I think my board is an M571 as well, i'll have to give redhat another try,
perhaps they have cured the problem since 5.2

Hi all,
I'v just installed a not so old ethernet card, it's a DEC 21040. I have
the support for that card using tulip driver.
At boot time the card is founded with no problems.
Than when the system try to start the network (dhcp client) the kernel
says: SIOCSFFLAGS: resource temporary unaivable
I think is a problem with IRQ, at sturt up the kernel says that the card
will use IRQ 0 (it sounds me strange) that is
always in use by the timer.
Any advice?

Hello all --
I realize this is probably a hot question for debate, but I am wondering
if they feel Pentium or Celeron is a better choice for Linux.
What is it considered? A i386 build? Or is it 586? 686? something
else?
I am considering getting a laptop (cheap) and running Linux... given my
budget many of the machines I'm looking at have (mobile) Celeron
processors... Anyone know if its worth holding out for a real Pentium?
or are AMD's any good? I do a fair amount of compiling/etc and don't
want to have a flaky CPU.
Thanks for any advice...

I found out what caused the problem, more or less. When I uninstalled
Helix GNOME, I replaced the esound-0.2.18 RPM from Helix with the esound
0.2.17 RPM from my RH 6.2 distro. Apparently, esound 0.2.17 didn't get
along with the /tmp/.esd directory left behind by esound 0.2.18, and
that caused sound to not work, period, even for sound playback programs
that had nothing to do with esound per se. (Go figure.) Deleting
/tmp/.esd got my sound back.

Just for the record:
Every distribution of Linux includes the source code of kernel.
You can compile it to reflect the hardware on which you will
run it including all CPU's since i386 and up.
Not knowing for which configuration the distribution will be used
the supplied kernel is mostly i386 compatible which makes it run
on all CPU's with minor eficiency limitations.
If you need to squeeze every drop of performance from your hardware sit
down and recompile.
As simple as that....

i don't know why you'd do that. the real pentium, i.e., classic, was
discontinued long ago.

i hear the AMD has been putting out some very good stuff lately. the
latest from AMD seems to be clobbering intel on price/performance.
however, if you can wait a few months, i think some significant

Subject: Help - Linux & mobo troubles....
Date: Sat, 05 Aug 2000 23:30:02 GMT
I am having troubles getting a computer to see an older cd-rom. The cd-rom
is a Toshiba model #: MX-5302B (I have been unsucessful in locating drivers
or finding any information on this part at all). The mobo is an Atrend
ATC1000. According to the mobo manual (I retrived this from Atrends
archives) I found two pieces of information. The first was that it was
using an Intel 82430FX chipset. Secondly, it gave the bios information as:
Rom PCI/ISA Bios 2A59CA29 (which another website
http://www.ping.be/bios.html matched to the Intel Triton FX chipset). This
is an Awards Bios.
What I am trying to do is to load Linux onto the aforementioned system, but
I have been unable to do so because the system won't register the cd-rom
(currently the only way for me to load Linux is by cd, I have RedHat Linux
ver.6). I have come to the conclusion that the only way to get this system
to recognize the cd-rom (without having to load windows9.x) is to flash the
bios. However, I have never done this and do not want to do this if there
is another way. My questions are:
1) Is there a way to get the bootdisk for Linux to recognize the cd-rom
(preferably without flashing the bios)?
2) If I do end up having to flash the bios.. how do I tell that I have the
proper bios upgrade for my mobo? What do I need to do this? And, how do I
do this?
Thanks for any help in advance.

If you have the same problem I have with 2.4, it put the new modules in
the wrong place, or at least in a different place. Use 'find' to find
them. Then manually copy them to the correct place after you figure out
where that is. Sorry I can't be more helpful, but I'm still working this
little problem out.

If you are using the whole disk for Linux, you don't have to use
EZ-Drive. The BIOS only has to be able to find the /boot directory, not
the whole disk. Make a small (10 Mbyte) partition for /boot at the
beginning of the disk and all will be fine.

Subject: New/Followup ? Re: 20.4GB HD, bios limitation, EZ-drive or any other?
Date: Sat, 05 Aug 2000 23:33:45 GMT
I am preparing to install Mandrake 7.1 on a 1996 Aptiva with the 8.4 GB
BIOS limit. This machine currently has a 10.4 GB Maxtor HD and is
using EZ-BIOS/Drive to get past the 8.4 limit. Running Windows 98 SE.
One of the Mandrake manuals says that the 8.4 limit is not a problem
for Linux as Linux does not use the BIOS for disk access. This thread
would seem to indicate that such is not the case.
I am concerned about the interaction of EZ-BIOS with Linux partitions
and/or boot managers such as lilo or grub. Because of this, I am
already considering buying a new second hard drive (discarding the
original 1.2 GB one) and devoting it soley to Linux. Then, Windoze can
continue to use EZ-BIOS/Drive on the 10.4 GB drive while Linux gets a
clean slate on the new drive.
I thought I had reached a good solution. However, I don't want to buy
that drive to find I face the same 8.4 GB limit on it and the same
questions about Linux's interaction with EZ-BIOS/Drive.
I've been reading around but have not yet found anything clear or
definitive about EZ-BIOS/Drive. And now I am also questioning the
information on the 8.4 BIOS limit.
Also, even if my separate drives plan would work, could I make the
Linux drive the primary IDE drive, complete with boot manager, and have
that boot manager find/boot the Windoze boot partition on the secondary
IDE drive when that drive is formatted with EZ-BIOS/Drive?
Any pointers, experience, or the like would be appreciated. TIA.
