..and is the onboard SCSI (U2W) based on Adaptec AIC-7890 fully

I have an asus a7v mainboard with an onboard promise ata 100 udma controler.
I installed suse 7.0 (kernel 2.2.16) on a standard ide drive (I tried this
on a UDMA-drive
and it works on the ide-connector). After installation I couldn't mount any
Harddisk, connected to the promise controler. The standard suse-kernel
should work with udma-drives. But how can I use my drives, connected to the
promise controler?

An ATA/100 drive shouldn't pose a problem. Mine is ATA/100 (although
admittedly it is currently sitting on an older IDE channel which doesn't
support the improvements). I'm going to try it on one of the RAID channels
on my machine (which do support ATA/100). I'll let you know how it goes.

Are the sound modules being loaded on bootup? Try dmesg. It'll print up a
list of what happened when you booted the computer. If you don't find any
reference to your sound configuration then it isn't being loaded. If this is
the case try typing "modprobe sound" at the shell prompt. This should
attempt to load the drivers. Write down any error messages you get or
alternatively enjoy your newfound sound! If "modprobe" works, the easiest
way to get it to continue to work is to add it to your bootup sequence. The
files that control bootup are in /etc/rc.d I'm not entirely sure which file
you should put it in. dmesg should tell you which file comes last in the
queue (just look for commands that seem to be producing the output that
comes at the end of the boot sequence) it is probably safest to put it in
there at the end.
To be honest I am amazed you got that chipset to work at all! I had a
motherboard with that chipset on board for a while and the damn thing
wouldn't work at all unless I used the commercial drivers for it. Good luck
getting it to work properly. I think the above should solve your problem. If
not then try checking you have compiled loadable module support into your
kernel.

Hi all,
I have an Axis 560 Network Print Server that I was lent some time back
by a mate, and before I give it back I would very much like to get it up
and running.
I have the axinstall script, but when I run it gives me ": command not
found" numerous times and then:
'xinstall: syntax error near unexpected token `in
'xinstall: axinstall: line 65: ` case $1 in
The shell script itself is quite lengthy, so if you want to view it just
go to
http://www.axis.com/ftp/pub_soft/prt_srv/utility/axinstall/latest/axinstall
Has anyone else successfully setup this device? It looks pretty much
what I need so any help would be much appreciated!

I've found that it makes absolutely no difference where Windows thinks my
modem is. As long as I use the same IRQ in both operating systems I seem to
be able to get it to work fine. What seems to happen is this: there is
always one serial port on my system that is not set up at boot time. This is
the port to use (in my case it is usually /dev/ttyS3). I just set it up with
isapnp (its an ISA modem), and then run setserial to configure the port.
Therefore I would advise you to check which port is not configured in
/proc/ioports and try to set it up with the correct parameters with
setserial. I suspect it probably won't like the IRQ being 12. Try it and
see. If not then try to force Windows to use it on a lower IRQ (try 3, 4 or
5). If that doesn't work, check your bios. It may be that some IRQs are
blocked or incorrectly set. Failing that, I'm at a bit of a loss.

Wrong. I have a bunch of them in various servers, running PIII 650
Coppermines.
They only have a 100 MHz FSB. Since the multiplier on the chips is
locked, any 100 MHz FSB chip will work in them.

You are unlikely to be able to use the VIVO features of this card properly
without considerable tweaking. I have the Xpert 2000 which is essentially
the same card. When I boot into Linux with the TV connected, I get the
picture on the TV screen but X refuses to work. I think it probably needs a
lower res, I haven't tried it yet. As for Video In, I don't know what
chipset the card uses for that. If its a standard Brooktree 848 then you may
be able to get it to work with the bttv driver. I'm going to test this
myself but I haven't got around to it yet.
I have a feeling getting it to work properly may be a nightmare but its
possible it won't be. I'm going to try it this week sometime. I will post
the results here.

Is there support for parallel port scanners yet (or will there ever be)? I
know of the sane project but last I heard it only supported scsi scanners.
Also does anyone know if there is support for IDE CD writers? I just

tested it yet because I don't want to mess anything up.

He might well have read the manual - but which one. Not all P6DBE's are
created equal, neither are the manuals. The max clock speeds cited for
motherboards often just relate to what is the fastest processor currently
available, not what the jumpers can be set to. In fact, the P6DBE can be
set up to 800MHz - according to the manual revision 3.3. This seems to
apply to earlier releases of the motherboard too, even though revision
2.1 of the manual says 600 MHz.
Note that earlier versions of the P6DBE did NOT support the Coppermines,
because the CPU core voltage regulators could not go down to 1.6v - they
might work for a short time though ! Current versions of course do support
them.
All of this can be figured out (with patience) from the Supermicro web site.
Tony.

Many NVidia cards are said to have a very bad picture quality at high
resolutions (above 1152x864), because of the low quality of the
radio-frequency filters on the card. Have a look at the newsgroup
"comp.sys.ibm.pc.hardware.video". There have been several posts about this
subject recently.
Before exchanging your monitor, you should try it with another graphic card.
For example, a Voodoo 3 or 5 or, even better, a Matrox G200 or G400. These
ones are said to have a much better image quality.
By the way, I happen to have the same motherboard than you (MSI K7T Pro).
Did you encounter any other problem under Linux? I plan to install it soon,
but I already have some problems under Windows 98 and 2k (cannot make the
Ultra-DMA mode of my DVD-Rom works).
Thanks.
