Subject: Problems installing Linux with a Motherboard VIA FA13 - anybody could help?

I'm trying to install Mandrake Linux 7.2 on a computer like:
 - Motherboard VIA FA13
 - Celeron III 700Mh
 - HD Samsung 20 G
 - S3 Trio 3D AGP card
 - Monitor Shamrock Model C502L
 - CDRom AZTECH 10X
 - Network Card Realteck

During the install, when it starts formatting the disk, it hangs up
suddenly.
Changed the HardDisk and the video card to another computer (Pentium III)
and the instalation was successfull.
So I think there is something with the motherboard or the HD controller.
Is there some incompatibility or is it dammaged?
Does anybody have the same motherboard working well?
Thanks!

While this may not be your problem, there is a considerable amount
of folk lore on the web (which I think might be true) that some
revisions of the Abit BP6 motherboard have a manufacturing/design defect
where a weak power supply capacitor is installed on the motherboard.
I suspect that I have that problem (but my symptom is lockups,
not loss of power). I think I have some of these boards, as per
        http://bp6.gamesquad.net/Q6fix.phtml
and http://www.eecg.toronto.edu/~doylep/linux-bp6/

The symptom I get is usually during O/S install, when both CD ROM and
Disk drives are churning durnig data transfer, I get the lockup.
I'm getting ready to have the vendor RMA the boards (since they are under
warranty).

If you are running X, you can see from the following list that your card is
not supported: http://www.xfree86.org/cardlist.html . I had headaches to no
end with my display adapter. I had an NVidia Vanta. Best thing I ever did
was spend $50.00 on a new ATI Xpert card. Now my headaches are gone and I
am Linuxgrooven.

And the older stuff will slow re-arbitration of the bus. Put the
scaner, CDs and the Exabyte on there own controller. Or on their own
bus, if you have a multi channel controller.

Subject: new hard drive woes during linux installation
Reply-To: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 18:47:42 GMT

I posted earlier about a warning that my SCSI controller reports on boot
in regards to a new hard drive. Now I'm experiencing definite problems,
adn I don't know if it's related to the controller warning or not.

Anyway, what I ultimately want to do is have the new drive be the drive
from which I boot. Currently the new drive is /dev/sdb and the old drive
is /dev/sda.

I was trying to install Debian on my new drive, and I first had trouble
installing lilo. When it tried to install lilo, it said it failed because
my installation occurred past the 1024th cylinder. So I went back an
repartitioned my drive, but this time I included a 10 MB /boot partition
to satisfy lilo's needs. (That alone seemed like a work around: my first
paritioning scheme had my / (root) partition on a 512 MB partition; this
is where the kernel image would have gone, and I don't think 512 is too
big).

But when I made the 10 MB /boot partition, I was able to complete the
install. Again I made a 512 MB / (root) partition. The root partition
was on /dev/sdb3 (my third partition; /dev/sdb2 was my swap partition and
/dev/sdb1 was /boot). But when I rebooted, trying to test out the new
system (the one I just installed), fsck reported that /dev/sdb3 was quite
messed up. It wouldn't finish the boot process until I manually ran fsck.

I gave up and rebooted into my old system. I manually ran fsck on
/dev/sdb3 and it had *tons* of errors. Where do all these errors come
from on a freshly partitioned/formatted drive? How do they come up during
the *installation* process?

And does one think this has something to do with the controller's error
message on boot, the one that goes something like this:

Warning! 255 heads, 63 sectors parameter expected. There will be problem
under OS other than DOS.

Could I have a termination problem?

Thanks,
Matt

Why? Raid0 is only marginally less reliable.

Subject: Newbie with Sound Card Problem - Does not last!
Date: Sat, 17 Feb 2001 13:49:19 -0600

OK, I have a ESS 1888 on board sound card @ io=0x220,330,388 dma=1,5 and
irq=5.
I've used SNDCONFIG to setup my modules.conf file. Here is what it looks
like:

alias parport_lowlevel parport_pc
alias usb-controller usb-uhci
alias eth0 ne
options ne io=0x300 irq=10
alias sound-slot-0 sb
options sound dmabuf=1
alias midi opl3
options opl3 io=0x388
options sb io=0x220 irq=5 dma=1 mpu_io=0x330

This one was setup using the ESS 1868 driver from sndconfig. I've tried
it with the sb driver and they look almost identical.

In boot up the everything loads but I gets a IRQ confilct error. Here is
the dmesg

SB audio dirver Copy.........
SB 3.01 detected ok (220)
ESS Chip 1888 detected
YM3812 and OPL3 driver Copy.....
SB: Interrupt test on IRQ 5 Failed - Probable IRQ Confilct.

My BIOS is a Compaq wich sucks. But the only thing I have on 5 or 7 is
the LPT1 which is on 7.

In sndconfig and X the sound starts than cuts out. It will last about a
half a second.

When you exit X you'll see errors that are:

Sound: DMA (output) timed out - IRQ/DRQ config error.
Couldn't load Sound File /****/****.wav as sample gnome/warning <---
This is after using the Gnome control panel to test wav's.

I also found a few web sites about the 1888 sound card, but I'm so new
to Linux that I don't know what to do.
(Ex.
http://www.kernelnotes.org/v23patch/patch-2.3.4/linux_drivers_sound_sb_ess.c.html
)
Any information that could point me in the right direction would me most
appreciated.

BTW: I have 2.2.16-22

Hello-

Could anyone point me to a good source of information on framebuffer support
besides the current HOWTO? I've tried what is outlined there without luck.
I'm trying to get a 800x600 or 1024x768 @16bpp on an ATI Rage mobility and
compaq monitor. I know it works because I had mandrake installed for a
short period of time and it was configured automatically, but I can seem to
set it up myself. none of the modes that I have tried work (the ones in the
HOWTO and the ones listed with vga=ask.)

Any help greatly apprecieated. Thanks!
