Thanks in advance.

Fix your newsreader; MIME crap isn't appreciated here.

hdparm -m16 -c1 -u1 /dev/hda

-d1 turns on DMA. -X34 turns on a specific DMA mode that your hardware
and/or kernel may not support well. -c1 turns on 32-bit I/O, and -u1
turns on the unmask interrupts feature. The above command gave me roughly
30% greater performance on my drives.

FWIW, kernel 2.3.99-pre3 with support for my IDE chipset enabled was 50%
faster than *that*. 17M/sec, which beats the hell out of 8 (no hdparm,
2.2.13) or 10 (2.2.13, hdparm cmd above enabled). I've found 2.3.99-pre3
nice and stable; YMMV and I think they're up to pre5 now.

# ln -sf /dev/scd0 /dev/cdrom (the first "SCSI" CD-ROM will keep its
real device name but be accessible under /dev/cdrom)
# ln -sf /dev/scd1 /dev/cdrom1 (the second "SCSI" CD-ROM will keep its

If I were you, I wouldn't mess with /dev/hdc and/or /dev/hdd. It's easy
enough to recreate them using mknod, but why bother? It's entirely
possible you'll get another IDE device in the future, one that doesn't
need SCSI emulation, and for that you mihgt as well keep hdc and hdd
around. HTH,

You need to make sure that you've setup everything as those in the HOWTO and you
modules can be loaded up correctly. Do a 'lsmod' and see if your USB modules are
available.. and when you're at it, check /var/log/messages too. Please read the
USB HOWTO which I think can be found in www.usb-linux.org. Here is some info
that you need to do:

1. Create a USB device for your mouse
   mknod /dev/usbmouse0 c 10 32

2. Change your XF86Config and use the new device instead

   Protocol "IMPS/2"
   Port "/dev/usbmouse0"

Good luck!

recompiled 2.2.13 (SUsE) 6.3 kernel to install the scsi card in the

Also the sysvipc because I read somewhere it is needed. Recompiled the

Subject: want recommendations for best video card
Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 00:26:16 GMT

I now find myself ready to select and buy parts for a new system. Most
everything I have picked out, or have the direction pretty much set.
One thing I have not chosen yet, and don't have a lot of info to make
that choice, is the video card. Here are my goals:

1. MUST work with SVGATextMode. I've read the list of cards that this
program works with and recently tried it on an NVidia RIVA 128, but
it failed. At first it failed due to a strange vendor code from the
PCI info. I hacked the source to add the apparent new code, but then
the program would segfault. I don't know enough about the hardware
to debug the program. So perhaps I am limited to other video cards
    like the Matrox Millennium G400.

2. Text mode dot clock to at least 80 MHz.

3. MUST work with latest version (or a version to be released within the
next month or two) of XFree86.

4. Graphics mode dot clock to at least 240 MHz.

5. AGP 4x or AGP Pro capability.

6. At least 16 MiB RAM. I will only consider standard RAM. I do not
intend to expand the RAM on the card. So an 8 MiB card that can be
expanded to 32 MiB will be considered for my purposes to be 8 MiB.

If and when Linux supports true virtual frame buffering (right now it is
psuedo-virtual in that the pixels a re-rendered upon VC change) where
each VC keeps its own graphical buffer and each VCFB can be memory mapped
independently by different programs, then I may be able to drop the
requirement for SVGATextMode support. The thing is, I need consistency
between VCs and PVFB doesn't do it (but I have not checked on the 2.3.X
progress to see if these problems have been addressed, yet).

Recommendations of value will be from people who have actually used the
recommended video card with SVGATextMode, which has a smaller set of
supported cards than does XFree86. Since I've encountered at least a
couple of video cards that should have worked that did not work, any
recommendations that are not from the basis of actual experience won't
be of much value.

FYI: the system choices I have made so far:

case: In-Win S500
motherboard: ASUS CUC2000
CPU: Intel FC-PGA P-III 800 MHz
RAM: initially 256 MiB
ether: (2x) Netgear FA-310TX PCI card
sound: Ensoniq 1371 PCI card

Subject: Techwell TW98 video capture chipset
Date: Mon, 17 Apr 2000 00:27:10 GMT

Does anyone else out there have a video card using the TW98 chaipset
for video capture.

I have a PowerColor TNT2-M64 card with video in and out and I want to
get the video capture working under Linux. I have contacted Techwell in
an attempt to get some info on developing a video for Linux driver.

I want to check if anyone else is already working on this, or who else
may be interested.

Steve
