Hi;

I'm trying to setup a EPSON 1270 printer on RedHat 6.2 with not
luck. I used the uniprint ghostscript driver that comes with redhat but
it refuses to print postscript files. When I print from gimp using the
EPSON 800 driver it work fine. According to the printer database the
1270 should work fine. Any suggestions on how to configure the printer
would be greatly appreciated. Thanks....

Hi all,

Something I was just wondering about - what is the most powerful Linux
system currently in existence? I mean as in super computer grade / SMP type
computers that run Linux, highest memory arenas it runs in, clock speed etc.

Just for interest sake...

That's one of 'em...the other is es1370. You need to make sure you use the
correct one for your card. I have a 1370-based AudioPCI in one of my
computers and 1371-based AudioPCIs in two others.

you could have said that. you said

1) small (but at least 1.5GB)
2) fast -- you emphasised fast.

no mention of portable.

how about one of them fujitsu MO drives? i think the new line up does
1.4GB (less than, but close to your requirement). they can connect
via an external scsi cable.

The older Via KX133 chipset is known not to work reliably with the
Thunderbird-core Athlons, thus the need for the (minor revision) KT133.
The Slot A Thunderbirds were intended for large OEMs only as a stopgap
until the Socket A motherboards shipped in quantity; end users weren't
supposed to be able to buy them separately, but everything hits the grey
market these days.

Good choices. Wish they'd hurry up with the G450.

Alas, yup. I'm waiting for someone to get an Asus or Abit Socket A
board in stock... or holding out for a dual processor Mustang-core
Athlon late this year. The "temporary" upgrade would be cheap enough
that its tempting, and it'd boost my http://www.dcypher.net score nicely

I've been looking at printer spec over the last week, looking for photo quality
output.
The Epson 900 looks a good bet; you can get a level3 PostScript module for it,
it does 1440 dpi (IIRR) and can handle thick glossy paper (so the ink stays on
the surface as it dries, rather than sinking in and spreading, like on blotting
paper).

Hi!

Need some advise with a 3c509b ISA network card. It works well
under Win98, but won't work under Linux.

I have the driver compiled inte the kernel, and it is detected
during boot, with same IO and IRQ as under Win98, but still
won't work. Pinging itself works under Linux, but pingin an
outside host doesn't.

ANY help or suggestions wanted! I think it is strange... as it works
just fin under Win98, but not in Linux. 3c509 are supposed to be a
well tested and stable nic for Linux, isn't it?

Answers to newsgroup will be read - but any CC:s to my email are
also apprechiated! tnx!

Got it configured and running fine in less than an hour.

In any case, if you're planning to do regular bacups, it's a good idea to limit
the size of a filesystem to that of the backup medium...

e.g., if you're going to use a tape with a capacity of 2GByte, limit the size of
a partition or filesystem to 2GBytes, so you can fit it on a single tape...

Ofcourse, you'll not want to use CD-Rom for backup, and limit yourself to
650MBytes, willl you? ;-)

You want isapnp. Once you get it set up right, the presence of an
/etc/isapnp.conf file will trigger the boot to configure the devices.

The basic procedure for setting up isapnp is:

pnpdump > /etc/isapnp.conf

Now edit /etc/isapnp.conf in you favorite editor.

Uncomment the section that matches the config you want, and set the values
for IRQ and other resources you want from the lists provided.

Uncomment the "Act Y" line at the end.

Hopefully issuing an "isapnp /etc/isapnp.conf" will now make the modem
visible. If not you probably need to tweak the serial port settings with
"setserial" too. (man setserial)

hth,
Chris

I use cdparanoia to rip... it can sometimes be r e a l l y slow... but that's
prbably because it's correcting a lot of errors (bad CDs, but also a dirt cheap
drive). It even speeds up if I tell the software to run the drive at 2x or 1x
speed, instead of the default 8x speed that the drive is capable of.
Looks like running the drive slower results in fewer read errore, therefore
fewer re-reads hence faster ripping...

Bladeenc to convert .wav to .mp3 format.

I tried Slackware back in 1997... a real pain to install. RedHat 4.2, 5.2, 6.0
were e a s y. Then Mandrake 7.0. Even easier... even if I couldn't get it to
boot straight from the CD.

I've read some bad things about the 7.1 screwing up partitions, disk labels,
other stuff. I would recommend getting 7.0 off a magazine coverdisk. Ask around,
like someone else suggested; if you've got a Debian expert next door, borrow his
CD (and brain) for an evening.

Maybe under Windows. If you look at the tests that I've done, they're
not affected by amount of RAM. The problem is the speed of the CPU
talking to the RAM, not some fuzzy overall machine performance.

> One thought - is SMP still compiled into the

Different stock RedHat 6.2 kernels; same kernel version; one with, one
without.

I've a third machine, a signle P-II/400 128MB RAM ASUS P2B-D that gives
very similar numbers to the SMP machine. Other than CPU/motherboard,
this machine is essentially identical to the problem child.

This should put the SMP nonsense to rest. Next time I'll not mention
that machine. Geez....

Hi,

I have just acquired a pair of 3c509b-Combo cards (but no drivers) so I
thought I'd have a play around with networking two machines. I have read
the the how-to but I haven't managed to get past the first step. When I
look in Win98 it identifies the card correctly but states that it is in
PnP mode. I download the TPOFIX.EXE file from the 3com site but when I
run the program in DOS it just states that the card is not a TP or TPO
card.

Anybody got any clues? I

realise this isn't really a Linux H/W problem but I can't get any further in
Linux without turning PnP off and finding out which interface is being used.

Cheers in advance, Jay

I had the exact same problem, I installed Red Hat in a dual boot and had no
problem getting to Linux but could not boot into Windows. If I typed dos at
LILO it simply hung until I gave the 3 finger salute, and it would not boot
from a DOS floppy. The problem is that the label on the extended Linux
partitiion is probably wrong, run Linux Fdisk like this "fdisk /dev/hda -l >
/tmp/hdaconfig.txt" without the quotes. This will send the contents of the
fdisk report to a text file and you can post it here. My old partition table
looked like this.....

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2495 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 765 6144831 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 766 768 24097+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 769 2495 13872127+ 5 Extended
/dev/hda5 769 1023 2048256 83 Linux
/dev/hda6 1024 1151 1028128+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda7 1152 1168 136521 82 Linux swap

Note the extended partition is labeled as ID 5, this is wrong. My current
partition table looks like this.....

Disk /dev/hda: 255 heads, 63 sectors, 2495 cylinders
Units = cylinders of 16065 * 512 bytes

Device Boot Start End Blocks Id System
/dev/hda1 * 1 765 6144831 b Win95 FAT32
/dev/hda2 766 768 24097+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda3 769 2495 13872127+ 85 Extended
/dev/hda5 769 1023 2048256 83 Linux
/dev/hda6 1024 1151 1028128+ 83 Linux
/dev/hda7 1152 1168 136521 82 Linux swap

and I can now boot into Windows. Fdisk walks you through the process quite
easily, just boot from your EBD (you did make one) and log in as root. This
may also work if you log in to safe mode (at lilo type linux safe), but I have
not tried that method. I hope this helps and good luck.
