        From everything I have read, I seriously doubt this gives *any* benefit
whatsoever to the computer user. It is an anti-piracy scheme gone to
far, and I'd be no more for this sort of thing then I would be for a PSN
in my CPU. I, like some others who have posted in here (well
comp.os.linux.advocacy specifically...I know it is a cross post) several
threads up would not like to see this thing, and would rather use
products that do *not* support it for computers which I use.

        Yes, I've heard that MS isn't pushing it (they are set against it,
because of certain compatibility probs that can result...and a
programmers HD on their development system is not going to necessarily
be the same as a users)...but it rather sounds like it is the content
providers (people like the RIAA as an example) who would want this sorta
scheme over people's HDs.

Hi, all

I am using Xircom 56 modem and I have Corel Linux OS 1.2 installed on my
computer. The
modem works but very slow. Download speed never exceed 19200. The same modem
with the same ISP works fine up to 53k if I boot to win2k.
I noticed in Connection wizard that IRQ for modem's serial port is set to 0.
Does it mean that its not using IRQ at all?
I know that IRQ9 is not used by any hardware. How can I configure modem to
use that IRQ?

Thank you

I'm trying to setup this scsi pci card and I hope somebody correct me if
I'm going wrong somewhere.
These are the Kernel Options:
- SCSI SUPPORT
- SCSI GENERIC SUPPORT
- SCSI LOW LEVEL -> ADAPTEC AIC7XXX
Is this OK ? Do I have to add any parameter to lilo.conf ?

O.k., starting from scratch.

Is there a device I can add to my system that will allow me to insert
the CF cards ala a floppy or a CD or a ZIP disk? Preferably something
that would fit into a slot sized for a floppy drive (the one expansion
slot I have left)?

Would the IBM MicroDisk (340mb) be accessable this way?

System is a Dell Dimension XPS T700r running RH 6.1

what's most important is to buy a recent drive: higher density,
cooler, faster, more reliable. I'm always astounded when I find
drives in the 2-4G/platter generation in stores, since the current
generation is 20G/platter (4 or so generations newer!)

note that modern 20G/platter 5400rpm disks can EASILY outperform
older 7200rpm disks.

I personally prefer current IBM and Maxtor disks, but wouldn't
sneer at recent WD, Seagate and Quantums. I have had one good
experience with a recent Fujitsu, as well.

Subject: trying to get my mandrake box on a network - new to linux
Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 17:02:48 GMT

I'm running mandrake 7, I put a Linksys Etherfast 10/100 lan card in the
box, but I'm having trouble getting the drivers to work.

I'm very new to linux, and I'm stuck. Many of the commands described in
the faqs didn't work on my machine.
(http://linksys.com/support/support.asp?spid=25#wmodules) .

The readme for the card mentioned compiling some modules, I know where
the are, but I'm unsure of what to do with them.

Below is an extract from the linux readme file that came with the card:

Step 1: Mount the Linksys driver diskette with the following command;

 mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy

Change directories into the Linux directory on the diskette;

 cd /mnt/floppy/Linux

Step 2: Create a temp directory called netdrivers in /root;

 mkdir netdrivers

Step 3: Copy netdrivers.tgz on the floppy diskette to the new directory
you have just created;

 cp /mnt/floppy/netdrivers.tgz /root/netdrivers

Step 4: Decompress netdrivers.tgz to extract the source files;

 tar xzvf netdrivers.tgz

 The extracted files should now be located within the netdrivers
directory

Step 5: Compile the modules;

 make

 You now have compiled the modules successfully

Step 6: Install the modules;

 insmod pci-scan.o
 insmod tulip.o

Step 7: Issue the depmod command;

 depmod -a

Step 8: Initialize the eth0 adapter

 ifup eth0

Step 9: Run ifconfig to make sure that the eth0 interface is loaded;

 ifconfig

 You should see the loopback adapter (lo), and the Ethernet adapter
(eth0)

Step 10: To have the eth0 load everytime you boot into Linux you must
copy tulip.o, and pci-scan.o into the  following directories;

 /lib/modules/2.2.14-3/net

 /lib/modules/2.2.14-3BOOT/net

 /lib/modules/2.2.14smp/net

 If you are prompted to replace the current files, say YES

Step 11: You will have to add two lines of code to the following file;

 /etc/rc.modules

 Add the following;

 pci-scan.o
 tulip.o

 To write the changes to the file type the following;

 Shift+: wq (this is only true if they use vi, you not telling them to
use vi).

Step 12: Edit etc/modules.conf (if needed).

 vi etc/modules.conf

 Add the following to the begining of the file;

 alias eth0 tulip

 To write the changes to the file type the following;

 Shift+: wq

I got as far as step 5, but 'make' isn't doing anything, what should I
do?

Dear friends,

I am in need your support to place working my HP5100C parallel port scanner.
My linux distribution is: Redhat 7

I have just made the nodules epst.o and the others with sucess.
Then I did in /etc/rc,d/local:

insmod /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/parport.o
insmod /lib/modules/2.2.16-22/misc/parport-pc.o

After rebooting I can read on /var/log/messages

In this same folder I can see: /dev/scanner as a ling to /dev/sg0

....

As a regular user I did:

xsane

Result: there appeared a nice windows SANE with only the two virtual
scanners

=====================

Why did the SANE not detect my scanner?

What must I do to get the scanner working?

What text must I place in /etc/config.modules about the scanner?

Please, help me NOW!

Subject: Re: can't get adaptec 2100S and new linux kernel to work
Date: Sat, 30 Dec 2000 17:29:34 GMT

I got it to work with the patch in 2216diff.gz on the cd that came with the
card. I was using the kernel.diff patch that was in the same directory.
This patch seems to work fine with 2.2.18/17/16 unmodified kernels. Also I
found out that the cd that comes with it is bootable and it boots to linux
2.2.16 and runs X. Pretty cool...

So basically I installed rh 7.0 with the driver disk that adaptec e-mailed
me, added the object files, and did an initrd. That got the 2.2.16-22
kernel working. Then I just used the patch sources/2216diff.gz on the
install cd to patch 2.2.18 and compile in the dpt smartraid V support under
scsi low level drivers in the kernel.

Hi I'm trying to get an adaptec 2100s to work on 2.2.18 with no luck. I've
also tried it on 2.2.17 and 2.2.16. The only thing I can get it to work on
is 2.2.16-22 or whatever comes with RH 7.0. I got a driver disk with some
object files from adaptec, and they work fine with the red hat customized
kernel, but I can't get anything to work with the real unmodified kernel.
I've tried using the modules and making initrds on all 3 kernels, as well as
the patches that come with the CD (and then compiling in all the i2o stuff,
which I think is what I am supposed to do).

I've also tried the new 2.2.18 kernel with the i2o stuff and no mods. Can
anyone help? I am running out of ideas and I don't want to have to use the
modified kernel for redhat. I have some other stuff I usually compile into
the kernels and it never works right with the red hat kernels, so I always
use the kernels from ftp.kernel.org. Has anyone gotten this to work?
Thanks!

The rtl8139 driver is the correct one for this card.

Only ISA drivers accept the io=0x... and irq=... parameters.
PCI drivers can always reliably detect cards, find the I/O address and IRQ
from the PCI configuration.

Okay.. I think I have tried everything to get this sound card working in
Mandrake 7.0. I have edited my isapnp.conf file, rebuilt the kernel with
support for the right components (according to the AWE32/64 HOWTO), physically
moved the sound card to another location and probably a bunch of other stuff
that I already forgot that I did.

When I type "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf" I get an error that says the device is
busy. It says I can't use IRQ 5 because that is already used. But every where
I look, IRQ 5 is assigned to "soundblaster"

I did try changing the IRQ to 9, but then I got the error "/dev/dsp device does
not exist." Why am I getting this error, and how do I fix it?

Anyone who has set up a SB AWE64 in LM7.0 PLEASE HELP!!

I compiled a new kernel with scsi card support and everything looks good
when I do "demsg" or "cat /proc/scsi/scsi" because linux kernel can see
both, the scanner and the scsi card.
The thing is that I get no message when I do "scanimage -L" althogh I've
installed "sane" and "libsane".
a) Do I need an especic driver for this scanner?
b) What do I have to do appart from what I've done yet ? I mean do I
have to do something more? Where am I going wrong ?
c) I'VE READ SANE DOCUMENTATION, MAN SANE-SCSI .....SO PLEASE DON'T TELL

        The AIC-7880 is not a card, it is build into the motherboard
in the server. The ServeRaid card has the raid array and the CD-ROM
connected to it.

        I believe that I'm looking at a Linux configuration problem,
not a hardware problem. If I take my Linux CD out, the system boots
up with Novell 5 and the hardware operates normally, with no errors.
My problem is that once I get Linux booted, I do not have a driver to
get it so that it can find the CD-ROM connected to the ServeRaid
card....
