You can buy a Maxtor packaged ATA-100 controller, which uses the Promise
chip.

I'd say the RAM isn't really PC133, or it is damaged. CAS2 doesn't help
much if it's CAS2 at 100MHz. Make sure your RAM is PC133 rated.

If he was talking about a single app that encapsulates the data, then
you have a point. I was thinking of a single application that is
delivers the data, where the data is stored as separate files,
records, whatever. You can certainly update records in a database
without restarting it. The key point is that the data is stored one
and only place. Browsers store a local copy, which complicates
updates.
The drawback to HTTP for this application is that when a page is
requested, a connection is opened, the page downloaded, and the
connection is then dropped. It's designed to be stateless, which is
good for what it was designed for. But in this application, you would
like to know what each screen is displaying. With HTTP, you have to
add another layer, with the server keeping track of what page was last
downloaded to which screen. It's easier if you use a protocol that
keeps the connection open, automatically locking the
page/screen/file/record. And an open connection simplifies displaying
dynamic data.
HTML is designed to put the browser in charge of the display. For the
web, that's good, as it lessens the load on the server. For a factory
environment, the load is finite, and there are advantages to using
dumb displays that are firmly in control of a central server. HTTP's
statelessness, local caching, and other features actually get in your
way for this application. The smarter the remote systems are, the
more complicated synchronizing updates can become. It's easier to
update one place than everywhere.
You can certainly use another SGML-derived markup language, such as
XML. The problem is not with the HTML so much as it is with HTTP.

I'm using myself some 10 Mbps NE2000 PCI-clones here. I have a network of
three PCs (two of which having the mentioned cards installed, the third has
a "real" ISA NE2000). The speed for network data transfers is actually
rather fast. I've never used 100 Mbps cards, though, because 90% of the
data that passes between my computers comes from our 56 kbps modem Internet
connection, and thus I would not see any difference when using 100 Mbps
cards.

Which database ?
We are investigating a product called Lifekeeper (www.steeleye.com)
which currently supports MySQL, Informix and Oracle and will also
support DB2 UDB in June.
Also supports other well-known (non-database) products such as Apache
and Sendmail.
The main issue about any database application and failover is that the
database (data and logs) needs to be on shared disk and support
transactions.

I had the same problem using a precompiled kernel.
I got a patch from http://people.freebsd.org/~gibbs/linux/
applied it to kernel 2.4.3 and now works fine -
card is an Adaptec AVA-2930LP (aic-7892) -
a rather cheap card sold here in Japan - although the
probing code claims that it is Ultra-160

This happens if you are running X as root. For some reasons,
screensaver will work for other users.
To stop screen blanking:
xset s noblank
Then you can control the screensaver:
xset s off
or
xset s on

My latest'n'greatest job has me programming a custon SBC running axis' etrax
100lx chip. http://developer.axis.com/doc/hardware/
It's cool being able to program an SBC with the gnu toolset and now it's even
better since they've incorporated a memory management unit on the chip. It
sucked having any process being able to clober themselves or any other process
on the machine or even the kernel. No more. The days of programming is an
environment as primative as windows are over.
The hardware dudes used some cad tools to take the chip, copy most of the
developers board but with relays, analog I/O, 128Ksram and a RTC backed up with
a 2F supercap, 8M flash for software and up to 64M flash for data for around
$200. Programming a SBC with tools like it was a vax. Shit! I'm in my
late thirties and remember working with systems where a 10M hard drive cost
$2500.
Anyway, are there any newsgroups for linux on single board computers, or is
this the right place? Now that 2.4 has been ported with full memory
management, there's little difference between programming this SBC and
programming a desktop, and nowadays there's little difference between
programinng a desktop and a supercomputer of the late 80's mid 90's).

The normal network should work over eth1, but every action (ping etc) uses

Still not good enough. They might be building a unit, and this might take
30, 40, 60 minutes, meanwhile their workorder is up and in the "in-process"
stage. Resetting the terminal can have a nasty effect on that. Further,
how exactly do you know when the terminals screen saver has kicked in with a
vt100 terminal?

And how do you update only that page, or rather the other pages without
effecting that one in a standalone app?

The point here is what happens when you need to update the APP, not the data
(though frequently they coincide).

Nonsense, you need only provide state information in the URL, or via a

..... CPU0<TO: 1339248,T1:892816,D:12,S:446420, C: 1339260>
CPU: 1. clocks: 1339260, slice: 446420
This is where the system dies. Looks like it cannot get the second CPU
going. I did include kernel-smp package when installing.
I know that my hardware works, Win2000Professional runs fine, uses
both CPU's.
Any help appreciated.
