Just having /dev/hde* is not good enough - those are probably always
present.
Unless you compiled the promise's driver into the kernel, you'll
probably have
to insmod/modprobe it; not sure what it's called though ('pv1234' or
something
I think; look in /lib/modules/<kernelver>/).

I run SuSE and was fortunate enough to get the Promise controller on my
A7V
to work by simply installing the k_eide kernel :-)

But since I plan to update/recompile my kernel manually (first to
2.2.18, then
maybe to 2.4.1), I hope I can keep it that way...

By the way, do you know if it's safe to enable DMA for drives on the A7V
(I have
2 Maxtor 60gig 7200RPM drives attached (one to the onboard controller
and one
to the onboard Promise controller)?

Subject: text app for serial terminal

Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

I need to find a application that can do simple database access and text
file reading, that can be accessed from a serial terminal from a linux
server. I want to be able to read names and telephone numbers, and
simple to do lists from the server. I would also like to be able to
access and change these databases from windows and macintosh clients on
the network with the linux server. A simple text file could be used for
this on the server, but is there a good app for searching the text files
available for access by a serial terminal. I am not too fond of vi and
similar apps, as they do not have very many features. Also I am not
familiar with emacs or similar apps, as I have never had any use for
them. This is a learning experience for me. I have not found any howto
on this subject and I have read the redhat documentation and not found
anything there either. I use RedHat 7.0 at the moment on a Cyrix 200MMX
serving ipchains with port forwarding, dns, squid caching proxy, www,
ftp, news, appletalk filesharing, samba filesharing for windows, printer
sharing, ppp over serial, serial logon for terminal, and cdrom's online.

I am developing systems and software for cross platform use of an isp in
Pakistan currently, and I need this system for the terminal to provide
some little comfort to my wife who says I spend too much time with my
computers. She needs to put her telephone lists and to do lists on the
computer, and I have not told her that I do not know how to do this yet.
Please help me out of my perdicament, so I can work in peace.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 10:08:08 GMT

Hi,

I'm trying to control a device through the serial port, using
interrupts. The device provides an output signal validating the data
(clock).
I don't know which line of the serial port use to connect this clock
signal and which type of interrupt I must program (transmitter holding
register empty interrupt, received data available interrupt...) to
generate an IRQ4 every time the clock signal goes high.

Could anybody help me, please? Thanks a lot.

I've found the answer:
my disk is UDMA 100, and the board is UDMA 100, but apparently the
current via driver does support UDMA only up to 66. At boot time the
bios configures things for UDMA 100, which means that if I turn DMA on
without specifying -X66 it kills the system (incidentally, this means
you CANNOT "use DMA by default" when recompiling the kernel and must
activate DMA later on). There's also a "minor" detail: in 2.4.0 the
"use DMA by default" thingy is *ignored*. I ran a diff between the
two driver source files and they added it only in 2.4.1. I've now
installed 2.4.1, disabled DMA by default and added hdparm -d1 -X66 in
rc.local and everything runs fine.
The values I get for the disks are approx 10 Mb/sec for the (udma33)
fireball and 15-16 Mb/sec for the (udma66) seagate. It's not as good
as the values some people reported, but at least it's not that slow....

A side question: what should I set idebus to? The kernel "guesses" it
at 33 Mhz, telling to override manually if needed. What value should
I use?

Bye and thanks everybody,
Alberto

I want to install Mandrake on an old Dell Optiplex GL5133. According to the
instructions, I'm supposed to
disable plug n play (PnP) OS support so that the BIOS is forced to
handle PnP. However, there's no option to do this in the BIOS SETUP program
(it's
Phoenix 1.10 if that's any help).

Does this mean I don't have to worry about it, or that I need to disable PnP
manually for each device before installing, or that I need to find a less
ancient machine?
In other words, if I just go ahead and install Linux, will it be able to
detect any of the hardware?

    Thanks in advance,

    Ben

I've had good experiences with the ATI rage 128 family - with DRI under

Urgh. You can't use the parallel port for this cord. It is probably
a 25-pin serial connector, not a 9-pin one. You'll have to get a
25->9 pin converter, if your system does only offer a 9-pin plug.

Subject: Recovering QNX and AIX HDs with Linux
Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 12:26:15 +0100

Hi,

during a storm, a light crashed a few computers here, and two friends
asked me for some help to try to recover data from a QNX and an AIX 3.2
HD.

As for the qnx, I included the qnx4 fs in the kernel, but when I try to
mount the HD the kernel says that the HD is not QNX. I tried with several
QNX floppies also, with the same results. However, the QNX computer of my
friend is really old, I would say QNX0, and I wonder if the qnx4 fs
supported now will not work on old QNX systems.

As for the AIX HD, I have seen that fdisk includes AIX when I type "l",
but I didn't see any AIX fs support in the kernel. In short, there's a way
to put my hands on the data of the AIX HD, using an Alpha/Linux running RH
6.2 ?

Thanks to both. I've now managed to get some control of the partition
type (I used the cfdisk that came with the Turbo CD.) However, I now
find I've created a bigger problem for myself. When Turbolinux
installed I accepted the *recommended* option of writing LILO to the
MBR. Now, of course, even after I've reinstalled DOS, when I reboot I
get LILO. Any guidance how to get back to where I started? I can't
find any how-to's that cover this.

I guess I need to try and re-write the MBR, but I've no idea how to
start, or what to write, or how!!

Thanks,
Mike

Hallo Gruppe!

Bin ich hier OT?
Ich kann mein Modem nicht am 1. seriellen Anschlu (tty0) betreiben,
denn sobald beim Booten die Meldung "UPS Daemon started on tty0",

Was macht eigentlich dieses UPS Daemon? Wei jemand eine

You can remove lilo from the master boot record of first ide hard
drive by either running 'fdisk /mbr' under dos, or
'dd if=/dev/zero of=/dev/hda bs=512 count=1; sync' under Linux
(don't dare make any typos if you use the latter).

If you want to continue to boot Linux, and also have the option
for booting Dos or Windows then using lilo on the MBR is fine
and what you want to do is add an option in /etc/lilo.conf
and then re-run lilo. The option might be an extra couple
lines looking like this:

other=/dev/hda1
       label=Windows

Then when your computer boots, you need to hit the <ctrl> key and <tab>
to get the full menu, otherwise the default boots after a delay.
Options in /etc/lilo.conf control the length of the delay
and which is the default.

It's also possible to put up a splash screen with this menu and make
it look better - Corel Linux, for one, did this. But I don't know
offhand of a good package to recommend for other distros.

Date: Mon, 12 Feb 2001 13:19:35 GMT

I'm having trouble with some of my Linux partitions (created by
PartitionMagic 6.0). They take forever to mount, and I suspect that
is because they're large (one is 15GB, the other 20GB) and PM6 has
set their block size to 1024.

So what I'd like to know is whether there are (free) tools available
that will allow me to a) resize and b) change the block size of ext2
partitions on-the-fly (i.e. without having to backup/restore all the
files on them) (possibly including the root partition).
