I'm currently trying the following:
dump 0a /
It certainly goes further than before. I'll have to wait until Wednesday
when the new file server is delivered then I can have some big disks
filled up and see if the whole tape is used.

SCSI-II and 25 pins is a contradiction. 25 pins is an *illegal* bastard.

I have just installed an Adaptec 2930U scsi Adapter and the Yamaha
8424sz cdrw unit. The Adaptec was immediately seens and configured by
kudzu (RedHat 6.2). The info in /proc/scsi/scsi shows no devices.
(With or without a disk in the tray)
The scsi-id of the cdrw unit was set to 3. Parity is on and the block
size jumper was left as shipped.
Oh yeah, the whole thing works fine on the "other" operating system.
Any suggestions?

I have seen a 2Gb file size limit on my Sparc-linux (redhat 6.1). The
limit went away with the upgrade to 6.2. My friends tell me that Redhat
snuck in some of the filesystem patches which were still pending for the
2.2 kernel. Bless their souls.
Oh yeah, we verified that 6.2 fixed the probelm on Intel-linux RH6.2
also.

I've had some minor printer problems with
RH 6.1 and 6.2.
Look for
1) Interrupt conflicts with PNP or PCI devices
2) Check the dmesg output or /var/log/message file
for clues.
I use the lines
alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
options parport_pc io=0x378 irq=7 dma=3
in conf.modules .
Check your io device panel in the bios to see
what port/irq/dma your parallel port is on.
Good luck

Does the card see the cd-rw at all, i.e. do you see it in the card BIOS
during boot up?

What about termination?
> Oh yeah, the whole thing works fine on the "other" operating system.
OK, so it is probably set up correctly hardware wise.
First, be sure that it isn't seen by Linux. Look in dmesg right after
boot up, and check the section immediately following the scsi
adapter initialization. If it's seen there, it's just a matter
of setting up the device and mountpoints. If not, check, double-check,
and triple-check your connections and termination.
Oh, and a few goat sacrifices can't hurt either. ;)

hi. i thought downloading linux would be nice but now i even miss windows
(and i hate windows!). well i downloaded Phatlinux which seemed best for
me - everything worked smoothly - and i was very impressed with the look
and feel of linux but slowly i found out:
1. i have a Toshiba cdrom (x24) and a Hp 8250i cdrw. Linux only shows me
the hp drive and doesnt even know the Toshiba drive is there! i have not a
clue what to do.
2.worst - linux says i dont have a modem. i know Win-modems give problems
with linux. is there a way 4 me to solve this without buying a new modem?
3. I have an HP 670c deskjet that linux just cant find. It shows the
printers icon on the desktop but it does nothing and i cant print from any
program.
4. And last - how do i change the resolution cause the one im working with
now kills my eyes.
if anyone can answer me back i would be gratful. thanx and i hope i will
be able to enjoy linux one day.

My VIVO 90 is working, I have the following in conf.modules:
options sscape io=0xe80 irq=5 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330 mpu_irq=9
alias sound ad1848
pre-install sound insmod sound dmabuf=1
alias midi mpu401
options mpu401 io=0x330 irq=9
options ad1848 io=0x530 irq=5 dma=1 dma2=0
This was put there by sndconfig. You might need to check out the isapnp
program to get the irq etc settings correct.
My card works quite well except that occasionally my machine locks up
good and I have to power-cycle to get it back. Does the same thing under
Windows, so perhaps its just poor hardware.

Subject: Motorola V3400 Modem
Date: Mon, 19 Jun 2000 19:00:17 +0100
Hi,
Linux Distribution: Caldera Open Linux 2.2
I have recently decided that it was about time to actually put a modem onto
my computer as Linux is hellish without a modem, With all the running around
with discs and removable hard drives and then sorting out permissions after
copying from the windows drives.
I grabbed my dad's no longer used Motorola V3400 modem which was the first
modem I used.
It may only be a 28.8 but it's fast enough just now (ie until I can be
bothered getting a new external) I plugged it in and then seeing as I was
doing yet another Windows install. As usual windows decided it wasn't what
it really is and messed me about.
Now onto Linux, it's all plugged in told LISA that there was now a Hayes
Compatible modem plugged into COM 1 (You can tell I am still in Windows
land).
I don't have a phone line yet so I can't test it properly so I decided to
see how far it could get before moaning about something (the most likely
moan being that there is no dial tone) I set up a config. for KPPP and tried
to get the modem to respond. The lights flickered and then the little box in
the middle of the screen said something like Setting Speaker Volume at this
it did nothing else until it timed out.
Any ideas I can't find anything on the web and reading the book for the
modem hasn't helped much other than that I know it can dial from a modem
terminal window.
I have tried all of the other modem options and the same thing happens with
all of them.
Am I going to have to take a walk to the Computer Shop and make my bank
account shrink yet again?
I am also thinking about switching to Mandrake 7.?
Do you recommend the switch - How difficult will it be to set up my SB-Live
with it?
Thanks in advance
Fat Niall

Claiming that anything 'ran' on Win3x under 4M would be an overstatement.

CRAWL would be a more accurate description.

Also keep in mind that all a kiosk web browser on Linux would
need run is the browser itself and X. You don't need to load
a window manager or the rest of the desktop that would necesarily
be running under Windows or MacOS.
[deletia]
You might even be able to tweak the priority of Netscrape to get
it running faster on obsolete hardware that's not running anything
else.

First, edit /etc/lilo.conf to remove the entry for Windows, then run
/sbin/lilo. Now you should only be able to boot Linux.
Then remove the windows partition(s) on /dev/hda and replace with linux
partition(s). This is done with fdisk.
After that you will have to create new filesystems on your new
partitions with mke2fs.
Transferring data from an old directory to a new one is better done when
the file system isn't used. This could be done in single user mode or by
booting with some kind of rescue disc like toms root and boot disk. I
would really recomend toms root and boot, it is a very nice floppy.
>From toms root and boot:
mount the old partition and the new partition, copy the files and make
sure that your new partition will get mounted:
mkdir /mnt/old
mkdir /mnt/new
mount /dev/hdb1 /mnt/old
mount /dev/hda1 /mnt/new
cd /mnt/old/usr
tar -cf - * | (cd /mnt/new ; tar -xvf -)
mv /mnt/old/usr /mnt/old/usr.bkp
mkdir /mnt/old/usr
cd /mnt/old/etc
emacs fstab
When editing fstab, add a line something like this:
/dev/hda1 /usr ext2 defaults 1 1
Then when you reboot you should have your new /usr on /dev/hda1 and
your old /usr is left as a backup in /usr.bkp. You could remove the
backup directory when you are sure that everything works fine with your
new directory.
You might have to replace /dev/hda1 and /dev/hdb1 with whatever
partitions you have.
For more info, see
man fdisk
man mke2fs
man tar
man mount
man fstab
The Hard-Disk-Upgrade mini-HowTo is also a good source of information.

Let me be the first to say "Read The Fine Manual". Your Toshiba drive is
almost certainly /dev/hdc or /dev/hdd --try the following commands as
root with a data CD inserted into the Toshiba drive:
mkdir /mnt/cdrom2
mount /dev/hdX /mnt/cdrom2
replacing X with the appropriate letter. If you don't know the right
letter, check the logs from /var/log/boot.msg and you'll see something
like "hdc: TOSHIBA 24x CD-ROM, 128Kb CACHE".
http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/CD-Writing-HOWTO.html for info on making the
most of your CD-RW. cdrecord+mkisofs beat Acraptek Sleazy CD Cremator in

http://linmodems.org/ although if it's not a Lucent, you're more than
likely going to have to get a Real Modem. LoseModems are pieces of
junk; Real Modems work in all OSes and generally provide better
performance, stability, and blinkenlights.
>4. And last - how do i change the resolution cause the one im working with

Ctrl-Alt-(Keypad -) and Ctrl-Alt-(Keypad +) cycle through the list of
available resolutions. If they don't do anything, run XF86Setup as root
and pick out a few resolutions to use. 800x600 is a good medium ground,
but I really like 1024x768 even on a 15" monitor. 1152x840 is too much
unless you have a 17" or larger. Enjoy the "virtual screen" (you'll find
out; some people love it while others hate it.)

Hi,
I have a Mustek 12000SP scanner and it works flawless under W95. Now I
would like to use it under RH 6.1 as well. Does anyone know if there's a
driver or possibility at all to do so?
Thanks,
Huub

Assuming your modem is in good working order, it sounds like a software
problem. The online manual for this modem
http://www.motorola.com/MIMS/ISG/Products/V3400/manual/
makes it look like a standard Hayes-compatible external modem.
Give it a try in minicom--
