I have installed RedHat 6.2...using the KDE workstation option...it's great
and all except for one little thing...
Seems I can configure my modem using the KPPP tool, and I can connect to the
internet and all....
I can also run sndconfig from a console, and get my SoundBlaster AWE64
working....the thing is, is after I configure my soundcard, my modem will
not work anymore...I get the message "The modem is busy"
I have tried to configure the soundcard first, but then I cannot configure
the modem...which by the way is a US Robotics 56K V90 Internal.
My modem is on COM1.....dev/ttyS0
My soundcard is on COM2.....dev/tty/S1
Has anyone else experienced this before, and know a way to make both pieces
of hardware work together in harmony...
TIA!

Edit your /etc/lilo.conf file place this in the linux
section.
append="mem=128m"
save file then rerun lilo. Reboot. Your full memory will
show up and be used. This is a bios/linux related problem.

I had a the same problem with my printer. 550 mhz and 930c printer what I
found to be the problem was the cable wasn't in far enough it takes quite
a bit of force.

I have this card too. To my knowledge Xi drivers are the only ones that
work in Linux...
I lucked out and thru extenuating circumstances got the 3D Accelerated
Pro drivers for $100.00. The CD is about 63 MB.
Maybe you can try the demo drivers? Contact Xi and ask which ones (if
any) of there time limited demo drivers will work.
The Pro drivers are very stable and if your using this card in Linux
you'll be amazed at how much better your graphics display will
be..........
Good luck

I have an Adaptec AHA 2940 U2W. It has been flawless in all my distro's
(Red Hat, SuSE, Mandrake, Corel). The drivers for this card are
included in all the recent releases.

You could try Compaq's web site or perhaps calling their support people.
Another possibility - the model number suggests that this monitor could
actually be a re-badged Taxan MultiVision so perhaps you could find it
on Taxan's web site instead.

Just out of interest, can anyone confirm exactly what this does. It seems to
me it sits between the processor/memory and the PCI bus, but does the
processor ralk to the memory via the 751 (i.e. the 751 has three interfaces)
or is there a separate processor to memory bus which the 751 then bridges
to PCI?
My motherboard also has an AMD-756 which is described as peripheral
controller. Am I right in thinking that this chip provides PCI implementations
of the "standard" PC peripherals (PS/2 IDE Serial Parallel etc) along with
a PCI to ISA bus bridge?

Yes, depending on what software you use to capture with.
My TV/Video capture card (Haupage TV Go) doesn't have any dedicated
connection to the video card - it just sits on the PCI bus so there wouldn't
even need to be a video (display) card present in the machine to capture
from the capture card.
The only complication would be if you wanted to watch what you were
capturing which is a facility some of the gUI based capture programs offer.
You could use the GUI interface remotely by setting the DISPLAY environment
variable to point to another machine, but this probably wouldn't be fast
enough to monitor what was being captured. Of course if you are not
bothered about that you can turn the monitoring off or use a command line
based capture tool and all will be fine.

Another poster mention 'grip'. Grip is a GUI program that ties together a CD
ripping program (cdparanoia or another of your choice) with an MP3 coder
(which you have to installled from your Linux distrubtion or elsewhere)
and reference to an on-line CD database to set the track info informatoion
in the MP3 files that are generated.

There is nothing in your message to give us much of a clue as to
why it is locking up.

The first message looks like it refers to internal kernel tables associated
with manging inodes rather than the disk-based filesystem so it looks as
if this is caused by having a very large number of files open at once,
such the kernel runs out of space to keep track of them all.
As I understand it the deleted inode has zero dtime messages occurs when
a files directory entry had been removed (because some program asked to
delete it) but the rest of the delete hadn't been completed because something
still had the the file open at the time the system crashed.
I recjon therefore you are lookinh for some program that opens a very large
number of files which it fails to close.

This may be a process prioritization issue. I think Windows is more ready to
allow an application more than its fair share of the CPU than Linux, so probably
in Windows the MP3 playing is getting priority whereas in Linux the other things
are taking their share.
If this is the cause of the problem you could try running the mp3 player at higher
or real time priority.
Paging activity is another possibility. Just playing mp3 the level of disk
activity should be low - the transfer rate for mp3 is a couple of hundred
Kbits/sec and even a slow disk will do about 4Mbytes/sec. If the disk
rattles a lot during mp3 playing or if there is immediate disk activity on
moving the mouse then you probably don't have enough physical RAM
for all the things you are running - try running fewer programs.

You could also check the manual for words like HCF-, HSP-, HSF
Another incrediblt useful reference for modems and Linux is
http://www.o2.net/~gromitkc/winmodem.html which includes a long
list of modems saying whether they are winmodems or not and if
they are whether they can be made to work with Linux anyway.
There are also links to the modem howto and other useful stuff.

You could try www.linhardware.com and see if they have any record of this
printer. There is also a dedicated printer database whose URL I forget
but many of the printer entries on linhardware.com will point you to it..

Does is the CPU usage up to 100%? (use top to find out) split between
the MPEG player and X? If so if it is the MPEG player that is taking more
CPU then maybe a more effcient MPEG player may be the answer.

My old SBPCI128 (es1370) had an option whereby you could create a second
dsp device with a special option in the asound.conf. It broke, so I got a
new one. Unfortunately, this one is an ES1371, which doesn't behave
exactly the same way. I can seem to access /dev/dsp1 (the es1370 used
/dev/adsp), but xmms runs through the files very quickly and no sound comes
out of the speakers.
How can I configure my es1371 to take advantage of the second device?

(I think) Linux uses a different native file system, meaning it stores files
on your hard drive differently from the method used by dos and the
Win3.1*/95/98. WinNT also uses another native file system. This may make
Dos unable to work with that hard drive. I dont know how it would make it
unable to boot form disk though.
Manually changing the drive settings is always a tad risky, so unless you
actually read it somewhere official...
You may have already done this, (I couldnt tell by your message), but try
installing Linux into a seperate partition than dos
Try partioning and reformating the drive, set it back to LBA, install DOS,
use ghost to multi-partition the drive, THEN install Linux in a sepearate
partition.
