Thanks for the advice, unfortunately the internal systems dept that built my
machine have defined the following partitions;

1 contains a dos partition approx 300Mb
2 contains a partiton for win98 that is approx 2Gb
3 contains an NT4.0 partition that is approx 1.5Gb
4 contains a extended partition that has the same start/ stop and size as
partition.

???????????????

Does this mean that I can't extend it further as the NT partition comes after
and I can't have more than one extended partition. Can I move my NT partition
to the end of the disk and resize my win98 partition - am I still screwed?
Will I ever get Linux loaded???

Thanks to all, I'm still not out of the woods - please help,

Cheers,

David

Is anyone out there running a Celeron 400 under OS/2? The Celeron's benchmarks
put it in line with a PII400 when it comes to Win98, but it seems to implode back to
the level of a PII300 under NT (due to limited cache ram and slow FSB). Am I right
in guessing that this lack of performance will also hold true under other serious
multitaskers?

Would I be better off buying a PII350? My needs are pretty much split 50/50
between FP and integer performance.

Yes, but a better way (so you don't have to deal with that each time) is to use the
/dev/gpmdata device that will be created by invoking gpm with the "-R" option. you
can link your mouse to it (ln -s /dev/gpmdata /dev/mouse). Here is what man gpm says:

-R Causes gpm to act as a repeater: any mouse data
received while in graphic mode will be produced on
the fifo /dev/gpmdata in mouse-system protocol.
This means that you can configure the X server to
use that fifo as a mouse device. This option is
useful for bus-mouse owners to override the single-
open limitation. It is also an easy way to manage
those stupid dual-mode mice which force you to keep
the middle button down while changing video mode.
The option is forced on by the -M option.

The advantage here is when you go back to a text-console, you still have gpm running...
Enjoy!

Subject: Help: RH5.2 install can't find AHA1505 (aka 152x)
Date: Sat, 16 Jan 1999 01:59:15 -0500

I am trying to install RH5.2 on a 486 via a SCSI
CDROM attached to a Adaptec 1505 ISA card
(use AIC6360 chip). Under plain dos, the system
sees the card and the CDROm without problem
(I used ASPI2DOS.SYS driver).

I am having trouble for the RH installation to recongnize
the card. The card is configured to use I/O=340h,
IRQ=11 (default setting). During installation, I choosed
AH152x for SCSI card. But the "auto probe" failed to
find any card. So I am trying to supplied parameter
for the module detection. I entered: 340,11,7,1
and system indicated "scanning aha152x bus ..."
and never complete the process.

Could someone help me to solve this problem?

Thanks in advance!

Subject: HiVal Multimedia kit? Or any other
Date: 15 Jan 1999 00:15:07 -0500

I just put a new motherboard on my Linux box, and I'd like to add sound
to the system. Unfortunately I'm out of slots, so I'm considering
removing the SCSI card (which means losing the CDROM, and one thing I
want to do is be able to play CD's) and putting in a sound card.

One of the cdrom-sound card multimedia kits sounds like the way to go
here, value-wise. Is there a better idea that I'm missing?

I'm seeing some good deals on the HiVal kit, with the WAVE 32 card.
Does anyone know anything about this system? I can't find any
reference to it anywhere. Do they OEM the card from elsewhere?

Or am I better off just getting the SoundBlaster AWE64 system? It's
more money, but it sounds like much less hassle.

It's been a long time since I dealt with sound under Linux, so any
pointers are appreciated. Also, where's the list of supported cards
these days? Are all the cards on the OSS list supported under Linux,
or are some only supported with the commercial version?

TIA

Subject: Unknown interrupt - irq timeout
Date: Fri, 15 Jan 1999 07:03:01 GMT

I recently added more RAM and a new drive to my 486.

The new drive first started having problems with its DOS (6.22) partition,
producing directory structure errors for scandisk on a regular basis.
When I took it back to the shop to try to fix this (and add a further 16M RAM)
something else happened. Now linux hangs on boot up.

The errors seem to be referring to the old drive, rather than the new one
(/dev/hda), but what is ide0? These errors occur even when the new drive is
disconnected. The old drive is on /hda and the new on /hdb.
DOS boots fine on /hda1 and can see its partition on the new drive, hdb1 fine.

The error messages look something like this (transcribed from screen, because
of course it can't write anything to the disk)

Unkown interrupt
hda irq timeout: status 0x58 {DriveReady SeekComplete DataRequest}
ide0: reset: success
had irq timeout: status 0x50 {DriveReady SeekComplete}

Then some error I didn't write down correctly about dev03:03

Any thoughts on recovering from this problem?

What tools are there to check out what's happening with IRQs?
