Yes I already did that and upgraded the kernel to 2.4.0-test1 at the moment my
USB on the motherboard works fine I just want to know if anyone has tried the
specific hub and if so what were the results.
Thanks anyway.

Like I said previously, right now I'm not running Debian. I used to use
it a lot, but right now the only Linux loaded up on my machines is
SuSE. I'm waiting for the next official Debian release to load on one
of my older machines only. Maybe when I buy my next workstation (and
get that damn DSL line) I will start using it again. But mostly it's
just a "fun to play with" system for me.

Subject: HP, Linux, and tape drives :-(
Date: Fri, 23 Jun 2000 18:01:16 +0000
Hi,
I've just spent much of today trying to find a tape backup device
which'll work with Linux, and in the process found out an awful lot about
things I'd rather not know.
Traipsing round the computer shops in Schillerstrae in Munich (there are
a lot of them :-), nobody seemed to want to sell me one. Yes, they sold,
for example, HP Colorado/Travan drives (or whatever they're called), and
no, they didn't know if they worked under Linux, and they didn't give a
damn, either: "Take it or leave it, sir!". One shop assured me that the
OnStream 15("30")Gb drive _wouldn't_ work with Linux.
Back home, hit the manufacturers' web sites. HP barely gave Linux a
mention, and then only for one of their high-end server level drives. So
I fired off an email to their support department asking:
> I want to buy a tape backup drive. The shop keepers are clueless about
> whether or not they will work under Linux. Do they? If so with what
> device driver? /dev/ht0 and /dev/nht0, perhaps? Please answer this
> question for _ALL_ your models of tape drive, so that I can choose :-)
The reply came back within the hour: "At this time we do not provide
software or drivers for the Linux operating system." and went on to
suggest I contact my "Linux manufacturer" for a list of supported drives.
Talk about patronizing non-answers! I wish he'd just said "Sorry, I don't
know".
Then I visited www.onstream.com. What a difference! Not only do they
positively recognise Linux, they even tell you about the kernal patch you
might (?) need, and direct you to bru's developers.
Later on I decided to scan comp.os.linux.hardware, and it would appear
that HP's drives are indeed routinely supported by /dev/ht0 and
/dev/nht0.
What is it about HP that they dislike Linux so much? I cannot believe
that their prime support people, even around lunch-time (in the USA) on a
Friday, can be so ignorant. Does HP really see no market in selling
drives to hordes of Linux users like me? Or is there some sort of
pressure being applied to HP by Microsoft not to promote Linux on desktop
machines? Or something?
Has anybody else had any more positive experience with HP wrt backup tape
drives?

I used www.metacrawler.com searching ac97+linux and found that there are
patches (2.2.13) for AC97. Experimental, may be unstable. Within a few
weeks 2.4 shall be released. This version could have full support for
the soundcard you have(i810 motherboard?).
All this could be done by yourself...

A friend has a P100 with 32MB... Runs a bit slow with Redhat 5.2, 6.0,
but better with Redhat 6.2. But its very stable, better than a PIII with
128MB Win98SE which crashes everyday... :-)

Mach 64, Matrox based chipsets are working very well in 2D. If you want
3D(QIII :-) you need a Voodoo(3dfx has stable and fast OpenGL-drivers
for Linux). But visit the sites of Diamond etc for more info.

I had exactly this problem. I got my answer from the PCMCIA-HOWTO (see
<http://pcmcia.sourceforge.org>). Basically, there's 2 steps:Edit
/etc/pcmcia/config so that the serial entry matches this:device
"serial_cs"class "serial" module "misc/serial", "serial_cs"and then edit
/etc/pcmcia/serial.opts to set the SERIAL_OPTS variable:SERIAL_OPTS="irq
0"This should work, but your connection will probably slow. To get
aroundthis, typecardctl configto find the IRQ for the modem. I used that
number (3, in my case)instead of 0 for the SERIAL_OPTS variable above, and
edited/etc/pcmcia/config.opts to explicitly exclude all IRQ's except 3. So
farit seems to be working fine...That should allow you to connect, making
sure the device in KPPP is setto /dev/modem.If that doesn't work, check the
HOWTO.Good luck!Psych.In article <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>,Samuel Bai

Hi group,
every time I try to intstall SuSE Linux 6.3 (Kernel 2.2.13) my keyboard
hangs after a period of time. That means it doesn't react on any keystroke.
YaST1 is running for shure (it didn't hang up) because after a time the
keyboard
works again. Installation with YaST2 works fine, I can install Linux. But
when
the system is running the keyboard hangs.
Once I started KDE and the keyboad hung again. I then moved the mouse a
little and it worked again. But this doesn't help during installation with
YaST1.
My keyboard is a Logitech Desktop Pro (cordless keyboard and mouse)
attached to the PS/2 ports of my ASUS K7V (KX133, BIOS 1005a).
The Desktop Pro works fine with Win98SE.
Who can help me solving this problem?
Thanks in advance
Dragan
