Start of by looking at tar, afio, cpio, and dump, both man pages and
documentation (probably under /usr/doc/ on your system).

For basics, to create a tar archive on tape:

    tar cvf mydir /dev/tape

Note that /dev/tape probably doesn't exist on your system. You'd create it
as a symlink to your tape device. In my case, /dev/tape -> /dev/nst0, as I
have a SCSI DAT drive. YMMV.

I'd also strongly recommend the book "Running Linux", published by
O'Reilly, now in its third edition. The Unix admin books by Nemeth and
Frisch are also good. RTFM, as they say. It helps.

I'm considering buying a new DeskJet for my Linux computer, and I think I
may have found the perfect one - the HP DeskJet 1220C/PS. It's a color
inkjet with PostScript support. That immediately makes me think, no Linux
troubles. My question is, does anyone know that it does/doesn't work,
because of any strange HP-ness or anything else? Information about the
printer is here:

This is my situation:

I have a parallel port ZIP circa 1996 that I have been using for two years
on my debian box (now running slink with 2.2.14 kernel). I have also
successfully used the drive on a FreeBSD 3.5 and 4.0 box.

It will not work on RH 6.2, and I dumbfounded as to why.

I am using RH6.2 with a stock 2.2.16smp kernel. I load the parport and ppa
modules as needed. The systems then sees the drive with no problem, but as
you can see from the dmesg dump below, cannot read the disk partition
table. It does this for all disks, all of which work fine on the
aforementioned two systems.

I have modified /etc/conf.modules appropriately (or, should I say, as per
RH's errata FAQ).

My next step will be to recompile the kernel (which I'd be doing anyway)
and toss ppa + parport support directly in.. to what end, I dunno.

All of the docs I've checked on ZIP (Howto's, etc) have not yielded any
help. I'd appreciate any keen words of wisdom here, as I know the drive
works fine with my other unix boxen.

I tend to disagree. What you expect from a server is heaps of IO
(especially disk) bandwidth. Also you want expandability, since
you will eventually run out of disk space. With Ultra ATA you
are pretty much out of luck there, you can't add disks without
huge performance drop.

I think Ultra ATA is fine for single disk, single user
workstation type setups. For servers I wouldn't consider it.

I'd say an on-board Ultra SCSI-II controller is a good option.
I'm not too fond of Adaptec controllers myself, due to heaps of
bad experience. I haven't used the board Steve is planning for,
but maybe he can find a good mobo with Symbios controller? Or
even dual controllers, for software striping or mirroring etc.
Also, decent (fast and large enough) tape drives are usually
SCSI.

Steve, you didn't mention any RAM, don't forget to budget for
that, it makes up for a considerable chunk of the overall system
cost.

Your choice of monitor indicates that you plan to sit in front
of a lot, too. You may want to choose a graphics adapter that
gives good X11 performance and picture quality. My all time
favourites are the Matrox cards, like Mil-II, G200, G400.

Just my personal view,
take it for what it's worth.

Cheers
Steffen.

Hmm souns like wrong byte order to me but you said you already
tried that. Have you tried using cdrdao ? I find it much
easier to copy audio CDs with cdrdao. You can find the link
to it's homepage on http://freshmeat.net if you enter cdrdao
in the search field. To use cdrdao your CD-R drive must
support DAO (disc at once) mode. Most modern drives do.
I have personally used Mitsumi CR2600 and Waitec WT2444EI
to copy audio CDs with cdrecord and experienced no problems
at all.

I found that Slackware 7.0 come with Xwindows 3.3.5 .

This is a bad news to me . Are there any easy way that I can update it to X
windows 4.0 ?

I have checked Xwindows site , there are source download and binary
download. Which one will be easier to me ?

PS : I ma not Linux expert , so It may be difficult for me and Slackware is
not so user friendly.

The reason for choose Slackware was to training up myself to know better

Debian is a good start. The base system is pretty small
(like 20-30 M maybe? Quite different from Red Hat's
two HUNDRED meg minimum installation) and many
things can be missed from it.

You do need to install it first, then "undress" it down
to 12MB before it will fit on your (must be pretty
rare) 12 MB harddisk. Transferring a linux partition
is not hard. I do hope you don't need a swap partition
on that 12MB drive :-)

I obtain a stable picture with a very good resolution with one of the

  Modeline "p" 135 1280 1400 1440 1800 1180 1185 1188 1209 -hsync -vsync
  Modeline "q" 135 1280 1400 1440 1800 1180 1185 1188 1190 -hsync -vsync
  Modeline "r" 135 1280 1400 1440 1800 1180 1185 1188 1191 -hsync -vsync

  Modeline "u" 135 1280 1400 1440 1800 1180 1185 1188 1194 -hsync -vsync

The problem is, that after a while the picture starts scrolling up
and that the correct mode is an other one every day.
My interpretation of this is, that

(a) the vertical sync signal isnt understood by the monitor and
(b) the vertical frequency of the monitor depends on temperature.

My temporary fix is the plurality of modes as shown above, such that
I can control the picture by switching modes: ctrl/alt/keypad-
accellerates picture upward and ctrl/alt/keypad+ accellerates picture
downward.
The annoying thing is, that it happens quite often, that the monitor
lies between the modes and therefore the picture cannot be prevented
from scrolling.
Another strange thing is, that when the monitor is very warm,
I see the picture jumping sometimes. Thus the vertical sync _does_
come through somehow.

Any hints?

Max

There are no dumb questions, only bad answers :)

If you're running the stock kernel that came with your distro, it is most
likely enabled. If you have customized it, you may need to recompile the
kernel. This is not as complex a task as it may sound, but make sure you
read the kernel-HOWTO (should be in /usr/doc somewhere) for more info on
this, as it is a bit too complex to describe in a few words here. You
should enable the CMD640 bugfix option under block/IDE devices in the
configuration. You also need to have the correct tools installed to make
the compile. (Kernel, gcc, kernel source and headers, libraries etc).

Find out what chip is on the card. "cat /proc/pci" should give you a hint.
Compile support for the relevant chipset into the kernel.

My new PCI128 has an ES1371, and works flawlessly.

For info on how to do this, read the kernel-HOWTO.

Hi Stu,
Had something similar happen to me caused by accepting the default
bootup instead of using expert mode. I was lucky that I have Norton's 2000 and
Partition Mgic 5 installed. The only thing that was visible on C:\ after doing
fdisk /mbr and using win98 bootdisk was Rescue which fixed the partition table
and all was well again. Screwed up partition table again this time on purpose
and used Boot Magic rescue floppy and that did the repairs also. Hope you have
one or the other of those utilities else you might be in a little bit of bother,

With some handwork you can cut down a SuSE or RedHat installation to 40 MB.
The best solution[tm] probably would be a "Linux from scratch".
