Third. Fifth disk.
But surely its a udma controller in that case? So do you have support
for it in your kernel? I strongly doubt it!

hde is major 33 (i.e. 0x21??). hdg is major 34 (i.e. 0x22). hdi
is indeed major 56 (i.e. 0x38??).

Except that I would guess that you mean hde.

Apparently the boot loader doesn't think it can boot from the sixth
(ha!) ide controller. I don't blame it. Shouldn't one be using a chain
loader by that time? Bioses can't normally boot such things. But I
would suspect that your kernel simply does not have any support for
that device.

Of course. Add support for it to your kernel.

Date: Sat, 10 Feb 2001 23:17:02 GMT
Ok. I broke down and bought an external modem. I made sure it could be
connected to a serial port before I bought it, unfortunately the cord that
came with the modem was to big for my serial port, so it is on the parrallel
port. The documentation that came with it only tells how to set it up in
windows. I am using Redhat 5.2 and the modem is: Compaq Microcom 510 56k
External Fax Modem. How do I set this up? Linux unleashed makes a brief
reference to the parallel port but it is talking about a printer. I was
messing around and thought it might be as simple as linking the /dev/modem
to /dev/par2. OOPS! I did the command backwards the first time and then
redid it the right way. What I now have is:
modem -> /dev/par2 and par2 -> dev/modem. How do I fix this?
Thanks,
Dave

These instructions are for Redhat 7.0. YMMV!
Install lm_sensors.
rpm -q --whatprovides lm_sensors
lm_sensors-2.5.2-3
The man pages aren't all that informative, but the documentation
(usr/share/doc/lm_sensors-2.5.2) will tell you what you need to do,
after a fashion.
In particular:
Run 'sensors-detect' which will try to detect the sensors on your MB
and tell you what you have to do to which files (i.e. which modules
you need to load and in which files: rc.local and /etc/modules.conf,
as I recall) in order to provide sensing of the various quantities
on your MB. Once you do what it tells you...
You run 'sensors' to determine the current status.
All that it provides at the moment is a single text output per
invocation. You'll have to run it in a loop or provide some other
backend capability to watch the situation develop in real-time.
Be advised, there are reports of problems re: stability, linux and
lm_sensors on the BP6 board. (the KT7 is another Abit board, right?)
I just installed it yesterday, so I haven't any significant
experience to report, as yet, except that the quantities it reports
are in line with the quantities reported in the bios setup page that
reports such things, so it's getting the DN to engineering units
conversion right.

I found that rm will remove a link, so I issued the command:
rm par2
now I dont have that anymore and I think I need it. In /dev I have par1 and
par2 which look like this:
crw-r----- 1 root daemon 6, 0 may 5 1998 par0
crw-r----- 1 root daemon 6, 1 may 5 1998 par1
How do I get par2 back so it looks like it did before I screwed it up?

The cable is most likely an 'old style' serial cable, and it does not
work in the parallel port. There are adaptors that allow you to connect
it to the serial port.

Use the mknod command, and look at Documentation/devices.txt in the
Linux source directory for more info. Specifically, the command here is
mknod /dev/par2 c 99 2
Here c refers to a charecter (unbuffered) device (as opposed to buffered
block devices like disks), 99 is for parallel ports and 2 for the par2.

The modem has a parallel port, it is made so you can use it wiht either a
parallel or serial. Why would a brand new modem have an old style serial
cable? How do I set up an external modem?

It is some posibilities:
1. Use PQMagic-very clever program, may be it will se HDD
2. Use another mashine with Linux installed & try to use cfdisk or fdisk or...
3. Use Installation Disk of Linux: boot from it for installation & delete
partitions by fdisk or DiskDruid. After deleting create new DOS partitions,
press OK button and reboot.

Hi There.
To get it up and working right away, the easiest thing to do would be
going to your local Radio Shack or computer store, and getting the correct
serial cable for your PC - most likely a DB9 female at the computer end, and
then whatever your modem requires.
The argument for using the Parallel port is that the serial port tops out
at 115.2 kbps; the parallel port can go much faster (at a minimum twice the
speek - 230k +) - since at best case, your modem can transmit a 33.6k and
recieve at 53k, the serial port isn't really a bottleneck.
To get the modem working on the serial port, simply link /dev/modem to
/dev/ttyS01 or /dev/ttyS02 or whatever your serial port is (think COM under
windows, and subtract 1 - COM2 = /dev/ttyS01, and so on) - Fire up Minicom,
and type in 'at' and hit enter - should answer back with 'OK' If not,
verify that minicom is setup with the right port (minicom -s, as root)
I'm sure that it's possible to get the modem working on the parallel port
under linux, but it would be much more complicated - the parallel port is
historically used as an output only device; the bi-directional use of the
port is fairly new....
My advice, get the serial cable that you need, and fire it up that way -
near instant gratification.
As Always, MYYV...

Subject: Re: Vid card upgrade cuases loss of Linux
Date: Sun, 11 Feb 2001 04:27:03 GMT
Hi There....
Gonna answer both questions at one shot....
For the modem, most likely your computer already has two serial ports (on
the MoBo) - Com1 & Com2 - if you don't disable COM 2 on the main port or IO
controller, then it will conflict with the modem, and neither will work
right. I'd suggest turning off the port on the mainboard - check out the
BIOS; probably under 'integrated peripherials' - and disable port 2 / com2 /
serial 2 or something to that effect.
Once that's done, link your modem device (/dev/modem) to the serial device
(/dev/ttyS1) - Fire up 'ol Minicom, and you should have a modem - Enter 'at'
and hit enter, should get 'OK' back.
As for the video card, the ATI AiW 128 is supported under current versions
of XFree; I'm not sure when exactly is got included, but as of RedHat 7.0
and Mandrake 7.1 it was there. At startup, if X comes up garbled, hit
"Ctrl-Alt-F1" to switch to a console, login as root, and run Xconfigurator.
Follow the prompts to re-configure your X setup... If you're running an
older version of X, you may need to upgrade to get the card support.
TV turner is supported, through the GATOS project - Website escapes me,
but I can usually find it by going to www.linuxlinks.com, and searching on
GATOS. ATI is not supported by video4linux, so vidcaps aren't working
(that I know of - if there's an ATI vidcap program, I'd love to know!)
Good luck, I have that card in my desktop machine - I've used ATI for 10
years, and always been happy.
YMMV -
