Hi, I haven't tried GATOS, don't know if I ever will, since I hardly
use my ATI tuner (I don't have cable, I do have poor reception).
But the GATOS FAQ
http://www.core.binghamton.edu/~insomnia/gatos/gatosfaq.html#q5
says:
When I use GATOS, my mouse cursor gets messed up, why?
This is because the required video memory has not been reserved. You need the
"gatos.conf" file (in /etc usually) to have the correct "buffermem" setting
(600 for NTSC/PAL-M or 864 for PAL). The XF86Config should have the SAME
amount reserved from the base amount of memory on the card. See the INSTALL,
gatos.conf.sample and XF86Config.sample files for more details. Alternatively,
this can all be setup with a GUI using the "gatos-conf" program. Make sure
you restart your X server after you make any changes to the XF86Config file
for them to take effect.

just a little note here:
im running redhat 6.2 on a 486 dx2/66 oc'd to 80, with 16 megs ram, / 32 (i
think, cant remember) megs swap
i have only ever seen the graphical install ONCE, that was on my old fella's
machine, it has 48 megs ram...
...and it sucked any way...too hard to use (i dunno why...it looked sexy tho
=o) )
also, try not telling your BIOS about the hdd, and linux (sometimes, not
always) will pick it up and use it anyway...clever little dick!

Is there anyone out there who has tested the Microstar 694d pro aka
ms-6321 dual fcpga motherboard with linux. I'm thinking of buying one of
these together with two celeron II 600's, aiming for 9x100 MHz. I have
been running quite happily with my abit bp6, 2x400 MHz for a while, but
the board/bios/linux smp implementation is not good, or atleast it is
not working good together, random crashes in X is the result. Does
anyone know of a review together with linux?
Really appreciate an answer!

OK, I emailed a fellow who had the same problem as I yesterday (he
posted about a month ago). He emailed back this morning saying he had
updated the BIOS and that seemingly solved his problems. I'm going to
give that a try.
As for Western Digital's utility to turn off UMDA/66... I didn't know
they had one for Linux. How should I proceed in getting this or
unsetting this default myself?
I'll get you the dmesg and have it posted tomorrow.
I spent a little more time last night tweaking with hdparm. It seems
that if I turn on DMA and then bench it, the settings are lost.
However, with DMA disabled all the settings remain after hdparm -t. I
have a feeling the BIOS upgrade will help this. BTW, I have an Award
BIOS from '96. How much do those things cost to upgrade, it's not
specified on their website? I know with my other mobo, Tyan, I get free
updates for life, but legacy Award now charges.
Thanks all for your help so far, I greatly appreciate it!

seemed to be detected, but my network card, zip drive, etc were all not

A less stupid question: Is there a jumper beneath the battery, labelled
INT/EXT ?
If yes, you should probably set it to EXT(-ernal battery).

Hello, ladies and gentlemen:
I purchased a `Trendware 4-port hub card' intending to use it in
a small home-office LAN setup. This card came with a RTL8139 PCI 10/100
card, which appears to work fine. The Hub card, supposedly equivalent to
a 5-port hub connected to a RTL8139 card, doesn't seem to work when I try
to connect it into the wall socket. Do I need a reversed cable for this?
Or is there some other remedy? Thanks, B.Y.

Hey Folks,
I have enough of this lousy driver discussion: XYZ supported ? How ?
I have really enough of this type of disscussions an tricky support.
I have an idea to force the manufacturer to support Linux Drivers
(Module-binary would be ok).
Every piece hardware is supported in Microsoft Windows.
Microsoft lost the civil act, because they worked against their
customers. Every manufacturer who supports only Microsoft OSes,
is guilty in the same way.
Let's setup a foundation, each frustrated hardware owner
donates a few $$$ into a Foundation. Then it must be possible
to setup civil acts against those manufacturers. Those
must not be successful, the defense of those manufacturers would
be much more expensive than develop and releasing linux driver modules.

Just in case you can't find one and want to try your hand at making one,
here's the pinouts for an Apple serial port:
These are the pinouts for the basic serial port used by all Macs from
the Plus onward (the mini-DIN-8:
http://til.info.apple.com/tilarchive.nsf/artnum/n1699
Some more recent models (those that are "geoport" capable) add a 9th pin
to the connector (in betwwen pins 4 and 5). This carries +5 volts
(350mA max) as well. Since you won't be powering anything off of the
serial port, you can ignore that pin.
Here are some documents about the 8- and 9-pin variation of the Apple
serial ports:
http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n12737
http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n15829
http://til.info.apple.com/techinfo.nsf/artnum/n14703
I hope this helps somewhat. Making cables with mini-DIN connectors is
possible, but can be a pain in the neck. If you can find the
connectors, I recommend using crimp-style pins - they're far easier to
work with than the solder-type.

I've always had good luck with Imation (which used to be known as 3M or
Scotch, BTW.)
Verbatim is a popular brand, but as you've already seen, they don't seem
to hold up over time.
I haven't had any problems with Sony, but I haven't used them very much
either.
Global doesn't make their own tape. It's going to be tape from some
other brand, relabled. I don't know what you're actually going to get.
My experience is with 4mm, 8mm, DC6150, TR-4, floppies and non-data
(audio and video) media. I haven't used the other types you mention,
but I would still trust Imation/3M, simply because of their good
reputation with other kinds of magnetic media.

Subject: Re: Trendware 4-port Hub Card?

I won't ask why you bought a 'hub card' but I believe that the cards provide
nic functionality on one port & then hub functionality on the other 3 ports.
Never used one but that was my understanding from a description.
The second card is probably not needed unless you wanted your box to have two
nics on the same 4 port network....
