I doubt you'll need a driver, but the card will probably need
configuring before you can use its ports. I had this problem with my new
PCI parallel port card, and had to write to the vendor for specs so that
I could write a little kernel module! However, since this module's job
was only to configure the card, all I had to do was load it in rc.local
and then immediately unload it.
The 2.3 / 2.4 kernel has done a lot of work on IO ports; I suggest
contacting the Parallel Port developers and seeing which cards are
supported. (Of course, you could also go the other way - get a card and
then work on getting it supported in Linux.) If you're using Linux 2.2
then they should be able to tell you what you need to do to get your
card working.
Cheers,
Chris

I'm not sure exactly what you're indicating here. I assume you're
putting some variation of the lines above in your lilo.conf file.
The proper syntax for such a line would be
append="ether=11,0x7b80,eth0"
The important part is the
append=
Put this outside any section describing a boot image (I usually put
such things at the top of the file).

I've been running the Linux version of Quake2 for a while, using a serial
mouse. I just upgraded to another motherboard with a PS/2 mouse. I got
Linux and X11 to recognize the new mouse, but Quake freaks out - as if it's
getting a continuous stream of negative coordinates or something. What do
I need to change in the configuration (or drivers) to get Quake to work?
Thanks!

Subject: Hard Drive Problems with Redhat 6.2 - Bad Geometry?
Date: Sun, 25 Jun 2000 15:31:35 GMT
I just purchased two used Seagate ST15230WC SCA 4.2GB hard drives to
attach to my Linux box (using SCA to 50pin adapters). When I boot into
Redhat and run 'fdisk /dev/sdd' (or sde), it detects the drives, but
gives me an error saying that it cannot find "a valid DOS Partition
table, nor Sun or SGI disklabel". If I try to slice up the drive, it
has incorrect geometry for the drive that only adds up to about 31MBs.
My Adaptec 2940UW controller detects the drives at bootup, and the
SCSI bios utility reports the correct size for the drives.
Furthermore, if I boot from a dos diskette, and run dos FDISK, it
works fine. (Actually, it didn't originally, but after a flash bios
upgrade to the controller, it worked)
Any thoughs/ideas/ramblings would be appreciated.
Thanks,

Expect is a simple scripting language that could handle the job using
ssh. You tell it the command to execute ('ssh <hostname>') and what to
expect (ie "login" or "password"). Then tell it what to send when it
receives that prompt and so on. You can also specify timeout value so
that if the script does not get a prompt or string that it expects
with in the time you set, it will jump to the timeout clause.
Personally, I would do it with perl, although it would probably take
more scripting. With perl, you can use the 'open' command to open an
executable at a file descriptor. Then you can just print the commands
you want to send to the file descriptor. As for timeout in perl, often
what I will do is fork a child process that will send the commands and
then send a signal to the parent when it has completed. You can then
have the parent loop for whatever timeout value you want and if it
doesn't receive the signal by then, kill the child and continue. Check
out the Perl Cookbook for good examples and the Programming Perl book
for more details.

Sirs,
First of all, I am a relative newbie to Linux. I'm trying to install Redhat
Linux 6.2 on my machine. It has an ATI Rage 128 GL AGP graphics card and a
CTX 17" monitor.
During the setup screen where I select the graphics card (I selected ATI
Rage 128 (generic)) and then hit 'Test this configuration'. The test screen
displays correctly, but when I'm brought back to Linux setup screen, the
display is very jumbled.
Any suggestions?
Many thanks,

Subject: new asus p34vx board makes kernel think hda=hdb.. kernel panic :( plz help if

Hi all,
Well, my p2b board was causing no end of grief. I think there was
some sort of hardware fault, I was getting wierd intermittent
ethernet/cdrom problems.
So I broke down and bought a new board, an asus p3v4x, with a via
apollo pro133a chipset.
Anyway, I installed the new board, hooked everything back up, and
started it up.
After doing some bios config stuff so that the bios would recognize my
hardware, I restarted.
I get the lilo prompt, and choose my regular image.
The kernel boots, but then the wierdness starts. The following is an
excerpt from the end of the kernel messages:
hd1: C/H/S = 0/0/0 from BIOS ignored
hda: ASUS CD-S400, APAPI CDROM drive
hdb: WDC AC313000R, ATA DISK drive
hdc: no response (status = 0xa1), resetting drive
hdc: no response (status = 0xa1)
hdd: no response (status = 0xa1), resetting drive
hdd: no response (status = 0xa1)

hdb: WDC AC313000R, 12416MB w/512kB Cache, CHS=25228/16/63, UDMA
hda: ATAPI 40X CD-ROM drive, 128 kB Cache
.
. [floppy drive stuff]
.
Partition check:
hdb: [PTBL] [1582/255/63] hdb1 hdb2 < hdb5 . . . hdb14 >
cdrom: open failed
VFS: Cannot open root device 03:09
Kernel panic: VFS : Unable to mount root fs on 03:09
Well, there you have it. The kernel thinks hda=hdb.
The hard disk is set up as primary slave, and the cdrom is set up as
primary master. On first glance, you'd think the answer would be to
switch slave/master. However, the bios won't detect the hdd if I set
it as the master. I don't know why.
I had my old p2b board configured the same way, disk = slave and cdrom
= master, without any troubles.
I'm also concerned about the
hdc: no response (status = 0xa1), resetting drive
hdc: no response (status = 0xa1)
messages. Especially because I setup the bios such that the bios only
knows/looks for the primary master/slave, and no secondary bus drives.
I guess, if I booted my system with a floppy, I could mount /dev/hdb9
(the root partition), re-do /etc/lilo so that it points to
/dev/hdb(n), and then rerun lilo.
I'd also have to remake the /dev/cdrom link to point to /dev/hda,
rather than /dev/hdb, and rewrite /etc/fstab to reflect the change
from hda to hdb.
If I go this route, are there any other configuration changes I need
to make?
I remember reading/hearing somewhere that there is a lilo option you
can add on the boot: prompt to switch the order of the drives.
Perhaps I'm wrong, but I seem to recall such a thing. Of course, now
that I need it, I can't find any reference to it.
I suspect that perhaps the problems have something to do with the via
apollo chipset, perhaps it works/acts/thinks differently than the
intel 440bx chipset that is on the p2b board.
Any ideas?
Many thanks in advance for any responses.

This doesn't answer the real question, but for performance reasons I
would put the CDROM as master on 2nd channel. As to the rest, I would
only guess that the BIOS is confusing the kernel.

Removing the 3C509 driver from the kernel and making it a loadable

Halejleuah, looks like Deja finally fixed the posting problem with line
wraps. As for RS6K boxes, I think that most of the current ones are at
least partly supported. I think that they're still using PPC chips,
although they aren't branded as such. I'm by NO means an expert on
that, but you should be able to call IBM and ask.

I don't know what an ARO-1130SA is, but assuming that you're using a
hardware RAID controller that's supported in the kernel, or which there
are patches to support, then it can do anything you want. RAID
controllers will make the RAID arrays just show up as SCSI disks to
Linux. I've got a DPT smartRAID V, running a 3 disk RAID5, and it works
wonderfully (and screams, to boot). I've also got a software RAID 1
using the RAID drivers for the kernel, and it's worked wonderfully. I
even had a real disk failure last week, although I haven't been able to
find a replacement disk yet, the machine is still up and running nicely.
