The cdrecord homepage at
http://www.fokus.gmd.de/research/cc/glone/employees/joerg.schilling/
private/cdrecord.html (put that all on one line)
says that the latest version of cdrecord supports Burn-Proof(tm).
FWIW, I've *never* had a problem with buffer underruns, even when I've
been doing something silly like using Netscape while a CD is burning,
and even though my system's all-IDE and the hard drive maxes out at 13M/sec.
If this Plextor device is SCSI, you should be set. Good luck....

Last month I installed suse 6.4. No Problems occured.
Now I want to compile my kernel. After installing, my system does not
boot anymore.
I think that detection of PDC2062 is anabled.
Normally while booting the next messages appear:
.
.
.
<6>Uniform Multi-Platform E-IDE driver Revision: 6.30
<4>ide: Assuming 40MGz system bus speed for PIO modes; override with
idebos=xx
<4>PIIX4: IDE controller on PCI bus 00 dev 39
<4>PIIX4: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
<4> ide1: IBM-DMA at 0x1008-0x100f, BIOS settings: hdc:DMA, hdd: DMA
without recompling the kernel, the next message appear, but after compiling
the message is lost:
<4>PDC20262: IDE controll er on PCI bus 00 dev 78
<4>PDC20262: not 100% native mode: will probe irqs later
<4> ide2: BM-DMA at .....
etc
because all modules and linux stuf are present at ide2 and ide3, the system
cannot boot.
Why don't I get the PDC20262 message after I compiled the kernel?

Hmm. I've messed with these chips in Thinkpads and Dell GX1s, and a
good starting point is to do this:
modprobe sound dmabuf=1
modprobe cs4232 irq=5 io=0x534 dma=1 dma2=0 mpuio=0x330 mpuirq=9
modprobe opl3 io=0x388
The io= value may not work for you; try 0x530 if that's the case.
Unfortunately, a Pavilion I worked with a while ago had ridiculous
problems with its AD1816 card (this under Lose9x! Supported hardware my
arse.) Apparently, for that particular card in that particular machine,
the normal driver does not work, and the solution was to install
InsecureX 6 several times, cross fingers, and pray. I hope you don't
run into a similar problem.

LILO will only boot from disks with BIOS support. Some mixed IDE/SCSI systems
have BIOS support for both. The diagnostic floppy from the LILO 21.4.4 or
21.5 distributions will tell you what disks have BIOS support.
If you have BIOS support, the disk=/bios= options will likely be needed in
lilo.conf.

Thank very much !
I tried to find this kind of information on www.linhardware.com and
www.linux.com and nobody had installed it, yet (or post something yet).
I guess, I'll buy one of these !

DHCP should have nothing to do with whether a card is up or not. Also,
the ne2000 module can drive multiple cards, so only one module should be
loaded. Those lines in conf.modules look a bit funny to me, as well--try
this:
alias eth0 ne
alias eth1 ne
options ne io=0x240,0x300 irq=5,3
You may not need the irq= parameter; the module can determine the IRQ
if it knows the I/O value. However, eth0 and eth1 may be swapped from
how you want them! If that happens, the best and easiest thing to do
is probably to swap the incoming cables...

Complex graphics or large ps files slow it down, but it's the printer
waiting on gs being CPU bound given the host pc is a 40MB DX4/100. I
believe HP has a 6MB module but I went with a spare toner cart instead.

Date: Fri, 28 Jul 2000 19:45:24 GMT
I'm unable to iron out driver problems in Win 98 to be able to digitally rip
audio CD's. Someone suggested I run Linux tandem with Win 98. I have a
crappy Samsung SCR 3232, would be willing to install a CD-R or CD-RW to make
this work.
Are the Linux CD drivers better at digitally ripping audio CD's to MP3?
I found Caldera Linux 2.2 with documention used for $20.
I also found Linux 6.5 Mandrake used with documentation for $20. Should I
go
with that if I decide to try this?
Which Linux is "better"?

Hi,
I've got a sound problem with Red Hat Linux 6.0 when I try to play sound
(e.g. a MP3-file) with XFree 3.3.6.1. The MP3-file plays just great when I
just sit back and don't touch anything, but when I move the mouse pointer or
open some menu's which causes the screen contents to change, the sound
becomes jerky. (I even had to switch off that moving spectrum analyzer of
X11amp, because that also caused sound distortion). I know my computer is
pretty old (Pentium running at 83 MHz), but I do not have these problems
running Windows 95 (and that OS is noticeably slower than Linux...) I hope
anyone can help me with this problem.

And then I suggest you change the type of the extended partition from

The cmpci driver in 2.4.0 is functionally identical to the one in 2.2.16
(should work in 2.2.14 as well). You probably need to enable experimental
option in make config. If your distribution kernel does not allow it, download
the standard kernel.

Your system is barely enough to decode mp3. You can try a character based
player such as mpg123 to reduce resources, or add more memory to reduce
swapping. You can also try a less resource hungry window manager. Windows 95
is probably using less resources and less swapping.
