Huh?
My previous motherboard had onboard everything, and I replaced all of
it with expansion cards. There were no problems, under any of the
various operating systems I had installed.

Well... when I was shopping for my motherboard, the bare-bones
versions ran about $220. Mine, which had onboard SCSI and ethernet,
was $300. The cost of a comparable SCSI card (an AHA-2940UW) was,
IIRC, at least $150. The cost of a comparable ethernet card was at
least $70. That's nearly $450 for the whole set if I'd bought it
piecemeal, and I'd come out two PCI slots short of where I am now.
The other factor to consider is that it's extremely difficult to find
high-end motherboards with nothing integrated.

As far as video goes, most of it's supported. Stick with a name brand
as you can - ATI or S3 are the two big ones, I think. Crystal Semi
and ESS chips seem to have pretty good support under Linux, although
I've never used either there. Anything by 3Com will be supported, and
I've had good luck with Intel NICs. Adaptec and "Intel" (the actual
maker of Intel SCSI chips varies) SCSI controllers have pretty good
support, except, apparently, for RAID.
I know nothing about UDMA/66 or whatever it is, because all drives
should operate using the One True Interface, SCSI.

This will be really slow, so you might want to stick to the command
line. (Which is the part of Linux you should learn first, as it's the
most powerful and basic.)

Are these in a jukebox, or separate drives?
If they all have the same SCSI ID but different LUNs, you might need
to recompile the kernel and enable the "probe all SCSI LUNs" option,
or only one of them will be recognized.

I tend to agree with you that the drives are not at fault, but WD does have a
tool, that can run in non destructive mode, that you can use to test each
drive. Depends how much time you have, and how desperate you are.

I'm shooting at the power or lack thereof. Get a UPS NOW!! That will at
least prevent future power problems from affecting you. Since you have a T1,
I'm assuming you can afford to purchase a UPS, I think you can get them for
less than $100 now.
As to what part(s) the lack of power may have damaged, it will be a process of
elimination to figure it out. I had a power supply go whacy because of power
problems, it would cause my workstation to reboot at intermittent
intervals. That was extremely annoying. ;-) Coincidently a Cyrix system.
You've seen data corruption on both / and the raid. What level of raid? I'm
assuming one. You'll have to weigh the time vs. money factors but I think I'd
start with a new motherboard and perform the non destructive disk tests. If
you still see problems then examine disk cables, power supply. You might want
to replace the power supply along with the motherboard. If the power supply
is in fact bad, it might damage the new motherboard.
You could also examine the bug reports (if they exist) for the motherboard and
bios, you might find something, probably not though.
Summary
o - UPS
o - disk diag tests
o - new power supply & new mother board

It must be Bob's Generic ISA VGA. ;)

Hi!
I need to set up a mail /web server at where I'm working, and after
thinking about it for a while, I thought it better to have a fault
tolerant set up. I sort of managed to determine what bits & pieces I'd
required... but putting it together is entirely another matter!!
I'd appreciate any help, pointers, advice, resources anyone could point
me towards.
The basic stuff are:
2 linux boxes, built-in dual channel SCSI RAID
1 load balancer
1 external RAID
RH Linux 6.2
(Mix well....ugghh)
What i need to do is to have the 2 Linux boxes to be identical, these 2
boxes access 1 set of data on the external raid. ie, there should be
only 1 set of mail app, mailboxes etc.
So these 2 boxes need to have their own OS? Can they share data?
A load balancer will determine which box gets the job etc. for a fault
tolerant setup.
How can I put everything together? Are there any extra special bits that
I require?
Is there a better way of doing this? ie, sharing data on 1 RAID
subsystem is a no-no?
Thanks in advance for your help!!
Bert

Date: Fri, 07 Jul 2000 23:01:12 GMT
I just installed 7.1 with a Promise Ultra66 and it works great. I
bought a SB Live! Value (2nd Version) and put it in the slot. I get a
kernel panic that says:
Kmod: Failed to exec /sbin/modprobe -s -k blobk-major-33, errno = 2
VFS: Cannot open root device 21:05
Kernel Panic: VFS: Unable to mount root fs on 21:05
When I take the SB out, it boots fine. I thought maybe that the card
was blocking the Promise card, but the IRQ for the promise is 9 and the
SB is 11. I am just lost. Here is what I have on my system:
PCI IRQ (from bootup) IRQ (from Linux)
Viper V550 11 not listed
Adaptec 2940AU 10 10
Promise Ultra66 9 9
NE2000 ethernet card 9 not listed
SB Live! Value (just added) 11 ?
ISA
Intel Ethernet express 5 ?
I am lost! I want to use the Promise Ultra66, and I would like to use
the SB Live! Value. Can anyone help me?

The warranty and liability expired as you read the message.
If the above breaks your system, it's yours and you keep both pieces.
Practice safe computing. Backup the file before you change it.
Do a, man every_command_here, before doing anything or running a script.

I also got the same error message when I upgrade my graphics card. However,
the problem can be easily solved. Reboot the computer with the installation
disk. When asked for installation method, just choose "Upgrade" (Using this
method will not destroy any data already in the partition). The purpose of
this is to force Mandrake to detect the cards and reinstall the bootloader.
Reboot the machine and you will get your Mandrake 7.1 running with your new
sound card.
Hope this helps!

Kudzu recognized & configured my modem on first boot, but now I see
no reason to leave it turned on.
What's the "proper" way to disable an rc script? I usually rename
the file from "S99xxx" to "s99xxx", but I don't know if there's
a better way.
Also, am I the only one who thinks that "kudzu" is a stupid name
for a piece of system software? I prefer names that *mean* something,
rather than having to read the source just to figure out WTF this
does.
