Hi,
I recently received 2 (pretty old) NIC's and would like to know
whether there are still drivers and/or documentation available.
The cards are full-length ISA-Card equiped with DIX- and BNC-
Connector. They are labeled:
3Com Corp, Mt View, CA.
Assy 2012-01 Rev Y SN
Does anybody know, whether this card is compatible with any NIC-
driver from the kernel-configuration menu ?
Thanks

This is from the Linksys knowledge base.
http://www.linksys.com/support/kb.asp?kbid=116
I've included the text since you're having trouble accessing their site
Good luck - Dennis
Article # : 116 How to install the Linksys EtherFast 10/100 LAN Card
under Linux
Supported Operating Systems:
Linux kernel version 2.2.x
First mount the second floppy diskette that came with the network
adapter.
Here is how it should be done:
Log in as root, admin, or superuser and type this at a terminal prompt:
mount -t msdos /dev/fd0 /mnt/floppy
This will mount the floppy diskette so that you can access it?s files
and
directories. Make sure the diskette is not write protected!
Change directories to the "Linux" directory on the diskette?
cd linux
You will need to copy the "tulip.c" file to the correct directory on
the hardrive.
cp tulip.c /usr/src/linux/net/inet
This will copy the tulip.c file to the directory inet, if you do not
have this directory you can make it by doing this.
mkdir inet
You should now have a directory named inet located in the net directory.
Compile the tulip.c file with the compile command:
gcc -DMODULE -D__KERNEL__ -I/usr/src/linux/net/inet -Wall
-Wstrict-prototypes -O6 -c tulip.c `[ -f
/usr/include/linux/modversions.h ] &&
echo -DMODVERSIONS`
PAY ATTENTION TO EVERY LETTER AND CAPATILIZATION!!!
You should now have a file called tulip.o in the same inet directory,
you must
copy the tulip.o file to the proper directory within Linux so it can be
loaded,
and then activated.
cp tulip.o /lib/modules/kernel_version/net
You should now have the tulip.o file located in
/lib/modules/kernel_version/net
(kernel_version is the current version of the kernel i.e.: 2.2.5-15)
Issue the command to activate the modules within the net directory:
depmod -a
Then type the following command to probe the tulip.o.
modprobe tulip.o
Now you should be able to run netconf to setup the eth0 interface with
the local
host name, ip address, subnet mask, and module type.
Host: linuxbox
IP Address: 192.168.1.1
Subnetmask: 255.255.255.0
Module type: tulip
Quit and accept and activate the changes
Type the following command at the command prompt:
ifconfig
You should see eth0 as one of the interfaces, this means the card is
installed
under Linux.

(with
kernel upgraded to 2.2.13 and ESS sound support compiled
in) and a Win
98 installation dual boot. CDs and sounds (WAVs,
MP3s, etc) play fine
through the speakers under Win98. Under
RH6.0, sound samples play
correctly. However, using the GNOME CD
player, the CD spins, but no
music through the speakers. I
don't think I've tried the headset
jack, though.
Win98 probably uses the CD-Rom's DAO to extract the information
digitally, while GNOME uses the old-fashioned analogue Audio Out
on the back of the CD-Rom (which needs to be connected to the
sound card).

For me (and using xmms) it was "esd" (Gnome's autoloading sound

I have a K6-2 300Mhz with 64MB of RAM, all programs crash after some
time of use, I suspect it was a memory problem,
so I replaced it with one (128 MB) the worked fine with other computer,
but the programs still crashes.
The next try was to put the HD on other computer, them it worked ( I was
able to compile the kernel!).
The computer (the trouble one) has no ISA cards (only PCI) so I suspect
the troubles aren't caused by hardware conflict.
The motherboard is made by pc100 and I suspect it is causing the
troubles, what do you think.
thanks.
Ps.: The temperature isn't the problem.

I know it's not Linux-specific, but I'm not aware of a laptop
newsgroup...
I was wondering if anyone has recommendations for voltage converters
for travel in the EU with a notebook computer. I was looking them
over at Fry's yesterday, and one of them said that it should only be
used for travel appliances (e.g., hair dryers, shavers, etc.) and not
for devices with sensitive electronics, such as televisions or
computers. Does anyone know why this would be the case? I would have
thought that, at least with a laptop (but even with a switching power
supply in a desktop) the AC/DC conversion would take care of any
voltage fluctuations. Can I safely use one with my notebook, and if
so, does anyone have any recommendations as to brand? Would a surge
suppressor in addition to the converter take care of whatever problem
they seem to be concerned with?
Also, do I really need one of those fifty-dollar isolation devices for
interfacing my modem with the phone lines, or can I just use an
adaptor? I plan to be in Holland and the UK.

Sounds like a fair assessment based on the little information you have
provided. Try turning off the L2 cache on your motherboard and see if the
problem goes away.

You need the "oki4linux" driver kit:
http://www.linuxprinting.org/show_printer.cgi?recnum=64672
( I keep a local copy of the driver; the freshmeat URL is dead. )
Note that this driver is a bit awkward to use, although it does work.
I wouldn't recommend anyone actually buying this printer for use with
Linux.

No driver, unless Intel has released something very recently (extremely
unlikely). Your only hope, is an ethernet based modem. None of the PCI
or USBs work with Linux.

Where can I find info about this beast ? Is there a FAQ similar to the sun
machine FAQ or is the Compaq site my only source for manuals and stuff, I see
info about the chipset but not a "users manual"?
What sort of power does this creature have (~ to a spar 20 maybe ?)?
What would be the street value of such a server?
Strictly cosmetic but I also need the front cover for the machine, any idea
where to look?
I haven't had much luck in the comp.os.linux.alpha group and I see no other
"alpha" groups.
Thanks in advance for all replies

What?
Are you unaware of the whole DeCSS thing, or are you reserving your

Had such troubles myself once. The problem was DNS and network
connectivity. On starting sendmail several DNS requests have to
be handled. And if for some reason DNS is not available, you'll
have to wait for the appropriate timeout. And this may give you
time for a well deserved coffee break.

Try http://www.alphalinux.org for starters...
If you're going to use SuSE you'll probably want to subscribe to SuSE's
Alpha list, check the URL above for the address (in the docs section).
>What sort of power does this creature have (~ to a spar 20 maybe ?)?
The 4/200 tells me it is a 200MHz system, probably 21064 or 21066
generation. For integer work it will be similar to a 133MHz - 166MHz
Pentium. For floating point it will be similar to a 300MHz Pentium.
Sorry, can't help you with the SPARC comparisons..
Also, generally the more RAM you give Alphas the faster they are.
>What would be the street value of such a server?
>Strictly cosmetic but I also need the front cover for the machine, any idea

If it uses "True Parity" (which it does IIRC) then the value of the RAM
may actually be more then the system. With say 128MB of RAM I would
guess it to be worth about ~ $800. The workstation version of it is
the AlphaStation 200. You can typically pick these up for $100 - $300.
For the panel, try comp.sys.dec

I don't remember seeing anything in comp.os.linux.alpha, did your post
not get carried by many usenet servers? (probably my provider, it seems
to have crappy usenet) Not as many people read/post to
comp.os.linux.alpha as there are on some of the mailing lists; Debian,
Red Hat, SuSE, etc.
