Hello all!

Does anybody known where I can find a driver for the HP LaserJet 8000 DN
(or a compatible one) ? I've searched the HP site but could not found.

Thanks,

Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 20:03:06 GMT

Has anybody tried to install Linux (any distribution) on a Toshiba
2140 CDS?, It presents itself as a AMD K6-2 at 450 Mhz with 32 Mb of Ram
(sometimes offered with 64) a 4.3 Gb HD, 24X maximum speed CD-ROM , S3 ViRGE/
MX 3D graphics multimedia PCI video controller with 2MB Video SGRAM
soundblaster "compatible" sound board, USB, two Type II PC card slots or 1
Type III slot and internal V90 modem,?

The price is just rigth, but as the box "proudly" explains that it is
designed around Windows 98, I doubt to purchase it, as the objective is to run
Linux on a affordable portable.

Any Ideas? Is there any on the description that would sugest it could
be difficult to install linux on it?

I have tried the Linux on Laptos Page and a altavista search but
I didn't get no info.

        Eduardo

PD: Quick replies are really appreciate, as I have to decide very soon.

Look at PLIP howto.

This is Parallel Link IP.

This would give you full network access between the machines...
Using the parallel port..
Need a parallel cable called a Laplink cable or WIN DCC (Windows Direct Connect
Cable)
These are all the same cable.
I've heard that some laptop parallel ports where not programable to set
bits into input mode required for PLIP ... esp. older ones.
Though I saw no documentation about which worked.

Also SLIP or PPP should work across serial ports.
(Serial Link IP) is the older protocol PPP is the newer.
I've not tried this.

Neither of these is terribly fast, though no slower than your
WIN serial connection.

Hope this helps.

Gotta agree with Larry, the pbm2ppa works very well, been
using it for years (HP Deserves a biiig hearty kick in the
ass). The guy did one hell of a job. I found configuring
pbm2ppa very easy. I want to try pnm2ppa, but still ironing

Subject: Re: Software-RAID 5 on Linux SMP
Date: 12 Apr 2000 19:27:20 GMT

I've been running md for close to three years now, and md on
many SMP production servers with 7 drives configured in RAID5
without incident for over 1.5 years. These machines have seen
2.0.36 and many 2.2.x kernels over the months, none of which
gave me a problem.
Perhaps the problem you're seeing is not necessarily software
related. The Asus P2B-D(S) (which I'm assuming is what you
mean by "ASUS P2???") did have APIC problems with early BIOS
revisions. Try flashing the latest BIOS on that system.
Second, you might as well upgrade to 2.2.14, assuming the rest
of your system is 2.2.x safe. Before you do this, go to
http://www.redhat.com/~mingo and grab the raid-2.2.14 patch and
use it. This will bring md to v0.90 in your 2.2.14 source
tree, which, among other things will break your existing RAID.
There is an upgrade utility, however, this goes without saying:
Backup. Backup... Backup!
RAID is not failsafe. Operator error is the #1 cause of data
loss.
Why would you want to upgrade to md 0.90? Among other things,
it provides hot-swapping, hot-rebuilds, hot-sparing, and is
rolled into pre 2.4. You will need the raidtools found in
/daemons/raid/alpha from your favourite kernel source mirror.
I hope this answered your questions. In summary, I'm
personally confident that md 0.50 (found in older kernels) and
0.90 work fine. 52 Terabytes of IDE md RAID 5 attest to this
where I work.
Good Luck,
Eric

Do not use insmod, instead use modprobe, which is more dynamic.
Write the following command:
bigboobs% modprobe ppa
Thatll do it. Itll tell you which device to use (i think its
/dev/sdb1 for all iomega hardware). After this, you should
write
(This is the device it recommended)
                      |
                      V
bigboobs% mount /dev/sdb1 /mnt/zip

Hrmm. Without sounding faceous, have you read the
'Readme' on www.opensound.com regarding the Maestro
and ix86 Laptops as of version 3.9.3j ?!
(sorry for quoting verbatim but):
Maestro2 driver notes
Laptop users must set the PowerSave mode to OFF (or None).
We are investigating the powersave mode support.
Toshiba laptop users may need to run laptops with
    powersupply instead of battery. Alternatively,
configure the BIOS to set APM to MODE 2

and also of relevance
If you get a system hang on a laptop, then configure
PCMCIA services to ignore 0x200-0x27f, 0x300-0x3ff and
then ensure that none of the interrupts used by OSS
for MIDI are used by any PCMCIA device.
Edit line 6 of /etc/pcmcia/config.opts and change it to:
    include port 0x300-0x4ff, port 0x1000-0x17ff
other than _that_ of course, you should also maybe try
compiling the kernel (2.2.14 or one of the 'pre-patches'
which are available for 2.2.15) and enable the part under
APM which says 'Allow Interrupts During APM BIOS calls'
and also check for anything that mentions Dell by name
(i dont have a dell, so i cant comment more on what might
be 'typical' for them)

When you recompile your kernel, if you select the aha152x SCSI
driver statically (not as a module) then you don't need to use
the append="aha152x,0x140,11,7,1" in the lilo.conf, since the
driver in the kernel should do all the detection work by
itself.

Hello,
You have hit the nail on the head as to why
I ditched my spar-q drive. It is very nice to have a
Gig (or three with backups ;) that you can take with
you, but I hated the speed with which it writes to the
disk. It _IS_ cpu intensive.
There are somethings you can do to reduce the
overhead somewhat. Sorry if these sound obvious but:
 A) enable epp+ecp in the BIOS
 b) make sure that your port is recognised as
such (check via 'dmesg' if it is)
 C) _REMEMBER_ to set the irq on the parport
  module (echo 7 > /proc/parport/0/irq)
 D) finally if worst comes to worst, you can
'renice' the process to either get
more or less time sclies (you decide
via experience which is best ;)
there is no way to set (or 'renice') a modules
priority, it hooks into the kernel and takes scheduling
timeslices from there. Parallel Port drives are not as
fast (in the real world sense) as 'regular' drives,
so please dont expect the same performance as in internal
drive. This is not due to the parallel programmers who
have done a splendid job of making sense out of the mess
that is the parallel port (Spar-q drives always did chug
under windows as well :(
Of course, if you have time and money, an external
SCSI Syjet is quite quite nice ;)
(and plays nicer with the machine)
 Regards,
 Stefs

you can get them to work with some tweaking (they still dont

otherwise you will have to manually edit the XF86Config file IF

Hi,

    I have a Sony SDT-7000/BM tape drive. It is a DDS-2

So, apparently, my tape drive is not compressing. (I am using

How do I force my tape drive to go into compressed mode?

(In my old Solaris days, I remember that to get compression
to trigger on Exabyte tape drives that you have to give it

If you want to do it the hard way, SuSE has a good online help

In MSDOS, the application using the serial port gets the
interrupts. So there isn't really a global command like
setserial in linux, instead, you should configure the software
you use in MSDOS to receive interrupts (should be done through
it's setup or configure screen). If it lets you specify an
interrupt, it means it is able to receive them. You might need
special support for sharing irqs though.

Some applications and games use sound servers/drivers other

For example, xmms has an output plugin for the OSS driver, to

here's a rundown:
 alternative(non OSS) drivers:
  Alsa
 alternative sound servers:
  Yiff
  eSound
Personally I think yiff is lacking...alot; eSound is great yet
kinda pokey(it's good for me, whose soundcard has one channel,
that the server will mix streams down to the one channel)
I don't use kde(rather enlightenment/gnome), yet there may be a

Subject: Re: newbie question, RH and Dell XPS T500 hardware compatibilities
Date: 13 Apr 2000 15:51:24 GMT

Well! Alot to tackle here... Here's my go at it:
I know from personal experience that 3DFX has been very good to
the Linux community in releasing drivers and doing what I
considered their best effort to support their hardware under
Linux. Although you mentioned that you were NOT interested in
3D, I thought I should mention my previous sucess with it. As
far as the ATI boards go, the basic display capacity is fully
supported to my knowledge. If you get an ATI board with extra
functionality (TV-out, TV-in, etc) that may be a different
story. But any of the cards you listed *(except the GEforce...
it's just too new) should be fine for basic X-Windows support.
As for Backup options, the CD-RW sounds best to me. I love the
ZIP drive, and the internal IDE is a snap to get working,
however depending on what you want to back up, its limited
capacity may bother you later. There is certainly no problem
with burning CD's under Linux, like everything else, it's a
matter of finding software you like. For an idea, try
searching www.freshmeat.net. Just to give you one more option
in this department, if you particularly like tape backup, that
is also a viable option. An excellent tape backup utility
(which is free for personal use last time I checked) is called
Arkeia. I'm not sure if it will back to CD-R's or not.
For sound: The SB Live! card is slow in getting support (read,
I haven't seen it supported in the Linux kernel natively,
however there ARE other options here....more further down), but
I'm not sure on the status of the other two cards. That said,
the Linux kernel is hardly the only place to find sound
hardward support. You might also want to try ALSA (www.alsa-
project.org) for free drivers, or you might want to try the
excellent 4Front sound package (www.opensound.com). Their
driver sells for around $20 and is reported to me to be
extremely reliable as well as easy to use. I personally run
the SB64 Gold which is supported natively in the Linux kernel,
so I have not needed these options.
The ATA 66 controllers: Do you really need this? If so, you
might want to consider SCSI. SCSI, although more expensive, is
faster and more reliable. Support is almost guaranteed if you
get a mainline brand of SCSI controller. If you DONT like the
SCSI route, I have not heard of any ATA66 problems, but if you
want to play it safe, the ATA66 doesnt really offer enough
benefit over ATA33 to matter. As for size of drive, thats a
personal issue. I have running Linux computers (my laptop
namely) comfortable in 800 meg. So any extra space is just
icing, use it for what you want.
One thing you must be careful of in choice of modems: DONT GET
STUCK WITH A WINMODEM. There may be support, but why? Get a
standard 3Com modem (I prefer external, I like the pretty
lights) but internal should work fine. Also any CPU overhead
from a Winmodem is not seen in a standard serial modem.
As for the DSL choices, I am using an external Alcatel 1000
modem from Bellsouth. It links to my computer via an ethernet
interface. I'm not sure as to the support for internal DSL
modems, but if it's not here yet, fear not. It will be soon.
If you NEED DSL now, external modem is probably the better
choice anyway.
I hope this has been helpful. If you need anything further I

No scanner experience, but just about any ATAPI IDE CDR will
work. Check
http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schil
ling/private/cdrecord.html to be sure though.

What exacly is the "partitionless installation" on redhat 6.2?

Does it just run on a UMSDOS filesystem?

It doesn't have any partitions, so how do I access files that would normally
reside in /etc, /dev, /usr?

Can this be a permanment replacement for regular Linux, or not?

Thanks.

Subject: use cd-rw created in Win9x with Adaptec sw??
Date: 14 Apr 2000 21:50:19 GMT

I have ide read/write cdrom and so far I've only been
able to find info on burning CDRs. Anyone know where
I could find a HOWTO or other info on using CD-RW that
were created with Adaptec sw in Winx/NT?? I'd like to
be able to read and write them from Linux as well as
the Win9x/NT OSs.

So far I've only been able to mount the CD-RW drive for
reading iso9660 CDs.

TIA

If you have any success with getting the Montego A3D card to work please let
me know what you did.
I'm running Red Hat 6.1 on a Dell Computer with the Montego II A3D Sound
Card.
I rebuilt my kernel for sound support and installed the drivers from
Linux.aureal.com. No luck
Any one else out there have any success.

Thanks
   Gerald

I got a better handle on it - and the installation seemed to complete
correctly - however, when i tried to run "startx" - I was given a new
error, that read simply "can't open /dev/agpgart"

Subject: Joysticks and es1371
Date: Fri, 14 Apr 2000 23:23:52 +0000

I'm trying to get my ickle joystick working, it's plugged into my SB128
PCI, which happens to be of the es1371 nature.

I've recompiled the kernel nicely with the es1371, joystick and
joy-analog as modules too. I ask insmod to load the joystick modules, it
says fine, then i ask it to load the joy-analog module, and it say
'...device is busy'.

After consulting the kernal docs, it would seem this could be because
the port on the soundcard needs to be initialised first. Anyone got any
idea how to do that?

Thanks in advance,

Arthur Yarwood.
