Got it - love it. Great under Linux, use the dj550 driver, is fairly ok,
supports 600x600 and uses too much ink. but still ok.
For great performance start win95 from a 1 Gig partition and print using the
normal win drivers.
Read somewhere about HP developing drivers for linux.
All in all: I love my 930 - under Linux!

fdisk, even if it goes completely berserk, should not force you into
single-user mode. "there is a problem" is about as non-specific and
unhelpful as things could get--please post the exact error message that
fdisk gives you. If it's the "the number of cylinders on this disk is >
1024..." message, no worries; this is normal with large disks and should
not hurt Linux at all.
Make sure the disk is being seen by the BIOS at startup if this is an IDE
disk (you didn't say whether it was IDE or SCSI!) Make sure the
translation mode is set to "AUTO", as this will provide the best results.
Make sure that "EZ-Drive" or anything silly like that is not installed on
the disk; Linux doesn't need help dealing with large disks.

Immediately after you try to access your CD-RW after bootup, the output of
dmesg should say something like
scsi0 : SCSI host adapter emulation for IDE ATAPI devices
scsi : 1 host.
Detected scsi CD-ROM sr0 at scsi0, channel 0, id 1, lun 0
sr0: scsi3-mmc drive: 16x/16x writer cd/rw xa/form2 cdda tray
...and that means that the SCSI emulation is working.
You cannot mount a blank CD-R in any way; all writing is done to the raw
device /dev/sg0.

Oh yes. I've been telling people to do a Deja search on keyword "CD-R"
and author /me, but that's not a good long-term solution. I'll contact
the CD-Writing-Howto maintainer, see if he'll put a 4-step piece of advice

sg pieces by default... I hope your experience will help others out!

I recently upgraded my old 430 TX mobo (MSI 5156) with an AMD K6-2 450

unable to run Mandrake install or tombsrt. I went back installing my

I recompiled the kernel. I tried again with the AMD K6-2 and I get the

Subject: SAFE brand UPS serial interface/control questions
Date: Sat, 15 Apr 2000 17:57:12 GMT
I have an Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) that was made by SAFE (a
company I can't seem to find any more). Other than needing to replace
the batteries a few years ago, I've used the UPS without problems for
about 12 years now.
The UPS has a serial port that supplies status information about the UPS
but I have never previously tried to use it. I would like to find out
how to connect that serial port to my Linux box and have software, that
uses the information it provides, to cleanly shut down before the power
shuts off.
So, does anyone know anything about what happened to the SAFE UPS
company?
Or, does anyone have the specifications of the serial port for my UPS
(SAFE model # S001-85025-01, 500A) and Linux compatible software for
using the information it provides to shut down cleanly?

Could it be the cpu fan or the powersupply fan? Another source, though
probably no it you case is that the HALT instruction Linux uses to save
power can cause noise in nearby speakers. You can disable it with the
NO_HLT instruction on LILO.

There is some generic UPS software for Linux you can look for which are
fairly configurable. What you do is connect the UPS to the serial port
but don't power the system off the UPS. Then you run some test software
within the UPS package and start doing various things to the UPS to see
how the affects the serial port. This information is used to form the
configuration files. This won't let you use the fancy features of the
UPS
but the basic shutdown/wakeup stuff.

OK. I just had the same problem.

It's now $84.95 with free shipping. The web page claims 284 are still
available. I bought one a week ago. The main caveat is that you'll pay a
lot on memory and supplies. As a PostScript printer, this thing needs
lots of RAM. It comes with 4MB, which is adequate for text or line art,
but not for something like a full-page printout of a graphics file (say,
a photo from a digital camera). Crucial was slow in filling my order, so I
still don't have my SIMM. :-( Print cartridges are also pricey -- $25-$45,
depending on which cartridge and from what dealer.

to go into single mode to fix the problem. I figured that advance users would be
familiar
with my problem when I said I was adding a new drive and as such would know the error

So having said this, what steps do I need to do to replace my one IDE with another IDE?
Are there any special commands I need to run, scripts that need editing, or something
else.
Thanks for the help.

Thanks, one more question though:
What do you use as the "base" station? On their web site it looks like
there are a few options:
ORINOCO Ethernet & Serial Converter (Formerly WaveLAN Ethernet/Serial
Converter)
or
ORINOCO RG-1000 Residential Gateway
There are a few others but these two look like they're meant for small
networks. I just picked up a copy of PC Magazine that reviews a few of
these and they say that they used thw WavePoint-II access point which is
~$1000. The Ethernet & Serial Converter looks to go for about $400 so if it
will do I'd really like to save the 600 bucks.

unfortunately is none of these...
i already tried stopping the fan (and even changing it actually), but the
noise persists... the speaker is the first thing that i suspected but i
disconnected it too, so it's not...
and the noise only comes if i move the mouse/receive data from the
modem/access disks/etc., not when the cpu is idle/halted, therefore i think it
has something to do with interrupts
thx anyway
