I'd love to hear the answer to this one as well. I'm currently using the
parallel port version of the Sony SuperStation to backup my Windows systems,
and would love to just be able to move the device from my Windows machine to
my Linux machine to do backups.

I use a Actiontec PCI Master. It has documented and phone
manufacturer's support under Linux. I have found mine to be very
reliable. It runs about $85.00. Check out http://www.actiontec.com for

Many processors (including the P2 and Celeron) have their cache circuits
built-in to the CPU package. The amount of memory they can cache is
independant of the motherboard.
Some processors (like the K6-2) don't have built-in L2 cache. Systems
based on those processors have their limits set by the cache controller
chips on the motherboard.
As for the 810 chipset, it might be able to cache more than 512M.
Intel's web site probably has spec sheets that would tell you the chip's
actual capabilities. But the motherboard manufacturer might have chosen
to impose a lower limit. It might make the board design easier, or
reduce heat dissipation, or something else.
Finally, the limit might not really exist. If your borad has only two
DIMM sockets, and the largest DIMMs manufactured are 256M each - then
your limit is 512M. When 512M DIMMs come into existance, it might be
possible to use a pair of them on that motherboard, but the manufacturer
isn't going to make any such claims because they can't test such a
configuration until after the DIMMs become available.

OK, on my new PC I can change resolution by Ctrl/Alt/+ and Ctrl/Alt/- but
not so on this machine. What's the diff.?
This machine: RedHat 5.2 (?.?.?) with X11 running afterSTEP, Matrox

KDE, Matrox Mill. G400 32MB.

One thing I have found out in the last couple of days is that the BP6

Pitty .. I love Abit in general, but will stay away from BP6 because I

Sure I will, I will put my server under heavy stress for at least 1 week
non stop before puting it online (NonStop CGI's + DB Accesses +

Again, after reading a lot around and asking people, I think RAID10 will
be a better, safer and most important: "no downtime in case of

Its not so much a conspiracy against Linux. But this is for their
profit, I guess.
I have a Compaq Presario 5152, it's a year old, but it works just fine
with Linux. Debian/GNU linux, Mandrake Linux, Storm Linux, and
TurboLinux. Maybe they changed since my compaq was made, but you are

You can get XFree86 4.0 at http://xfree86.org. We're working on trying to get
ours to work with the Neomagic-Magicgraph 256AV video card. I tried installing
the binaries but didn't work. So, I'll have to download the source, compile,
and install...which I have not tried.

Here is what works for me:
Add the following lines to /etc/rc.d/rc.local:
insmod parport
insmod ppa
insmod lp
Then, add the following to the file /etc/fstab
/dev/sda4 mnt/zip msdos user,exe,dev,suid,rw,noauto 0 0
This line will allow you to mount and use factory-formatted Zip disks,
which are in MS-DOS format.
Finally, type:
mkdir /mnt/zip
This gives you the necessary mount point.
Don't feel bad, it took me two weeks and hours poring over Usenet and
web pages to locate the answer to using the parallel port Zip Drive
Good Luck!

Either try 'lptest >/dev/lp1' or check to see if the lp module is loaded (if
your kernel is modularized).
type 'lsmod' and see if "lp" is listed as a module.

I am a little annoyed that Compaq is no longer upgrading my bios of my
Compaq 5536. A pentium without PCI slots!!!
The bios cannot see harddisk larger than 8GB. I have to use a disk
overlay for my 11.5G harddisk which is killing the performance of my
computer.
I also have to wire it as a 2G harddisk because the Compaq would report
a error when booting up when there is none.
I am having lilo problem up and down because of this weird hard disk
configuration tor an obsolete bios.
My bios can enable or disable floppy disk access.

Just out of curiousity. Do you run Red Hat 6.1? If so, that is a known issue.
Did you try to run "printtool"? That won't work...
Try this:
add
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
to your
/etc/conf.modules file.
Then run /sbin/rmmod lp, and start printtool.
or follow the line below.
http://www.redhat.com/support/docs/gotchas/6.1/gotchas-6.1-6.html#ss6.19
Hope this helps.
Alex.

What you can change to depends on what mode lines are
available and specified in XF86Config. For example, I
used xf86config to create /etc/X11/XF86Config, and then
I added "1600x1200" and "1800X1440" to a modes line:
Subsection "Display"
Depth 16
Modes "1280x1024" "640x480" "800x600" "1024x768"
"1600x1200" "1800X1440"
ViewPort 0 0
EndSubsection
During startx, messages like following appear, as xinit
weeds out modes with frequencies outside the ranges I
use, HorizSync 30-90 and VertRefresh 50-100.
(--) GLINT: Mode "1800X1440" needs hsync freq of 104.52 kHz.
Deleted.
With only 2MB of vga memory, 1280x1024 at 8 bpp is probably
the best resolution you can get. Might be worth trying
1152x864 at 16 bpp also.
