Hi again,
First of all, thanks for the suggestions. Unfortunately it wasn't the
perfect solution, tried all of that before..
I'll state the problem again.
1. Dmesg shows this:
RAM disk driver initialized: 16 RAM disks of 4096K size
PIIX4: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later

hda: SAMSUNG SV0432D, 4112MB w/480kB Cache, CHS=524/255/63, UDMA
hdc: ST51080A, 1033MB w/128kB Cache, CHS=2100/16/63
.. no matter what. BIOS settings always show "pio" (for _both_ drives),
while correctly set up in BIOS, and regardless of changed LBA, PIO or UDMA
settings. Furthermore, hdc is shown with its phycical parms and a force in
lilo.conf is needed but does not help solving the DMA problem.
2. hdparm -i /dev/hdc:
/dev/hdc:
Model=ST51080A, FwRev=14.14.01, SerialNo=HA393073
Config={ HardSect NotMFM HdSw>15uSec Fixed DTR>10Mbs }

BuffType=DualPortCache, BuffSize=128kB, MaxMultSect=32, MultSect=off
CurCHS=2100/16/63, CurSects=1287651360, LBA=yes, LBAsects=2116800
IORDY=yes, tPIO={min:180,w/IORDY:120}, tDMA={min:120,rec:120}
PIO modes: pio0 pio1 pio2 pio3 pio4
DMA modes: sdma0 sdma1 sdma2 *mdma0 mdma1 mdma2
Drive does not seem to be detected as PIO4, DMA2 disk. But it is.
3. hdparm -p /dev/hdc:
attempting to auto-tune PIO mode
HDIO_SET_PIO_MODE failed: function not implemented
Really? Hmm.. Should it be?
4. I can do hdparm -d1 -X34 /dev/hdc though, this is permitted.. This
improves the reading from about 2.56 to 4.43 MB/s. Hdparm with no options
show that all is still set up as default, while for /dev/hda it shows dma is
enabled and speed has been improved from about 4 to 14 MB/s with UDMA mode
2.
So, it looks like a bios problem to me, or..? It should be clear by now that
the disk is not properly recognized at all, its speed is far below normal
and it isn't comfortable working with :-)

Subject: bjc-4200 driver
Date: Sun, 08 Oct 2000 22:36:43 +0200
I'm running a Canon bjc-4200 printer with the bjc600 driver under Linux
(SuSE 6.3, Ghostscript v5.10). The results are o.k. for a resolution of
360 dpi.
In the hardware support database of SuSE I found for this printer also
the resolution of "720*360" mentioned. So I tried to run the driver with
720 dpi. But this results in an error. On a page only a quarter of the
page that should be printed is output (that means the original is
doubled in size).
Could you tell me whether the bjc600 driver supports resolutions higher
than 360 dpi at all. I know that in the "Details of Ghostscript output
devices" on the Ghostscript-Homepage
(http://www.cs.wisc.edu/~ghost/aladdin/doc/Devices.htm) only 90dpi,
180dpi and 360dpi are mentioned.
Many thanks,
Karl

Your status output looks OK. Notice that your tape is write-protected.
It is possible that your drive or tape is bad. I would get a new tape
if possible, make sure the write protect is off and the use tar or dd
to write a file and try and read it back. Not sure what else you can do.

SCSI support and IDE-SCSI support are not the same thing. There is a
detailed guide to this subject at
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html , and I suggest you read
it.
And RedHat 6.2 ships everything you need for IDE-SCSI support by
default; if you haven't built your own kernel yet, you probably don't
need to, just follow these steps:
0. Boot system with
linux hdX=ide-scsi
where X is the location of your IDE CD-RW (usually b, c, or d)
1. "modprobe ide-scsi"
2. "modprobe sg"
3. If those commands didn't generate any error messages, you should be
all set, but keep in mind that your CD will now be on /dev/scd0 instead
of /dev/hdX.
4. RTFM to find out how to make the series of commands in steps 0-2
automatic upon bootup--the HOWTO addresses this question, among many
others.

Cheers, got the driver. Don't suppose you you could tell me how I go about
installing the driver. As a Linux novice the installation
instructions included in the archive are very brief and not that clear.

Is it doubled in one direction only?
I've got a BJC-4400, running with the BJC-600 driver 360*360. It came
with a 'photo quality' cartridge which gives 720*360 with special Windoze
drivers, which probably affects the color balance as well.
One day I tried it with this cartridge, just to test whether a problem
was due to the cartridge or something else. The page got shrunk into
half in the direction of the shorter edge of A4. (Of course, since the
driver produced a 360*360 image).
So by changing the cartridge, the printer magically turns into a
720*360-capable one. Looks like if you get one of these photo-quality
cartridges, you'll get 720*360, but the colors may be distorted.
Now I'll have to try this myself :)

Some test results on BJC-4400:
With the photo cartridge and gs (v5.50) resolution set to 720x360, the
printout is otherwise correct (no scaling) but only half of the
page is printed.. i.e. the same half that is filled with the shrunk
image if 360x360 is used.

GT> http://gimp-print.sourceforge.net/
I've been trying for about 4 days to get that to ./configure Grant, but
its a no-go on my machine.
Using kgcc, present kernel 2.2.18pre15, removed gimp-1.0.4, and have
installed and removed the new gimp in both its default of /usr/local,
and tried it a couple of times in /usr too. Its currently in its
default install location of /usr/local.
Hand exec'ing "gimptool --version" reports 1.1.27 IIRC, but during the
configure, the next line after it says its checking gimptool for version
>1.0.0 and proceeds to print 'no', it exits on the next line instantly
saying the compiler isn't capable of compiling anything. That
/usr/local/bin/gimptool is the only one on the system.
And it spits out the correct path when queried with the pathlist
options, or at least they look good to me.
This is the same compiler that has built the last 2 kernels, and all the
newer gimp stuff, and the last gtoaster. Gimp seems to run ok, but then
I'm not a graphics whiz either.
The config.log tries to convince me I need to run ldconfig, but thats
been done after each gimp install, as has its config in /etc been
checked, it looks ok.
Ideas? As my only printer is a Stylus Pro, now getting ancient, I'd
like to try these new ones to see if they can do what epson claimed it
could do 6 years ago when I wrote a check for $531 and carried it out
the door.
Cheers, Gene

It depends on what you are adding. If it is supported it might find it by
itself. Sometimes you need to patch the Kernel, or rebuild the Kernel.
Sometimes you need to configure something in a file.
What do you need to add?

Well, this driver is rather unpolished at the moment; it's just a
quick hack against a slightly older jetprinter 7000 driver.
The lexmark7000linux-000924 tarball actually contains the two programs
already compiled. You should be able to follow the instructions in
the package to add it to printtool; just pretend that you have a 7000.
If you aren't using a printtool-based distribution, let us know and
we'll suggest whatever makes sense.

Hi, all!
Have a stupid question... is CDDA supposed to be real slow?
I have a generic 44x CD/ROM, and it reads data CDs fine...
I copied a CD to an image file just fine.
Whenever I try to read an audio CD, it takes "forever"...
perhaps 1/10 real-time to read a track. Is this normal?
/proc/ide/hdc/model says ATAPI 44X CDROM
/proc/ide/hdc/driver says ide-cdrom version 4.53
I've scanned the CD/DA pages, but nothing has "clicked" yet.
Any clues would be appreciated. Thanks!
