Assuming you only have 1 tape drive, Linux should recognize it as
/dev/st0. There is a utility to do various stuff with/to a tape drive
called mt. Try "man mt" for more info. If "mt -f /dev/st0 status" shows
your drive, try doing this:
tar cvf /dev/rmt0 <some_small_non-system_directory>/*
If tar shows no errors and builds the archive, and you see & hear the
drive working, move the directory you tarred up (mv <s_s_n-s_d>
<s_s_n-s_d1>) and do
tar xvf /dev/rmt0
That should restore the tarred directory.
If mt doesn't find your drive, there's a hardware problem. Depending on
your SCSI adapter, is the drive properly recognized at boot? If you have
a wide adapter, do you have "wide negotiation" turned off for the tape
drive? My HP DAT will not come up if wide neg. is on. Also, HP has
instructions on their support page for running the DAT drive with
"PC-based Unix". Check the and make sure the drive is switched right.
If mt reports the drive OK, but tar doesn't work, then the appropriate
links probably don't exist in /dev. IIRC, all the device links *should
get installed with the mt package.
Good luck.

Okay, nevermind that part. I found out later that the message has to do
with pciutils and is only supported with newer kernels (since 2.1.8something).
The network card and video concern is still up for grabs though.

Unfortunately, I can't be of much help with the info you've given.
You need to cd to /usr/src/linux and as root type 'make xconfig'.
Under the 'Block devices' menu item make
no 'Include IDE/ATAPI Support'
yes SCSI Emulation Support
Under the SCSI Support section in the main menu choose
yes 'SCSI Support'
yes 'SCSI CDROM Support'
yes 'SCSI generic support'
Save and exit from the main menu. You now need to rebuild the
kernel. It is advised to look over the Kernel-HOWTO but here are the
main steps:
make dep : satisfy dependencies
make clean : remove old build
make bzImage : build the kernel
#Now make a backup copy of your old kernel and System Map
#and then from /usr/src/linux
cp System.map /boot/
cp arch/i386/boot/bzImage /boot/
#edit /etc/lilo and change the linux image section to point to
#bzImage; See the kernel howto on how to make lilo point to your
backup kernel in case something goes wrong. Here's my /etc/lilo.conf
boot=/dev/hda
map=/boot/map
install=/boot/boot.b
prompt
timeout=50
default=linux
image=/boot/bzImage
label=linux
initrd=/boot/initrd-2.2.12-20.img
read-only
root=/dev/hdb8
other=/dev/hda1
label=dos
Reboot the system. Go into a super user shell and type
uname -a
ls -l /boot/bzImage
If the time stamps match you have successfully rebuilt the kernel.
Look in /proc/scsi/scsi and make sure you cdrom and cdr are there and
then, as root, type
cdrecord -scanbus
This will produce output like the following. The SONY is my CD/RW
[root@video linux]# cdrecord -scanbus
Cdrecord release 1.8a29 Copyright (C) 1995-1999 Jrg Schilling
Using libscg version 'schily-0.1'
scsibus0:
0,0,0 0) '_NEC ' 'DV-5700A ' '1.05' Removable CD-ROM
0,1,0 1) 'SONY ' 'CD-RW CRX140E ' '1.0h' Removable CD-ROM
0,2,0 2) *
0,3,0 3) *
0,4,0 4) *
0,5,0 5) *
0,6,0 6) *
0,7,0 7) *
[root@video linux]#
Finally, you can test it. Make an iso image with
mkisofs -r -o cdfile.raw file1 file2 ....
cdrecord dev=0,1,0 -dummy cdfile.raw
where the three number pair is your cd recording device.
If you have problems after all of this, you need to follow up with
specific steps and error messages.

Alert:: don't just disable IDE/ATAPI support en masse. Your
boot partition is probably on an IDE partition. If you
disable IDE support totally, you won't be able to boot the
system at all. Caution is advised.
What you want to do here is to enable IDE DISK support, but
turn off IDE CDROM support. This prevents the kernel from
trying to set the CDROM up as an IDE device and allows it
to be set up under SCSI emulation, as John mentions.

It's strange.
When i had EIDE HP-7200 I had to add scsi-generic option.
Besides you may use /dev/scd0, /dev/scd1 to mount yours CD-ROMs, so You
don't need add any options in lilo.conf

No drivers needed for the Optra 40, since it is a true
PostScript printer AFAIK.

Check the SUSE site as it has a fairly good hardware support area. As
far as I can see, however, PCI Modems and Linux just don't mix. Most
appear to be Winmodems whether they say so or not! What's needed is a
driver for Winmodems as PCI is taking over from ISA. The only
alternative is to get an external modem that works with Linux. If you're
short of desk space, like me, then this may not be an option.

I have Mandrake 7. on my E700. I had to download a new autoboot.bat from
the Mandrake site as the install CD would boot and then hang at the second
stage ramdisk creation. The autoboot.bat fixed the problem, but you then
have to use the old text-based install instead of the new GUI install.
The main problem with this notebook is the modem is a winmodem and is not
supported in LINUX. If we could only get 3-Com who makes the modem for
Compaq to release the driver source!
If you don't need modem access or have an external or PCcard modem you can
use for access, the notebook runs Linux great!

Check out www.nvidia.com for linux drivers for the TNT/TNT2/TNT2 Ultra

OpenGL is a bit more complicated, and largely depends on what you're trying
to do. If you want to run serious apps I don't have a clue :o)
If you want to play games then don't bother for know - 3d accel under linux

Hi Robbie!
Thanks for your detailed account on how to make the itouch work with
remapped keys. I share your opinion about the great convenience of cordless
gadgets. Its great!!!
At the moment, I am not sure if I dare to follow your complicated
instructions of patching X11. There _must_ be a simpler way of doing this.
Or I just do hope so...
The cordless mouse coming with the itouch works very well for me with
'imwheel' (homepage at http://jcatki.dhs.org/imwheel/). Have you tried this
one? Of course this doesn't help to remap the keyboard keys. However, with
imwheel I don't experience any problems with the mouse (e.g. the jerky
behavior at the sides of the screens, which you describe).
Cheers,
Mike

With kernel 2.0.x you have no options, both SCSI or both IDE,
in case you have a CDR both SCSI (emulated, of course).
I used to have boot options in lilo.conf, so one was both IDE,
the other both SCSI.
This can be done adding something like:
/dev/hdb=ide-scsi
to the kernel options (check for the proper syntax) of one
boot option.
With kernel 2.2.x is it possible to mix up the devices,
so it is possible (with some limitation) to have CDROM IDE
and CDR SCSI (emulated).
This is done compiling everithing as module (IDE ATAPI and
IDE-SCSI, CDROM, SCSI, etc.) and setting up conf.modules in
the proper way (actually I don't remember details, but if you
want I can dig my configuration).
In my case I can have both SCSI, both IDE or CDROM (/dev/hdb)
IDE ATAPI and CDR (/dev/hdd) IDE SCSI, but I cannot have /dev/hdb
IDE SCSI and /dev/hdd IDE ATAPI, so the CDR must be on /dev/hdd.
Since this works and is enough for me I stopped investigations,
maybe someone knows how to solve the problem.
bye,
