Hi , i am trying to configure my hsp modem from pctel but
with no luck so far.
Could anyone who has succeeded in this please tell me
the following:
- In which directory the compiled files (pctel.o , ptserial.a , etc)
are stored ?
- All the names of these files ?
- Any specific entries regarding this in the files
/etc/modules.conf and /lib/modules/modules.dep ?
Anything other i should do to get my modem working ?
Help is very much appreciated.
regards,
Raaf

I am a Linux Newbie that has successfully installed COLOS, Star Office and
WordPerfect. I did this in spite of a crappy graphics card (Sis 6326), it
was all basically just good luck because I still don't know much about
Linux. I should have been content. I decided to change the refresh rate from
65.?? Mhz to 75.?? Mhz. Damn, I should have left well alone because now I
can't boot into COLOS KDE. I get the message that fsck failed and that I
should repair this manually and reboot. I don't know how to do this. Any
help will be greatly appreciated.
Also if anyone has managed to configure an AOpen FM56-PM modem, please tell
me how.
Thanks in Advance

Got good/bad news for you. My understanding is that the early ones work (mine
is an early one, all I had to do after install was run sndconfig) the newer
ones don't work at all (from what I have read). I believe the old ones used a
different chip than the new ones (don't remember the exact number of the chip
however the old ones ended in 70, and the newones end in 71)

Not an AMD problem, I run a K6-III/450 at 500 and never have a compile problem,
since it works at 66mhz (pentium 133) I would suggest that it could be the RAM
having trouble with 100mhz, if it is a VIA based board try running the RAM at
66mhz and see if this fixes the problem. AMD made versions of the 300 that
were designed for the 66mhz speed, however all chips over this were designed
for 100 (except for 333, and 380 they were 95mhz) but all will still run
at 66mhz (up to 400mhz because the highest multiplier is 6x, 2x=6x)

Mine's an ES1371 chip and it works great after running
sndconfig as root. Apparently, the ES1370 and ES1371 chip
versions of this card are dead simple to configure. There
are newer ones out, though, with an ES1486 chip or something
like that. I've heard people have got them running with ALSA
or OSS drivers. You might want to search the archives as
this question is one of the most frequently asked, and
answered, sound questions I've seen in these groups. It
would help if you looked at your card to see if the chip is
identified on there. Mine wasn't but it was detected by
sndconfig as the 1371.

It's pretty much automatic. If you have recompiled your kernel are you
sure you selected the correct module? Check /lib/modules/scsi. There
should be a file there named aic7xxx.o. This is the module for your
controller. If that is located there double check your
/var/log/messages and see what it tells you.

I have found that people with the es1370 tend to have no problem at all. The
ones with es1371 tend to have trouble. My PCI128 was an early one and is
es1370 and has always worked perfectly. Not trying to dissuade you just
letting you know that if it is an es1371 you may not be able to get it working.

Maybe the underlying screensaver program is not installed?
Or not on your path? You might also want to check the
configuration of your windowing manager, whatever it
happens to be (KDE, fvwm2, twm, ...)
Can you run xlock, or xscreensaver from the command line
in a terminal window?

I never tried running xlock or xscreensaver from the command line in a

Will doing that initiate the xscreensaver, xlock install?

I don't know if you would consider this...
I use Red Har 6.1 right now.
XFree86-3.3.5-3
XFCom-r128-glibc2.1-1.0.0-1.i386.rpm (compiled under Red Hat 6.1) driver.
I did not have any problem when I was using RH 6.0, and do not have any
problem with RH 6.1 right now.
I have heard many ppl have problem use 3.3.6 with this card and that is
the main reason why I am still using 3.3.5.
I got the driver from here.

It's this same as the one someone have point out already.
I can send you my XF86Config file if you think that would help.

How in the world does one do this in Linux?
I just installed Redhat 5.2, and it seems to be fine....I have the gui up

But how do I create icons for my application, and then place them on my

In addition to SCSI emulation for my CD burner, I have an Adaptec AVA-1502
installed for my scanner. Everything coexists just fine...the 1502 shows up
as SCSI bus 0 and IDE SCSI emulation shows up as SCSI bus 1. I've also had

David,
I'm not sure about RH5.2 but on my RH6.1 installation,
there's a folder on the desktop called 'Templates'. You only
need copy the appropriate icon from that folder to your
desktop and edit the settings under 'Properties' (right
click the mouse on it). You can change the icon on the last
tab.

All you need to do is make sure your kernel has tape support compiled in, and
then you just need to add the tape drive to your scsi chain, /dev/nst0 is the
first tape drive (no rewind moe), and /dev/nst1 is the second. If you want the
tape drive to rewind after use, then use /dev/st0 and /dev/st1 instead. By
default, tape block sizes are fixed at 512 bytes, unless you use the "mt"
command to change the defaults.
