Hey gang:

I haven't bought or built a PC since the early Pentium days (been spending
my time playing with SUN and HP server equipment). Anyway, I find that
it's about time for me to build a new development/test system to use with
NT and Linux. To that end, I've tried to identify what I believe will make
a good system and choose parts that are compatible.

I'm interested in thougts that other readers might have about my chosen
configuration, and whether my expected costs for the parts seem reasonable:

Tyan SMP P3 Tiger 133 S1834 motherboard 160
ATX 6 drive bay case with 250W power supply 30
PS2 keyboard with tactile response 30
PS2 3 button mouse 10
2 each 256MB 72 bit PC/100 SDRAM 600
2 each 600mhz P3 processors (slot 1 type SECC2) 440
2 each Maxtor EIDE 18GB fixed disk 220
IDE cd-rom reader/burner 200
Adaptec 2940UW SCSI card 175
2X AGP graphics card (S3 chipset with 8MB) 300
20 inch Vision Master 1600x1200 monitor 1000
100mb PCI network card 30
                                                                        ---------
                                                                             3195

I'm wondering whether I can gather the needed parts within the price range
I've listed and I need to make sure that the parts I've listed are all
compatible. Is there anything important that I've forgotten to list?

Is anyone running a similar configuration and can you give me any idea
about performance or noted problems?

I can be reached by posting a followup, or email me at
[EMAIL PROTECTED] where the digits and the word (german) are
removed from the domain name. The (O) is a letter, not a digit...

Thanks

Linux can and will use a 5th serial port if one's really there. More than
likely, there isn't a real serial port there, though. Check the list at
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html and make sure that your modem
isn't on the blacklist there. Most computers these days ship with
LoseModems installed instead of Real Modems. For the easiest and best
modem experience with Linux, buy a Real Modem that's external and plugs
into the serial port.

If by some lucky chance you have a Real Modem that's internal, take a look
at http://linuxdoc.org/HOWTO/Modem-HOWTO.html

You don't say whether you're looking for IDE or SCSI. I don't know
about IDE drives or HP drives in particular, but if you're looking for a
SCSI drive, as long as you have a working SCSI controller, any drive
should work. I have a SCSI Seagate Travan NS-20 and it works well.

0x380 and IRQ 9--works great, assuming IRQ 9 is free.

You don't even need the DOS setup program!

In any case, if you want NumLock to be on at boot-time, edit
/usr/src/linux/drivers/char/keyboard.c as follows: change the
section

  #ifndef KBD_DEFLEDS
   .
   .
   .
  #define KBD_DEFLEDS 0

so that the #define statement reads

  #define KBD_DEFLEDS 2

and recompile and install the kernel.

(For the record, defining KBD_DEFLEDS as 1 turns on scroll-lock and
defining it as 4 turns on Caps Lock, although why anyone at all
would want Caps Lock or Scroll Lock on at boot time escapes me.)

Does this setting survive X startup?

It's not just XF86, I think the dual-head mode has to be set up and
compiled in the kernel. I know that as of 2.2.16, it's still experimental.

I hope your doing this as a learning experience or for fun. According to
the RedHat site, Linux has a practical lower limit of a couple hundred
thousand bytes of RAM, which is too much for some embedded applications.
They sell support for a freely downloadable embedded OS with networking call
ECOS. You might want to take a look at it before you try and turn Linux
into an embedded OS.

I don't know much about dual-cpu-systems, but I can only recommend:
-) the Adaptec 29160LVD/SCSI controller card (you can use UW-discs with
it too) - up to 160MB/s transfer rate
-) a better graphics card than yours, if you want to run any of the
current action- or simulation-games with good performance - for example
Riva TNT2 or GeForce-chipset.

Subject: Compaq Presario 1200XL soundboard/modem problems
Date: 25 Jun 2000 21:23:00 GMT

I bought a Compaq Presario 1200XL 119 notebook
a couple of weeks ago. I wanted to install Corel
Linux, since it's my favorite distribution, but the
installer does not handle my graphics adapter well. :-(
I went to the Corel website, registered my Corel
software and left a support question. They NEVER
answered my question -- never acknowledged that I'd
left it. I'm told that this is typical and that
Corel is known for lousy support. Wish I'd known. :-(

I called Compaq support, to ask what type of devices
are in this notebook and what distribution of Linux was
recommended. The support person was aghast that I'd
wiped out Win98 and was planning to install Linux on it. ;-)
He told me he didn't know what the video adpater is (likewise
modem & sound) and that he couldn't support me, since I was
going to run Linux on it and that's NOT a supported configuration.
So much for Compaq support..... ;-)

So, although I wanted a debian kernel, I've gone on to
install SuSE 6.4 on it and it installed beautifully, but
the sound board and modem are not recognized.

The built in sound board is a:
VIA Technologies, Inc. -- VT82Cxxx -- Apollo.

I need an object module, *.o file, for this soundboard,
so that I can update the /etc/modules.conf file.
Any suggestions about where to find one and how to configure
this particular model?

The built in modem is a: Lucent 56kb WinModem.

I'm told modem help can be found at
http://www.linmodems.org/ has the answer.
It's binary-only; provided, but unsupported by Lucent.
http://www.linmodems.org/linux568.zip

Anyone have any experience with this?

I'd dump the Maxtor drives in favor of the IBM 75GXP. The
45Gbyte/7200RPM 75GXP can be had for about $260. There are 15,30,45,60
and 75Gbyte drives in the family.

Hello,

I have got a winmodem on my laptop. I have downloaded the driver
"ltmodem"
and I can get it to dial out with the tool that comes with it. However,
I do not know
how to configure PPP or get it to connect to the internet. Since this is
a WINMODEM,
how do I create a /dev/modem device for this and how do I configure PPP.

Many Thanks.

2Gb fat - logical
rest is ext2 on logical drive.
Linux kernel lives above 1024 cylinders. 528Mb fat has ntloader and
msdos 6.2 on it. The whole thing worked fine in a P-233 TX m/b.

I moved to recently States and bought an HP Vectra PPro-200 -- for
now. Its BIOS (latest available from hp) has only 2 ide translation
settings: "standard" and "extended". According to fdisk, "extended"
reports 1027 cylinders on the drive (bug?).

DOS won't boot: ms-dos just hangs, dr-dos dies with divide by zero.
Partition Magic won't work either. Lilo hangs at LI when started
from NT loader. Anyone can tell me what the story is?

It's not important -- I can boot linux from floppy and the box came
with winmodem so I won't use linux much now; I don't really need that
couple of games that won't run under ntvdm either, so I can live
without dos. Pity I can't use PM to move the kernel above 1024 cyl...

I'm just curious -- what's wrong with the damn thing that kills PM
and dos. 1027 cylinders? Just how LBA and Large translation modes found
in decent BIOS are supposed to work (I know they remap cylinders to
heads; what's the difference between large and lba anyway)?

TIA
Dima
