I've installed Linux Mandrake 7.0 on the Asus K7V (Ahtlon 700 MHz) with
no problems.
This was on IDE disk. I say this because I'me having the bigges problems
with my Advansys SCSI controller witch only recognices the drives half
the time.
On the IDE disk Linux Mandrake 7.0 installed like a dream recogniced all
devices (have disabled onboard USB and audio). Never the less I must
agree that K7V is a very new board and therefor berhaps not the best
Linux board.
I have acturlly found a small BIOS fault. Some times when rebooting the
BIOS thinks the previos shutdown was because of wrong overclock values
and resets the timeing values to safe settings. They where already at
these settings. :-/ Annoying, but no disaster.
BTW I use Matrox G400 as graphics card.

I'm using OS/2 Boot Manager and running OS/2 or Linux or Win98 or MS-DOS
on this machine. It's a K7-500 with sound, video capture and a few other
toys. To look for compatibility I check the lists and when in doubt go to
www.indelible-blue.com - they support the OS's with hardware and
software. to try new things I will often purchase from them.
I haven't gotten all the peripherals configured, yet in all the OS's,
probably never will. But if you have special needs, look to them as a
resource. Even hardware listed on some compatibility lists as good has
turned out to be OEM and non-functional when I get it.
Good luck.

Hi,
I am having a great deal of problem with my old harddrive that crashed
recently. It is a Seagate ST31220A IDE drive. Every minute it resets
itself that makes it imperatively to mount under Linux. The question is
where can I find a harddrive utility program to diagnose and fix such a
problem. Does this mean that I have to throw away this harddrive and
get a new one?
TIA.

I am currently using a HP Deskjet 610c and I am about to upgrade my printer
and I have seen 2 that interest me. The first is an Epson Stylus colour 860
and the second is an Epson Stylus Photo 870.
Is anybody using these printers with Linux and do they work OK? If not, can
anybody suggest an alternative?
Thanks in advance,
Phil.

SMARTMON at http://www.santools.com
However, it doesn't run under LINUX, so hopefully you have a
Windows-based PC you can temporarily plug the disk into.
(And don't expect smartmon to fix the problem, it can however, tell
you if you have a hardware problem which would mean that either you
throw the disk into the trash, or get a replacement from Seagate. --
on many drives seagate has a 5year warranty, provided you didn't buy
an OEM model that didn't come with support).

Hi,
I have a ViewSonic PF775 monitor and XFree86 3.3.6.
I configured my XF86Config so that the monitor would go off after 30
minutes of inactivity. This seemed to work OK for awhile. That is, after
30 minutes, my green light on the monitor would turn yellow and the
monitor would electronically be off.
However, at some point it became difficult to wake up the monitor. I
wiggle the mouse and I hear the monitor click and the light turns green.
No video. I hear another click a couple of seconds later, still a green
light, still no video. I fiddle with the mouse a bit and finally, after
20 seconds or so, the video finally appears.
I can't tell if this is an XFree86 problem or a ViewSonic problem.
Any educated opinions?
Thanks.

I think we're talking cross purposes here. I know what iso9660 is.
What I'm talking about is "floppy" type read/write across the OSs
using packet writing on CD-RW disks. From what I've seen on
the pages that talk about packet writing and Linux and UDF
file system, Linux cannot write the disks randomly as you can
in Windows(IOW, you have to write them using cdrecord as if
they were CDR.)
If anyone knows of random data read/write to CD-RW just
as done in Windows please let me know.

I had similar problems when I first installed the U2W on my system. I was
using a terminated cable. Solution was to cut the terminator off and
use the drive's termination (one drive only of course).
Does the bios correctly find and identify the drives (ctl-a panel on boot)?
Are the speeds and bus widths correct.
The U2W is nice if you get it working. Good luck.

Is anything else running from the same controller?
You might try it under another controller to figure
if it's the drive or the controller and then act accordingly.

What kind of hardware do you suggest I use to get them both networked ? Is
there any advantage of getting a fast card or should I just go cheap ?
Any particular recommended models ?

Oh dear... I do not know why you would have that kind of impression. I used
to run ATI Xpert 98 AGP 8MB.
I did not have any problem with it at all. It worked really well. Recently,
I have upgrade to ATI All in Wonder
128 AGP 16MB. All I need to do was download and install the driver... BUT,
again, I did not have any trouble with it after the installation. Even the
installation was pretty easy.

Below is a cut from my smb.conf file. I can send print jobs from a Win95 box
to the Samba server and see the print jobs in the queue as indicated in the
path - but they wont print to the printer. The printer prints from the test
part of Printtool, but won't print from emacs or from jobs submitted via
Samba. ????
I have used samples from the LDP Howto to ge tthis far, but I am missing
something. I also think I have redundant entries to make printing work - the
[printers] section should be all I need if I understand the Howto and the
O'Reilly Samba book, but the sample in the Howto show a [printers] section
and the [deskjet] seciton. I can only successfully Samba wise send files to
the queue using the [deskjet]

to be perhaps ISO9660, and it isn't.

As I stated later in my note, the format used by Adaptec is UDF, which
is in
