Oh, I'm sure it's not you...
Let's see. Where and when did you obtain the stp/760 PDQ description
file you are using? Some older versions didn't support printing text,
which might easily explain this.
Check that your PDQ file says:
# It was generated by pdq-o-matic.cgi version 2.06
and in the 'help' says:
The execution information currently here corresponds to the driver
version after 4.0b2 (b2 shipped in Mandrake 7.2; this data
matches the CVS version). I'm attempting to track Robert's changes
as he makes them, so that as 4.0 approaches things will be in synch.
If not, then push the proper buttons at
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_driver.cgi?driver=stp
to obtain the latest...
If not, then there's something else wrong, which we may debug by
examining the various partly processed job files in ~/.printjobs.

the NIC.

That's fine. I pay about $12 for the Lynksys so my statement stands - buy 3
and have enough for beers after work.
3COM is overpriced and a cronic underperformer. I regularly remove them and
replace them with less expensive and superior performing NICs like the
Linksys - less trouble and better support.
I am always able to sell the 3COMs to tech-snobs such as yourself without
difficulty. 3COM has more money and promotional skills than technical
expertise.
Next time you wish to belittle somebody's opinion, just remember it cuts
both ways.
Just one guy's opinion, based on 25 years of experience in the computer
industry.

The best way is to use [linux] "fdisk" to partition your disk. It is a
bit primitive, but it gives you total control. You only need 8 M bytes
for "/boot". Use 10 M bytes if you want to leave more than 2 Kernel
images in "/boot".

I was given one. It works but I can't boot from it.
Can boot from IDE drive and access the 4 drives on the Adaptec.
Disabling the IDE controller and setting BIOS to boot from SCSI
causes machine to hang at the dreaded DMI message.
Any suggestions?

The error message is from GhostScript. It dumps the interpreter's stack
when it chokes on something.
Why it blew up on you is, unfortunately, another question.

Try:
setserial /dev/ttyS3
and see if it reports anything. If not try the other serial ports 0, 1, and
2. See, if any of them are connected to your modem.
It is possible that Mandrake 7.1 came with the serial driver installed. In
which case, you wouldn't be able to set your tty driver manually.
What does it report when you try to use "setserial"? Do you get an error
message?

Check this out guys, should be what we need:
http://sweb.uky.edu/~mabran3/linux/misc/
Scroll all the way to the bottom to read the directory info file. It
explains how to use a RedHat 7 bootdisk that recognizes the new ATA100
controllers. Patching the kernel afterwards is kind of a pain in the ass --
but what can you do? Pretty weak of RedHat not to include ATA100 support for
their newest release. ;(

Changing to the stp(???) driver gave very results. Will wait until

Ted,
After further investigation, I got ftape to work on Linux 2.2.17.
To make it work there are two kernel modules that must be loaded, or
included in the kernel:
ftape
zftape
If they are not already in the kernel (they probably are not) then here
are the commands to load them:
modprobe ftape
modprobe zftape
To see what modules are loaded in the kernel do this command:
lsmod

Rick
