Huh? Is it just me, or can you save some 175 bucks here? 8-)

Subject: Annoying Key Combination for Shutting Down my Computer
Date: Mon, 26 Jun 2000 00:02:56 +0100
Hi, there is a really annoying key combination that can be set in the bios
that will turn off the power supply on my computer, it would be fine if it
was the Turbo-Power keys on my key board but it's not it's
Ctrl-Alt-Backspace
The computer dual boots with Win 95 and when ever Win 95 crashes this is
usually the easiest way to turn the thing off, is there any way I can get
Linux to disable this function but still keep it active for when I really
need to kill the thing. Or do I just have to turn it off in the bios and try
and get at the power button?
Thanks in advance

Large and LBA differ mainly in the number of C/H/S translated heads they
support. Large poops out at 64 heads (2G), while LBA provides C/H/S
mappings for up to 255 heads (8G) or possibly more. Switching translation
modes without repartitioning is somewhat risky, and anything
BIOS-dependent like DOS or NTLDR or LILO will suffer full confusion when
the translation mode the BIOS uses switches.
I *think* that you could boot Linux from a floppy, then re-run LILO with
boot=/dev/hda and then you could boot Linux from the hard drive... that
may not be what you want though.

This is the DAC960 bios message and it makes complete sense as it hasn't
detected
any drives.

I've had just the reverse problem. I'm currently using a Mylex Acceleraid
250 setup as RAID 5 with RH 6.2 and It's working just fine, the difference is
that I'm booting off the logical RAID device and the devices on the secondary
controller are my swap drive, CDRom & 2 tape drives. In order to do this, I
had to disable the bios on the secondary (on board) Adaptec controller.
I have a suggestion. Go into the bios on the Mylex card and turn off it's
ability to boot or just turn off the bios. On most SCSI cards the bios is
just used to boot and doesn't affect the actual operaion.
Best

Fair enough opinion. I'd prefer to have two smaller drives than one large
one, for redundancy and the ability to do stuff like striping, etc. What
are the cost ranges for the 15 and 30GB drives in this family? UDMA
access?

I am creating multi-session CD's using mkisofs and cdrecord. (Joliet and
Rockridge extensions)
I can see the sessions on windows 98 and redhat 6.0
But the CD's are not visible to Windows 95 or redhat 5.1. I thought this
might be to do with "unclosed" sessions.
However I dont know why this happens (the cdrecord homepage says
that the session is "closed" if the disk is "fixated" at the end of each
session, which it certainly is each
time I do a multi-session burn).
I'm guessing (from the information below) that the disk is some sense
open - and this is
causing Windows95/RH5.1 to spit the dummy.
This option makes only sense with a CD that contains at
least one closed session and is appendable (not finally closed yet)
So the questions are
(1) Whats wrong?
(2) How do I "finally" close a multi-session CD.
Thanks,
Tony

Subject: Modems

Hi. I currently have an "unnamed" modem, seems to be some sort of 56K
Rockwell. The problem is connecting to one of my ISPs - it just makes weird
noises (you can hear the negotiating noises over and over, until some time
it decides to work and go on and connect, or it makes a very loud hiss until
it times out), although occasionally it does connect first time. This only
happens with one of my ISPs, but it's the one I need to use a lot. Could it
be that my modem's not properly compatible with their modems? If so, is
there a way I can get a firmware patch (it is flashable) without knowing the
manufacturer/model, or can I find these out?
Otherwise, could someone recommend a good, internal, pure-hardware ISA modem
that will work with Linux? I'm using my Linux box as a router atm, and
that's the way I'd like to keep it, but so far I can only find Winmodems >:(
Thanks

In my experience, the ALSA drivers (http://www.alsa-project.org) work
well, although they're a bit of a pain to install.

This driver does work, at least with the Mandrake 7.0 installation I've
got.

adaptec made a 4 port card. it was like $600 and not sure if it used one irq or
more.

Adaptec made special server cards with 4 ethernet ports. The one I looked at was
$600. no idea if it used one irq. but take a look at adaptec, and yes they make
things other than SCSI. That surprised me as well ;-)

I tried the OSS (4Front) drivers. Unfortunately, they locked up the
computer about 1/3 of the time. (This was on a Compaq Presario
1200XL-106, which presumably uses the same sound chipset as the
1200XL-119 used by the original poster.) The problem was no doubt due
to the fairly new status of the specific chipset driver, and/or
interactions with other components, not to the OSS drivers generally.
It might also have been fixed by now, but I received no reply when I
reported the problem to OSS. The ALSA driver works well for me, aside
from the occasional audio glitch (which I get in Windows, too -- it
seems it's just a cruddy sound chipset).

Is anyone using this under Linux? He is going to be running Red Hat 6.2.
How was the install, or anything special needed to get it running?

Just wanted to drop a quick thanks to those that helped me with my Epson

I'm using a brand new Sound Blaster PCI 512 in my linux box with kernel
2.2.16 and the emu10k1 driver off soundblaster's open source site. When
I play .wav or .au audio, there's a quick boom at the beginning. MP3's
work fine however. This is pretty annoying; any ideas on what causes it
and how to fix it? I've tried fooling around with the mixer controls
with no success. Thanks.
